Chapter 222 Give Me All of Daphne's Information
"You started preparing the moment you learned that Charles was going to divorce me for Kayla." Daphne had already guessed Aubrey's thoughts. "After all, in your view, if Kayla and I fought to the point of mutual destruction, Charles would choose to abandon both of us."
Aubrey still appeared very puzzled. She seemed to not understand why Daphne was saying these things.
"But when you found out that the car accident didn't go as planned, you ruined Kayla's reputation," Daphne continued. "When Charles didn't care about that, you began to plot something else."
"Wait," Aubrey interrupted her.
Daphne gestured for her to speak.
Aubrey then said, "Are you sure you haven't been watching too many soap operas?"
"I don't have time to joke with you," Daphne's tone grew colder.
"I really don't understand what you're talking about." Aubrey clearly didn't want to stay any longer. "If those things you mentioned really happened, you should report it to the police. They investigate quickly."
Daphne's gaze locked onto her. Aubrey's words and reactions were flawless. If Charles were here, he might think she was falsely accusing someone again.
"For the last time, I don't like Charles," Aubrey stood up, looking very impatient as she said this.
"If you don't like him, why do you still keep that toy he gave you in high school?" Daphne stared at her and said, "And you keep it in your bedroom."
At these words, Aubrey's whole body stiffened.
Daphne continued, "With your background, you should have many valuable collectibles. Why did you treasure something sent to you by an insignificant person for so long?"
"How do you know that?" Aubrey's tone turned much colder, abandoning her previous innocence.
Daphne asked, "Are you willing to talk properly now?"
If she hadn't found out about this, it would have been really difficult to break through Aubrey's psychological defenses. She was truly good at pretending.
"It's just a toy; it doesn't mean anything." Aubrey admitted openly. "Can't I keep something given to me by the first hero of my youth as a memento?"
Despite her words, Aubrey clearly remembered everything that happened that day. She had been waiting for Edwin to pick her up but encountered some bad people. Charles appeared and drove them away. Seeing her cry, he bought her a toy to comfort her.
She knew Charles only saw her as a younger sister, given his good relationship with Edwin. But during the teenage years, girls often developed feelings for boys who were righteous and good-looking.
Unconsciously, her heart was filled with him.
"If it was just to commemorate that event, why did you have your grandfather propose a marriage alliance to Marcus when you became an adult?" Daphne asked again, her tone cold and indifferent.
Aubrey's brow furrowed slightly. She thought to herself, 'Is Daphne crazy? How could she find out about something that happened so long ago?'
"What exactly are you trying to say?" Aubrey asked directly.
"I re-investigated everything and finally found the connection." Daphne found Aubrey quite terrifying. "Every incident was orchestrated by your suitors. Would they have done it without your instructions?"
Of course, Aubrey had ways to clear herself of suspicion, ultimately letting the perpetrators take the fall.
Aubrey's heart quickly calmed down as she said, "I don't understand what you're talking about."
"Do you think that just because I can't catch you with evidence of your crimes, I can't do anything to you?" Daphne asked her.
All matters, including Jesse's bribery, left no trace of Aubrey's involvement. If it weren't for connecting all the dots and investigating some past events, Daphne would never have known it was Aubrey's doing. After all, her first impression of Aubrey was that of a kind-hearted girl.
Aubrey smiled lightly. "I've always abided by the law since I was a child. The criminal label you are trying to pin on me is one I can't wear."
"If I tell Edwin about this, how do you think he will handle it?" Daphne said bluntly.
Even if Daphne knew Aubrey had committed a crime, she couldn't judge her due to a lack of evidence. From the evidence, Aubrey was merely a bystander. But morality and human judgment could still condemn her.
Aubrey and Edwin had a good relationship previously, but as they grew older, they drifted apart, and their relationship was less strong.
"You can go ahead, and I won't stop you. I didn't do anything, so I'm not afraid," Aubrey said, her gaze at Daphne carrying a hint of provocation, "But he has his mess to deal with and won't have the time to bother with your false accusations."
"I hope you can still say that when the time comes," Daphne replied.
Aubrey glanced at her, grabbed her bag, and left.
Daphne called after her, "Wait."
"Ms. Murphy, what else do you want to say?" Aubrey asked impatiently.
"Stop causing trouble for me. Charles and I are already divorced." Daphne made herself clear. "If you don't heed my warning and continue to act recklessly, it won't just be a coffee invitation next time."
If she really took action, Aubrey might not be able to handle it.
Aubrey didn't respond, so she grabbed her bag and left the café, getting into her car. Once inside, her calm demeanor and facade vanished, replaced by a face full of worry and impatience. After locking the doors and closing the windows, she made a phone call.
"Ms. Smith, what are your instructions?" a male voice answered.
"Tell them to stop contacting Jesse. He's pretending to betray Daphne." Aubrey pinched her brow, never expecting things to turn out this way. "Cancel tomorrow's plans as well."
The person on the other end was silent for a moment, seemingly surprised by the turn of events, but still responded, "Understood."
"Have someone investigate Daphne." For the first time, Aubrey's mind was in disarray. She instructed, "Give me all her information as soon as possible."
"Got it."
After hanging up, Aubrey lowered the car window and reclined the seat a bit. She lay there, unable to understand where things had gone wrong. Everything had been going smoothly before.
To avoid Daphne's suspicion, she had built a good image for herself, even leaving Charles with Lydia and Daphne at the mall on purpose. Yet, it still didn't dispel her suspicions.
Even today, when Daphne talked to her about those matters, she thought she was just trying to trick her. It wasn't until Daphne mentioned the past that she realized it.
However, even when exposed, she didn't reveal herself. She didn't know if Daphne had a recording device on her. If she did, it would be like exposing herself.
After leaving the café, Daphne didn't return to the company immediately but called Daisy to inform her of the situation. Because of previous events, Daisy had always wanted to thank Aubrey but never found the opportunity.
Of course, Daphne didn't tell Daisy everything, only mentioning Kayla's car accident and Jesse being bribed.
