Chapter 283 You're Too Cunning
"We met at a bar in Ivrea City," Daphne said, not holding back. "My mom had just passed away, and I was feeling down. I went to Ivrea City to clear my head. That's where I met him."
Benjamin's eyes showed a flicker of pain. "And then?"
"I had a few drinks and started talking to him," Daphne recalled. "He was smart, we shared a lot of views, and he was good-looking. When he proposed, I said yes."
Back then, Charles seemed perfect.
He was handsome, fit, educated, and had strong values. Even after they got married, he was patient and gentle.
Even though he traveled a lot for work, he always kept his promises.
With someone like that, she fell in love without realizing it.
But then Kayla's call shattered everything. she realized that no matter how compatible they seemed, if they didn't share the same views on relationships, it wouldn't work.
"A quick marriage?" Benjamin asked.
Daphne nodded. "Pretty much."
"How was he after marriage?" Benjamin asked, even though he didn't really want to know. He figured he could learn something from it.
If he ever got the chance to be with her, he'd take good care of her.
"Except for the last six months, it was pretty good," Daphne said calmly, though there was a hint of regret.
Benjamin said lazily, "Next time you want to get married, come to me first. I don't think I look too bad."
Daphne was taken aback. She looked at Benjamin closely.
He had a laid-back vibe, thick eyebrows, deep-set features, and a face like a sculpture.
He did look pretty good.
She vaguely remembered being impressed by his looks, but all she could think of now were his serious and stern training sessions.
"Do you want to get married?" Daphne assumed he was feeling family pressure.
Benjamin said, "I do."
He wanted to marry her.
But he didn't say that part out loud.
"Then I'll organize a masquerade ball at this year's annual party," Daphne said, thinking he just wanted to find a partner. "I'll invite all the single folks from HorizonTech Group. How about that?"
"Sure," Benjamin agreed after a moment.
Daphne thought it was a good idea, too.
Jesse and Benjamin were both single, so maybe they'd find someone at the event.
After their conversation, they continued eating.
Just as Benjamin was about to take a bite, his phone vibrated.
He glanced at it and, to avoid the caller from blowing up his phone, he answered, "Did you get beaten up?"
"Damn it!" Patrick's angry voice came through. "Benjamin, you're too cunning."
"Speak properly," Benjamin said nonchalantly.
"I will get my revenge," Patrick declared. "After you get married, I'll have someone put a virus on your phone so that every time you're with your wife, your phone will automatically say, 'I miss you.'"
Benjamin was silent.
"I'll also use a voice changer to call you at midnight and tell you I'm pregnant!" Patrick schemed. "I'll ruin your marriage and make sure your wife scolds you every day."
"Didn't you learn your lesson this time?" Benjamin said casually, but his tone carried weight.
Patrick shivered but pressed on. "Stop trying to scare me. Who removed the virus from your phone, and what's the deal with the trouble I'm in now?"
"I'll get back to you on that," Benjamin replied, not giving anything away.
"You're so petty," Patrick retorted. "Do you believe that next time I see that woman, I'll tell her you—"
Benjamin hung up and set his phone to silent mode.
Daphne wasn't planning on dating right now. If Patrick revealed that Benjamin liked her, she might start avoiding him.
Daphne saw him hang up and assumed he was done talking, not thinking much of it.
Benjamin was relieved he hadn't put the call on speaker; otherwise, Daphne might have gotten suspicious.
After dinner, Daphne went back to her place.
Benjamin sat on the couch, racking his brain for ways to win Daphne over. If things continued like this, he might never achieve his goal. Daphne was too oblivious to relationships.
Daphne didn't think about these things at all. After returning home, she went to rest. She wanted to ask Brian about Charles's situation but remembered she had already asked Richard to do it, so she didn't call Brian.
The next day, Daphne received a call from Kayla.
Kayla invited her out, and they met at a restaurant.
Kayla didn't know what Daphne liked to eat, so she ordered the restaurant's signature dishes. After ordering, she started the conversation. "I haven't properly thanked you all this time."
"You don't need to say that." Daphne's emotions were much calmer than before. She used to joke around occasionally, but now she couldn't muster much interest in many things. Or maybe these things didn't stir much emotion in her anymore.
Kayla called her, "Daphne."
Daphne asked, "What?"
"I'm sorry," Kayla said sincerely. I apologize for all the wrong things I did in the past."
She owed Daphne a lot. Even though she had no choice back then, what she did still hurt Daphne. However, Daphne chose to repay evil with kindness and protected her safety on Butterfly Island.
"It's all in the past," Daphne said, knowing that Michael had forced her, and her emotions had faded.
Kayla bit her lip, her expression complicated, and finally asked, "Did something happen to Charles?"
"No." Daphne didn't tell her the truth.
Kayla wanted to ask more but was afraid Daphne would misunderstand, so she just had the meal with her and didn't ask anything else.
After dinner, Kayla left Gedser. Daphne didn't see her off. She didn't ask about Kayla's plans, whether she would continue modeling or do something else. To her, Kayla was just a passerby.
After the meal, she returned to HorizonTech Group. There wasn't much for her to handle, so after reviewing the day's schedule, she called Jesse into her office.
Benjamin had been at the company for almost a month, and she needed to check on his progress and guide him into his area of expertise as soon as possible.
Jesse appeared in the office, his clear face serious. "You called for me?"
