Chapter 359 So She Was Using Me?

"Can I ask you something?" Summer hesitated.

Daphne, looking effortlessly stunning, replied, "Go ahead."

"Is it true you don't get along with Aubrey from the Smith Group?" Summer asked, clearly nervous.

Daphne paused. Aubrey?

She and Aubrey were only seen together once before, and Summer was there too. But Aubrey was super friendly to her that time, Summer should know about it.

"I need to tell you something about her," Summer said, biting her lip. "Can we talk alone?"

Daphne studied Summer's face before agreeing.

After asking Charles to go inside and order, Daphne and Summer moved to a different spot in the café.

"What do you want to talk about?" Daphne asked.

Summer, visibly tense, said, "I have something to give you."

"What is it?" Daphne asked.

Summer, feeling a mix of emotions, stood up, walked over with her bag, and slowly unclasped it.

Daphne watched closely.

"This is a bit special," Summer said nervously. "Can you stay calm when you see it?"

"You need to stay calm," Daphne replied.

Summer, even more nervous, quickly pulled out a sharp fruit knife and handed it to Daphne.

Daphne reflexively grabbed her wrist, applying some force.

Summer's composure shattered.

"I..." Summer quickly let go of the knife. "I wasn't..."

Summer thought, 'Daphne must have misunderstood.'

Daphne released Summer's hand, her gaze on the knife.

"I'm not trying to kill you, I swear!" Summer's face turned pale. "I just wanted to give you the knife, that's all!"

"Really?" Daphne's voice was calm, which scared Summer even more.

Summer didn't know why she feared Daphne, but she truly had no harmful intentions: "Yes."

"You could have just handed me the knife from your seat," Daphne said indifferently. "Why walk over?"

"I was afraid of being misunderstood," Summer explained. "If someone saw me pulling a knife out of my bag, they'd think I was up to no good and might rush over before I could explain."

To avoid that, she had walked over with her bag, carefully choosing an angle to block the view.

"You could have just given me the bag and told me what was inside," Daphne suggested.

"I was worried you'd think I was threatening you if you saw the knife in the bag," Summer said, panicking. "What if you thought the bag was a decoy and suspected I was going to kill you while you looked inside?"

Summer's thought process was truly baffling.

Seeing no reaction from Daphne, Summer anxiously continued, "I swear I'm telling the truth. Please believe me, okay?"

"Okay," Daphne responded calmly.

Summer paused, wide-eyed. "You believe me?"

"Sit down and talk," Daphne said, genuinely believing her.

From the moment Daphne grabbed her hand, she knew Summer was just trying to show her the knife, not kill her. If someone intended to kill, there would be a forward thrust. The arm she grabbed only had a normal amount of force.

The reason she didn't say anything immediately was that she wanted to see what Summer would say.

"Thank you!" Summer felt a huge sense of relief. "You're a good person."

Daphne put the knife back into Summer's bag to avoid any misunderstandings from others in the café. "So, what's going on?"

"Aubrey asked me to do this," Summer admitted. "She said if I killed you, she'd give me the life I wanted and ensure I wouldn't be punished."

"You believed her?" Daphne asked.

"Half-believed," Summer said. "We didn't put anything in writing, so who knows if she'd keep her word."

Daphne didn't know what to say. "Is that why you didn't kill me?"

"Of course not!" Summer quickly clarified. "That's just a small part of it. I didn't kill you because I believe the life I want shouldn't be built on your death. Even if I got it, I wouldn't feel at ease."

Summer had thought it through. Even if Aubrey would keep her promise, she couldn't do it. Killing was a crime. Her previous arrogance and rudeness only made people dislike her, but committing a crime was a serious wrongdoing, something she couldn't do.

"And also..." Summer knew this might upset Daphne, but she wanted to be honest. "Alexander and Lydia have been very good to us. If something happened to you, they'd be very sad."

"How did she contact you?" Daphne asked.

"She called me," Summer revealed. "But don't you have a good relationship with her? How did it come to this?"

"I have no relationship with her," Daphne said, revealing the truth. "Besides, none of the promises she made to you are possible. She's no longer in favor with the Smith family."

Since Daphne's last visit to Luke, he had explained everything. Although Blake was in business and not the military, he couldn't tolerate what Aubrey had done, let alone her brother Edwin.

"Doesn't the Smith family have that kind of background?" Summer was curious.

"Blake is in business, Stephen is in the military," Daphne explained. "Stephen's family is very just. They wouldn't bend the rules for family, let alone do what Aubrey said."

"So she was using me?" Summer was shocked.

However, at the same time, she felt fortunate that she hadn't gone through with it. Otherwise, her life would have been ruined.

Daphne was a bit surprised. She thought, 'Since when does Summer trust Aubrey's words so much?'
