Chapter 586 Expressing Intentions
After more than an hour, Jesse finally brought Elara over to his place.
Coming back here, Elara felt a whirlwind of emotions she couldn't quite pin down. She really wanted to make a home with Jesse.
"Have seat," Jesse said, handing her a drink.
Elara plopped down on the sofa, not wanting to beat around the bush. "Just say what you want to say."
"Don't you always want to know why I turned you down?" Jesse gathered all his courage to get this out. For a moment, he was actually a bit scared.
Elara nodded slightly, but inside, her heart was pounding.
"The main reason is my family," Jesse started to explain.
For over an hour, Jesse spilled all his worries and concerns to Elara. He had no clue what Elara would decide after hearing this, but he knew he had to tell her. He couldn't stand by and watch her live a reckless life.
"That's what's been on my mind," Jesse finished, feeling a bit awkward, "If you still want to be with me, I'll wait for you to divorce Willie. If not, I won't push you, but I hope you live well and don't go off the rails."
Elara looked at him. "Are you stupid?"
"What?" Jesse was taken aback.
"I don't care about any of that, and neither will my parents," Elara said bluntly, with a touch of pride. "As long as you don't make me do farm work every day, I don't care about your family background."
Elara didn't care about family background, but farm work was a no-go for her.
"I won't make you work," Jesse replied simply. "Your life will only get better than it was before."
"Then why were you so worried?" Elara felt hurt for being rejected before. "And about the gossip you care about, do you have some misunderstanding about my friends?"
"What?" Jesse was confused the whole time.
"Your situation would be an inspirational story, rising from nothing to become the president of a listed company," Elara admired Jesse's calm and determined spirit. "In any circle, that's something to be respected."
"But," Jesse still had doubts.
"No buts," Elara started to scold him. "If anything, it's my family that's not on your level."
Jesse looked puzzled and confused.
"HorizonTech Group's market value is many times ours," Elara explained directly. "The shares you hold in HorizonTech Group earn more in dividends each year than our entire company. Why do you feel self-conscious?"
She had previously thought Jesse couldn't have been stubborn about such things. But it turned out Jesse was just plain dumb.
Jesse didn't expect Elara to be so unconcerned, which made his nervous heart still a bit uneasy. "You really don't care?"
"I do care," Elara teased him.
Jesse's heart tightened.
Elara continued, "Honestly, I'm more compatible with Willie. Our companies' profits are similar. If I were with you, I would feel too self-conscious. If word got out, people would definitely say I'm with you for the money."
"No, they wouldn't," Jesse insisted, his tone icy.
"Of course they would," Elara shot back, giving examples. "Do you not realize the clout HorizonTech Group has in the business world?"
"I know," Jesse admitted. "But HorizonTech Group belongs to Ms. Murphy. I'm just an employee."
"Yeah, an employee," Elara said, dripping with sarcasm. "An employee whose annual dividends from shares are more than my dad makes as a boss. Maybe I should suggest he become an employee instead of running a company next time I see him."
Jesse realized she was mocking him. "Elara..."
"Still feeling self-conscious?" Elara stared him down.
Jesse pressed his lips together, staying silent. He still felt a bit self-conscious. In his mind, Elara was just too good.
"Don't just sit there silently," Elara said, feeling he needed a lesson. "From now on, when I ask you a question, you gotta answer within three seconds."
"Do you really not care at all?" Jesse asked again.
Elara answered him straight, "I really don't care at all."
"Do you not care about my parents either?" Jesse asked.
"Of course," Elara said simply. "If those situations come up again, just find them jobs. If HorizonTech Group doesn't have suitable positions, then the Gonzalez Group will. There are plenty of roles they can handle."
Jesse's hands moved slightly.
Elara reached out and held his hand, seriously telling him, "I hope you don't feel too burdened. Love is between the two of us. You don't need to worry about anything else."
"Do you understand?" Elara pinched his soft skin and scolded him.
"Yeah," Jesse responded obediently.
Elara's tense heart relaxed a bit, and she asked, "So, you admit you like me?"
"Yeah," Jesse nodded, his cheeks and ears tinged with a bit of unease and redness.
Every time she saw him like this, Elara felt an urge to tease him.
"When will you marry me?" Elara asked another question, "What kind of wedding do you plan to have?"
Jesse was about to say anytime, but he suddenly thought of her situation with Willie. His cool demeanor turned serious.
Elara noticed and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Am I ruining your marriage?" Jesse asked. In that moment, he felt a deep sense of shame. He despised people who ruined others' marriages, but now it seemed he was doing just that.
"Sorry, I can't promise to marry you right now," Jesse distanced himself from Elara. "I'll quietly like you, but until you divorce Willie, I can't have too much contact or flirtation with you, nor can I confess to you again."
"Are you stupid?" Elara flicked Jesse's forehead.
Jesse covered his head, his cool eyes filled with confusion. "What?"
"Do you think I'm an impulsive person?" Elara found Jesse's naivety endearing and pinched his cheek again. "Besides, even if I am, would I let the person I like have a reputation for ruining someone else's marriage?"
"What do you mean?" Jesse was getting more confused.
