Chapter 453 I Have My Reasons

Benjamin's hand froze mid-air, phone in hand.

His brain flashed back to the day Gavin swung by. Gavin had gone to see Daphne that night; was he doubting what Benjamin had told him? Nah, Benjamin quickly shook off that thought.

If that were the case, Daphne would've hit him up by now.

"Mr. Reynolds, should we dig deeper into this?"

"Nah, don't sweat it."

Benjamin ended the call.

These guys were his crew, top-tier in snooping, counter-surveillance, fighting, shooting, you name it.

Benjamin fiddled with his phone, thought for a sec, then dialed Gavin to set up a meet.

Gavin didn't suspect a thing, thinking Benjamin just needed help popping the question to Daphne.

They met at a restaurant, kicked things off with some casual chit-chat.

Once the food hit the table, Gavin, all curious, asked, "So, what's up?"

"You didn't buy what I told you the other night, did you?" Benjamin said, taking his time.

"What?"

Gavin was totally lost, no clue what Benjamin was on about.

"Do you still think I'm cheating on Daphne?" Benjamin, looking sharp in his suit, asked.

"Why would I think that?" Gavin was genuinely puzzled. "You said that person was the ring designer, right? You cleared it up; why would I still doubt you?"

Benjamin's dark eyes locked onto his.

Gavin was even more confused. 'What is going on?'"If you didn't doubt me, why'd you have someone tail me?" Benjamin cut to the chase.

Gavin was about to deny it but remembered the orders he gave a few days back. "Keep tabs on Benjamin and stop him from seeing Daphne.""Uh..." Gavin fumbled for words. "Would you believe me if I said there was a reason?"

"I do."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"I swear I didn't doubt you, and I believe what you told me." Gavin didn't expect to get caught. "But I can't spill the reason."

If he did, he'd be throwing Daphne under the bus. No way he could say it.

Benjamin's eyes sparkled, a sly smile forming, and his deep voice hinted at his guess. "It's about Daphne, isn't it?"

"How did you..." Gavin stopped himself, quickly changing his tune. "How could it be about Daphne? What's she got to do with this?"

"Didn't you meet her that night? Don't give me that look. I just found out."

"Do you know why she came here?"

"Not really, but I know it wasn't for work." Benjamin's voice was smooth, his demeanor calming. "She doesn't want me to know, so I won't dig."

"Aren't you worried she's cheating?" Gavin asked, lips tight.

Gavin actually thought, 'You should be digging.'

He really hoped Benjamin would catch wind of Daphne's proposal plans.

But nope, Benjamin gave Daphne all the space she needed; if she didn't want him to know something, he wouldn't dig.

He knew that when the time was right, she'd spill the beans.

"She won't." Benjamin said, eyes twinkling with that lovestruck look. "I trust her."

"That's good." Gavin said, but inside, he was screaming.

Why wasn't Benjamin snooping around now? That would seal the deal for the proposal.

"By the way," Gavin tried to drop a hint. "Have you figured out when you're gonna pop the question to Daphne? Need any help?"

"Not yet." Benjamin's answer mirrored Daphne's but with more detail. "Once I get the ring, I'll chat with her friends, set a date, and then surprise her with the proposal."

"I see." Gavin felt a mix of emotions.

Why wasn't he asking more? Benjamin was usually sharp as a tack.

Benjamin's eyes locked onto Gavin, serious and intense. "Got something on your mind?"

"No," Gavin awkwardly denied.

He was acting all troubled; Benjamin should at least ask, right?

But nope, Benjamin, except for his laser focus on Daphne, usually didn't pry into others' business.

Benjamin figured it was better not to ask since Gavin didn't want to spill.

They kept eating.

Benjamin was mulling over when to see Daphne next, whether to call her first or just show up.

Gavin had one thought: 'Benjamin is so clueless.'

After the meal, they went their separate ways.

Gavin wanted to drop another hint before leaving, but Benjamin didn't catch on at all. Instead, he told Gavin that not everything needed to be said, which left Gavin frustrated as he got into his car and drove off.

Gavin had just reached the hotel and was planning to head upstairs to see Daphne and fill her in on today when he spotted Benjamin standing outside Daphne's door, about to knock.

He quickly whipped out his phone and shot Daphne a message.

After sending it, he walked over to greet Benjamin, "Benjamin? What brings you here?"

"I'm here to see Daphne," Benjamin said just as Daphne opened the door.

Seeing Gavin too, she opened the door wider and let them both in.

"Done with work?" Benjamin had given her a heads-up, so she wasn't surprised.

"Not yet." Daphne played her part well, leading them to the living room. "I'm still sorting through the materials Jesse brought over. He's got a meeting tomorrow afternoon, and I need to help him get these sorted."

Benjamin and Gavin both took a look.

Gavin was a bit stunned; didn't she say she wasn't on a business trip? These documents and tasks didn't look fake.

"You guys make yourselves at home. Coffee and drinks are over there; help yourselves." Daphne kept up the act, not wanting Benjamin to catch on. "I need to finish my work first."

Gavin instinctively glanced at Benjamin.

Benjamin knew she was acting and didn't call her out, casually grabbing two glasses of water and sitting on the sofa to wait for her to finish.
