Chapter 370 Charles's Situation

Daphne carefully looked over the document, paying close attention.

Benjamin sat next to her, watching. Her long, thick eyelashes fluttered like butterfly wings.

"Daphne," he called.

She looked at him. "Hmm?"

"You're really beautiful," he said with a smile.

Daphne was momentarily stunned, then calmly replied, "Thanks."

Benjamin raised an eyebrow. "Thanks?"

"Is this report legit?" Daphne asked, finding it hard to believe.

"Yeah," Benjamin said, getting serious. "Top experts analyzed it. Any errors should be minor."

Daphne frowned. Just then, Brian called. She glanced at Benjamin and answered.

"I'm at the base," Brian said. "Can you bring Charles over?"

"He's injured and sleeping," Daphne replied.

"Injured?" Brian asked, confused.

"Yeah," she said.

"Can you come over then?" Brian asked. "I need to discuss Charles's situation."

"Okay," Daphne agreed.

After hanging up, she told Benjamin.

"Go ahead," he said. "I'll look after Charles."

"Alright," she said, trusting him completely.

After briefing him on Charles's condition, she grabbed her car keys and left. Worried Charles might wake up and panic, she sent him a message.

Benjamin saw her finish the message and grabbed her arm.

"What's up?" she asked, puzzled.

"A quick goodbye hug," he said softly.

He hugged her, whispering, "Come home early. Don't leave your boyfriend alone too long."

Daphne blushed, not realizing Benjamin was so...

"Be careful," he said, kissing her forehead.

"Okay," she said, flustered, and rushed out.

Charles wasn't asleep. Lying in bed, he thought about Daphne.

He ignored his phone until he heard the front door close. Then he picked it up.

Daphne: [I'm out handling something. Rest at home. If you need anything, talk to Benjamin.]

Charles sat up abruptly, wincing in pain from his chest wound.

He wanted to ask if she really trusted Benjamin with him but deleted the message.

He put down his phone and decided to sleep, avoiding Benjamin.

Maybe after a nap, Daphne would be back.

Daphne drove to Brian's base, arriving a little after 5 PM.

Brian stood up when he saw her, still unsure if he should tell her everything. "You're here."

"Tell me about Charles's situation," Daphne said, getting straight to the point. "What's going on with him?"

"What happened today?" Brian asked first.

Daphne didn't hold back. She explained everything that happened earlier. "He said he's not Charles. He saw the agreement between you and Charles."

Brian frowned. This wasn't good.

"He is Charles," Brian clarified, "and he's not a new personality."

"What do you mean?" Daphne asked, playing dumb.

The report Benjamin brought back speculated on Charles's condition, but she wasn't sure if Brian would tell her the truth.

"Memory reset," Brian said, not hiding it. "It's part of our agreement, and he agreed to it to save you."

Daphne frowned slightly.

"But his current amnesia isn't my doing. It was caused by previous injuries and a fever," Brian quickly added. "I just gave him a little nudge after confirming his amnesia and mental regression."

Daphne stayed silent, waiting for him to continue. So far, Brian's words matched the report Benjamin brought back.

"In other words, without my mind trick, his amnesia and regression would make him act like a kid," Brian explained. "With my suggestion, he's developing the way I want."

"What kind of suggestion did you give him?" Daphne asked.

"It was about you," Brian admitted. "I intended for him to like you with his childhood personality, to cling to you. But after his amnesia, his feelings for you were so strong that his personality deviated, turning from simple affection to possessiveness."

Brian hadn't known this initially. When he gave Charles the psychological suggestion, he discovered Charles had deep guilt towards Daphne. He wanted to make amends and be good to her. But the suggestion was already in place and couldn't be retracted, leading to the current situation.

"Then why does he think he's a new personality?" Daphne asked again.

"He has no past memories and saw our previous agreement," Brian explained simply. "Plus, the side effects of the psychological suggestion. It's normal for him to misunderstand."

Daphne's heart sank, thinking, 'Is this research really necessary?'

"Why choose him?" Daphne asked. From previous events, it seemed Brian had targeted Charles long ago.

"He's highly intelligent and emotionally aware, with an unusually strong psychological defense," Brian explained. "If I succeeded with him, the success rate for others would be over ninety percent."

Resetting someone's memory and giving them a psychological suggestion to develop a desired personality.

Not resetting the memory was also an option. But the success rate would drop by about ten percent, and for those with extremely strong wills, it could drop by thirty percent.

Daphne remained silent. She didn't see the point of this research.

Brian saw her expression and knew she didn't fully agree, so he shifted the topic to Charles. "Charles's mental state has recovered. Based on his last check-up here, restoring his memory shouldn't be difficult."
