Chapter 7 What's the Fuss Again
Daphne put the remote control down, acting indifferent. "Then don't."
Charles: "?"
"When you are desperate to give Kayla a status, the price you offer to make me leave will be even higher," Daphne said seriously.
Charles's anger suddenly turned cold. He had never been threatened like this before.
Daphne was the first. "Do you really think I can't do anything to you?"
"How could I?" Daphne changed to another reality show, speaking sincerely. "You can freeze the cards you gave me, restrict my spending and freedom, send me to a remote place, and even..."
As he listened to her increasingly extreme words, Charles's anger inexplicably dissipated by half. He suddenly wanted to know.
How did the person who could provoke him to near death with just a single word manage to be gentle for two years in the past?
"But in that case, Kayla can only be a mistress hidden in the shadows," Daphne had already put her heart into it.
The atmosphere in the living room felt strange for a moment. Undeterred, Daphne pressed the play button on the remote, and the television began playing the currently popular reality show.
As soon as it started, the best actor, Samuel Lowell, and a few others were chatting after completing a task, which happened to be about crushes.
"Let me ask you a question. If you're already married and your crush suddenly comes back, would you choose to reunite with your crush or stay with your wife?"
"Of course, it would be my wife!"
"Anyone who chooses the crush must have a problem with their head."
"And you, Samuel?"
"I'm not a jerk," Samuel replied with a warm and soothing voice, exuding a sunny personality. "Life is a continuous journey. Those who choose their crush might not be able to differentiate between past resentment and persistence or true feelings."
"Wow, that's deep."
"Speaking of this, it reminds me of a friend who broke up with his current partner for his first love. He was a total jerk."
"Don't they say, 'When the ex-cries, the current loses'?"
"Hahaha..."
The reality show continued playing.
Charles's gaze became profound, laden with a slightly oppressive feeling as he looked at Daphne. He seriously doubted if she was mocking him.
"Daphne."
"Yes?"
"I can agree to your terms," Charles made a concession for the divorce and discussed the conditions with her. "But before cutting off contact with Kayla, I want to investigate her car accident."
"Fine," Daphne didn't delve any further. "If there's any need to negotiate with Kayla during this period, you can ask Mark to handle it."
Charles hesitated, wanting to refuse.
However, considering his parents' and grandfather's fondness for Daphne, he reluctantly agreed, "Alright."
"You can go and take care of your business first." Daphne seemed even more eager for the divorce than him. "Pick me up at six o'clock."
"Okay."
After finishing their conversation, Daphne turned off the TV and walked upstairs wearing slippers. The distance between them grew invisibly, and the two hearts that had once been close were gradually drifting apart.
As Daphne closed her bedroom door, Charles felt an indescribable sense of strangeness in his heart.
It was as if something was about to be lost.
He furrowed his brow, reached up and adjusted his tie. The fair and slender joints of his fingers were distinct, like a gift from a creator, so attractive that it was hard to look away.
After taking one last glance at the closed door, he left the villa and headed to the company. The investigation into Kayla's car accident was still ongoing.
Daphne took a shower and then took a nap. She was awakened by the sound of her phone ringing.
Seeing that it was a call from Lab Rat, she rubbed her slightly groggy head and slid the answer button, “Hello”
"Daphne! Daphne! Daphne!" Kevin exclaimed excitedly, his voice filled with a strong sense of youth.
"..."
She held the phone a little farther away, and after not hearing any sound, she spoke, "What's the matter?"
"Evan is here."
"?"
"Evan Winston."
"What is he here for?" Daphne's mind was filled with confusion.
"He said he was entrusted by Mr. Murphy to handle your divorce with Charles." Kevin said with little confidence, but couldn't resist his curiosity, "Did you really secretly marry Charles?"
Daphne pinched her tired brow.
Kevin continued to ask, "Daphne?"
"When did he arrive?" Daphne felt somewhat helpless.
"Around eleven o'clock in the evening." Kevin was extremely curious, but didn't dare to keep asking, "He just went to the airport."
Daphne was thinking about how to stop it. "Understood."
After saying that, she hung up the phone.
When they got married, Charles never asked about her identity. On holidays and special occasions, when he asked if she wanted to go back home, she said she didn't, and he didn't inquire further.
If Evan came, it would definitely attract Charles's attention.
Kevin quickly opened the WhatsApp chat box, and his fingers danced on the keyboard as he bombarded Daphne with messages.
Lab Rat: [You haven't told me if it's true that you got married.]
Lab Rat: [Why did your father say you're getting a divorce?]
Lab Rat: [What happened in the past two years?]
Lab Rat: [Daphne, where are you?]
Daphne looked at the string of messages and carefully considered before finally sending a reply: [It's true, our relationship has fallen apart.]
Lab Rat's mind exploded: [!!!!!!!!]
Even a string of exclamation marks couldn't express half of his excitement.
His Daphne, his idol, got married!!! They actually got married!
Lab Rat: [Oh my god, are you kidding me?]
Daphne ignored this question and added a... [To be continued.]
