Chapter 291 Make Daphne Like Him a Little Bit

Daphne tidied up the guest room and, after making sure everything was set, told Charles, "You'll sleep here. There are new toiletries in the bathroom. If you need anything, just call me."

"Okay," Charles said, standing there obediently.

"Go wash up and get to bed," Daphne added.

Charles didn't move.

Remembering what Brian had said, Daphne asked, "What's wrong?"

"I don't have any clean clothes to change into," Charles mumbled, fidgeting with his fingers. He didn't want to bother Daphne.

"You go wash up first," Daphne said, a flicker of emotion in her eyes. "I'll borrow a set for you from next door."

Benjamin and Charles were about the same size, so pajamas shouldn't be a problem. For everyday clothes, she'd have Mark bring some over tomorrow.

Just as she finished speaking, there was a knock on the door.

When Daphne opened it, she saw Benjamin holding a bag. "You probably don't have suitable pajamas for him. These are new and never worn."

"Benjamin," Daphne paused, surprised by his thoughtfulness.

Benjamin's lips curved slightly. "Give them to him."

After thanking Benjamin, Daphne turned to give the clothes to Charles, who was still standing there.

"These are from Benjamin," she said, handing them over.

"Thank you, Benjamin," Charles mumbled, taking the clothes. He didn't like talking to people, but he knew he should say thank you. He didn't want Daphne to think he was a bad kid.

Charles took the clothes and went to shower, behaving very well.

Benjamin gave Daphne a look and asked, "What's going on?"

"Brian said he has amnesia, and his mental state is like that of a five-year-old," Daphne explained, taking Benjamin to the living room. "There's no medical treatment for this; we just have to wait for him to recover on his own and go for monthly check-ups with Brian."

Benjamin's eyes darkened slightly. "What do you think?"

"I'll talk to Uncle Hayden tomorrow," Daphne said slowly. "If Uncle Hayden wants to take him back, he can go back to Ivrea City. If not, I'll take care of him for now."

"Okay," Benjamin agreed.

Daphne called him, "Benjamin."

"Yes?" he replied.

"Do you have experience raising children?" Daphne asked, "I don't know how to take care of Charles in this situation."

"Just treat him like a five-year-old," Benjamin said gently. "If you're not sure, I can help you."

Daphne paused and agreed. "Okay."

That night, Charles didn't sleep well.

In his dreams, he kept seeing blurry images. There was him and Daphne, who had brought him back. When he tried to see what was happening, the images would turn into a white light and disappear.

Over and over, every short dream was the same.

As for Daphne, after washing up and lying in bed, her mind was filled with Brian's words, especially the one about how Charles's actions after getting hurt showed that he really loved her.

Love? Daphne didn't think so. She felt it was more about guilt and making amends.

One month before their divorce, they were very unhappy, with endless arguments and misunderstandings. Given Charles's personality, he would want to make amends after truly realizing his mistakes.

The incident on Butterfly Island might have been Charles's way of making amends.

Unable to figure it out, Daphne decided to stop thinking about it. Whether it was love or guilt, it didn't matter anymore.

She slept dreamlessly through the night.

The next morning, Daphne woke up to some noise in the living room. She rubbed her sleepy head, got dressed, and opened the door.

When she walked into the living room and saw the busy figure at the dining table, she paused.

What was going on? Had Charles recovered?

Sensing Daphne was awake, Charles set the breakfast table and looked at her with hopeful eyes. "Daphne, I made breakfast. Do you want to try it?"

Daphne, still in a daze, walked to the dining table. "Did you make all this?"

"Yes!" Charles said, smiling.

Daphne pressed her lips together. "When did you get up?"

"Five o'clock," Charles replied, his eyes bright. "I didn't know what you liked, so I made a bit of everything."

Daphne wanted to tell him not to worry about such things, but she remembered Charles wasn't a child in the true sense. In the end, all her words turned into one question. "Did Brian teach you how to cook?"

Charles shook his head. "No."

"Then how do you know how to cook?" Daphne asked.

"I don't know," Charles said honestly. "When I went into the kitchen, I just knew how."

Daphne looked at him with a complex expression. "You don't need to get up so early to make breakfast. If you're hungry, call me. I'll order something for you."

For a moment, she hoped Charles had regained his memory and mental state.

However, looking at the dishes in front of her, she could tell he was telling the truth. In the two years they were married, she had eaten his breakfasts and meals and knew his cooking habits and style.

A child really made this—just a child with a natural talent for cooking.

"Daphne," Charles's eyes dimmed a bit.

Daphne was still looking at the food and didn't notice. "Yes?"

"Is it that none of this breakfast is to your liking?" Charles pressed his lips together, his eyes darkening.

Charles just wanted to help Daphne with something, to make her like him a little bit more. But now, it seemed he had messed up.

"No," Daphne reassured him, thinking of his mental state. "I just don't want you to get up early to make breakfast because I want you to sleep more."

"I'm not sleepy," Charles quickly said, his dim eyes lighting up again. "If you don't mind, I can get up every morning to make you breakfast."

"Really, there's no need," Daphne insisted. "Be good."

Charles wanted to insist but was afraid that saying too much would upset Daphne. In the end, he could only say, "Okay."

"You eat first," Daphne said. "I'll wash up and be right back."

"Okay," Charles agreed, but he still waited for Daphne to come back before he started eating.

During breakfast, Charles kept observing Daphne, noting what she ate more of and what she ate less of.

Charles had already decided that whatever Daphne liked, he would make for her in the future.

After breakfast, Daphne told Charles to sit on the couch and play while she put the dishes in the dishwasher.

After finishing these tasks, Daphne informed Benjamin and Jesse that she wouldn't be going to the office today.
