Chapter 570 Who Likes Someone on a Whim for over Ten Years

Elara took a sip of water and said, "Didn't I tell you it was all just an act?"

"You didn't give us a heads-up," Harry said, clearly worried.

He had no clue about this big deal.

Elara bit her lip, wanting to say something but holding back.

"Aren't you trying to pursue him?" Harry was baffled by the younger generation's dating habits. "It's only been a few days, and you're already giving up?"

"Pursuing him is pointless," Elara said, still troubled.

"How do you know if you don't try? If I were Jesse, I wouldn't want to be with someone who gives up so easily," Harry said. "Who knows if you're just into him on a whim."

Elara sighed, "Who likes someone on a whim for over ten years?"

"Over ten years?" Harry asked.

Elara quickly corrected herself, "Ten years."

"If I remember right, ten years ago you were eighteen and already studying abroad," Harry recalled Elara skipping grades. "How did you fall for him while being in different countries?"

Elara bit her lip and stayed silent.

She had told Jesse it was ten years because it sounded more significant, but in reality, it was much longer.

"Be honest, did you like him back in high school?" Harry started digging into the past.

Seeing the atmosphere, Elara admitted, "Yes."

"You started liking someone that young?" Harry asked.

"I just had a crush on him back then; it wasn't that deep," Elara confessed. "Besides, I never confessed, so how could it be called like?"

"A crush is still liking someone," Harry argued.

Elara went along with him, "Even if I did like him back then, it didn't have a negative impact. I was top of my class and won all the awards; it didn't affect my studies."

Harry pursed his lips, not knowing what to say.

Elara had always been someone they could trust.

"So what if you were good at studying? You still didn't win over the person you like," Harry started to bicker with her.

"Mom," Elara said seriously, "Can you get me a new dad? I want a new dad who loves and cares for me and speaks to me gently."

"Let me know who you choose," Zara sided with Elara.

Harry was furious. "Choose what? What are you going to do that's excessive?"

Elara glanced at him and said nothing.

Zara spoke up, "Elara is upset, and instead of comforting her, you're making it worse. Is this how you act as a father?"

"How did I not comfort her?" Harry argued.

Zara and Elara looked at him, puzzled.

Harry explained seriously, "Wasn't she feeling down and unhappy before? But after arguing with me, she's just angry now."

"You're something else," Elara admitted defeat.

Harry felt proud.

After the small talk, Zara started to care about Elara's love life. "What's going on between you and Jesse?"

"It's complicated. Simply put, I like him, and he likes me," Elara was preoccupied with when Willie's plan would work. "But he's worried about something and rejected my feelings."

"Didn't you ask?" Zara asked.

"I did, but he didn't spill," Elara fiddled with her phone, feeling a bit complicated. "With his stubbornness, if he didn't say it the first time, asking again won't help."

"What if the act with Willie doesn't work?" Zara was worried.

"If it doesn't work, I'll just wait," Elara had already thought about this. "Wait until he's willing to marry me. If he never is, I'll keep waiting."

Zara and Harry exchanged a complex look.

Zara spoke up, "Can't you like someone else?"

"If I could, I would have already," Elara felt a bit heavy-hearted. "He's a really, really good person. Besides him, I can't find anyone else as good."

He always considered her in everything, taking responsibility regardless of right or wrong.

Sometimes Elara thought Jesse was so foolish, foolish enough that she couldn't let go once she liked him.

"We can't be with you forever," Zara was most worried about not having anyone to take care of Elara in the future. "What will you do when we're gone?"

"It's still early," Elara quickly replied. "Besides, how do you know the act won't work?"

Harry and Zara clearly had concerns.

Elara added, "No matter the outcome, he has to be with me in the end. He said himself he hasn't considered marriage."

"Just because he hasn't considered it doesn't mean his family won't push him," Harry, understanding parents, spoke with complexity. "In two or three years, he'll be forced to marry."

"He wouldn't dare," Elara started to get fierce.

Harry thought, 'He already rejected you, what wouldn't he dare?'

Elara started to throw a tantrum, with a bit of arrogance, "If he marries someone he doesn't like, I'll go beat him up."

"You're all talk," Harry knew Elara well. "If that really happens, you'll probably cry your eyes out."

"We'll give you time to act. If he marries someone else and you still haven't won him over, you'll have to follow our arrangements and get married," Harry concluded. "Your mom and I can't just watch you live alone forever."

"Got it," Elara agreed verbally, but she had her own thoughts.

She didn't want to marry someone she didn't like. In her view of love and marriage, only two people who love each other getting married counts as marriage.

After the family meeting, Elara went upstairs.

Lying on her bed, she wasn't in a good mood. After playing with her phone for a while, she posted a social media update: [Not happy.]

Only Jesse's alternate account could see it.

Less than ten minutes after posting, Jesse contacted her with his alternate account.

Jason: [What's wrong?]

Elara played dumb and replied: [ ? ]

Jason: [I saw your social media update saying you're not happy. Did something happen?]

"I confessed to someone I like and got rejected," Elara sent him a voice message, conveying all her emotions. "In a fit of anger, I decided to marry someone I don't like."

After sending it, Elara continued, "Thinking about spending the rest of my life with someone I don't like makes me feel like I can see the end already."

Jason: [Don't act on impulse. Marriage is a serious commitment.]
