Chapter 598 The Feelings between Girls
If Evelyn hadn't called Elara, she could've just ignored the whole thing. But Evelyn did call. If something bad happened because she didn't show up, Elara would probably beat herself up forever.
After all, clubs were a mess.
Evelyn and her friends were all hot and had killer bodies. If they got wasted, things could go south real quick.
Jesse was still confused. "What do you mean?"
"Evelyn asked me to pick her up," Elara said, finding it all pretty weird. She'd known Evelyn for years, and their daily squabbles and mutual annoyance were the norm.
Evelyn often went out drinking and clubbing with her friends but had never called Elara before. Today was definitely out of the ordinary.
Meanwhile, Evelyn was waiting in a private room. She didn't even know why she called Elara, she just suddenly missed her.
About ten minutes later, Elara and Jesse showed up.
"I asked you to come, why'd you bring your boyfriend?" Evelyn started their usual banter, grinning. "Aren't you scared I'll steal him?"
"A boyfriend who can be stolen isn't a boyfriend," Elara shot back.
Evelyn asked, "Then what is he?"
"Trash," Elara said flatly.
Evelyn seemed to think of something and smiled. "Right, that's trash."
"Didn't you want me to keep you company? Come on, lean on my shoulder," Elara sat next to her.
Evelyn asked, "Do you find me annoying?"
Elara nodded. "Yep."
"Do you dislike me?" Evelyn pressed.
Elara replied, "Would you like yourself if you were me?"
"No," Evelyn smiled, her tone softening. "If you don't like me, why'd you come to pick me up?"
Elara thought she must've lost her mind to come.
"Do you know you're really naive? People like you are too easy to manipulate," Evelyn said sincerely but also found Elara's presence comforting. "You might get duped and not even know it."
"What are you really trying to say?" Elara sensed this wasn't the real reason Evelyn called her over.
Evelyn stood up and poured two glasses of wine from the table, handing one to Elara. "Just drink with me for a bit."
Jesse stopped her. He didn't know Evelyn, but his first impression wasn't great. Naturally, he was wary of anything Evelyn gave Elara.
"Relax, it's just a regular drink, no funny business," Evelyn explained.
Jesse still kept blocking her; he didn't trust Evelyn.
"Is this okay?" Evelyn handed Elara a new bottle, taking one for herself too. "If I knew you were like this, I wouldn't have tried to steal you from Elara earlier. You're so boring."
"Evelyn," Elara found Evelyn really off today.
Evelyn opened the bottle for Elara and handed it to her, continuing their usual banter, "You're boring too. Why are you so protective of a guy?"
"Someone like you, who changes partners every few days, wouldn't get it," Elara retorted instinctively, unaware of Evelyn's past.
"I used to be protected by someone who only had eyes for me, just like you." Evelyn opened her bottle, took a sip, and continued, "We were together for four years, but in the end, reality caught up with us."
Reality? Wasn't Evelyn's family pretty loaded?
"Your parents didn't approve of him?" Elara asked. It was the only thing that made sense to her.
"He dumped me for his future," Evelyn said, her face totally blank, not a hint of sadness. "My family's just in business. Compared to real power, the future with me was less promising."
With that simple sentence, Elara got it. Evelyn had someone she loved deeply for years, but he ditched her for someone more powerful.
"So since then, you've been swapping boyfriends and hitting up clubs and bars?" Elara asked.
Evelyn paused, took another sip. "Pretty much."
"How boring," Elara remarked.
Evelyn's lips curved into a slight smile, her whole demeanor relaxed. The reason she said these things in front of Elara was that she knew what Elara would say after hearing them.
Over the years, whenever Evelyn brought up this matter, Aria and Stella were always super concerned about her. But so much time had passed that she didn't need concern, just someone like Elara to break through and scold her a bit.
"If I were you, I'd become a better version of myself," Elara felt some sympathy but knew that was the last thing Evelyn needed. "The world won't stop turning because of what happens to you, and life doesn't end without a man."
Evelyn's family background wasn't bad, she was well-educated, and her external conditions were excellent. How could someone like that be trapped by love?
"Then give me Jesse," Evelyn started bickering with Elara again.
"Do you believe I'll throw you into the bathroom to sober you up?" Elara replied irritably, putting down the bottle without taking a sip. "Wake them up, I'll take you all home."
Evelyn smiled lightly, "Thank you, love you!"
"Get lost," Elara said bluntly.
Evelyn just smiled without speaking, got up, woke Aria and Stella, and helped them into the car.
It was almost eleven when they arrived at Evelyn's apartment. As they were leaving, Evelyn called out to Elara, "Elara."
"Don't tell me you want me to take care of three drunk people," Elara said seriously. "Not happening."
"Well, actually, I want you to teach me how to manage the company," Evelyn acknowledged Elara's abilities, her usual smile replaced by seriousness. "I've forgotten most of what I learned over the years. Don't worry, I'll pay you."
Elara paused for a moment and agreed, "Meet me at the Gonzalez Group next Monday."
"Thank you, Elara," Evelyn returned to her usual composed smile.
After Elara closed the door, she left with Jesse. Jesse was puzzled by their relationship. "I thought you didn't like her?"
"I never said I liked her," Elara replied naturally.
"Then why did you agree to help her?" Jesse was confused by the night's events. "And take her home."
"It's hard to explain to you. The feelings between girls are complicated," Elara explained casually as they walked into the elevator. "We can have a cold war for a long time or even part ways over something that seems small to outsiders, or we can become friends over something we both dislike or like."
