Chapter 257 Your Teacher Did the Right Thing
Daphne was speechless. She always knew Nina could talk a lot when she wasn't busy, but she never imagined she could chatter so much in person.
Was she always so friendly?
"What? You think I'd hurt you?" Nina asked, noticing Daphne's silence.
"I don't need your company or your shoulder," Daphne replied coolly, looking away, "If there's nothing else, please leave."
Nina leaned in closer. "Daphne, don't be so distant."
Daphne felt helpless. If she hadn't hidden it so well from the start, she might have suspected Nina had figured her out.
"Are you worried Charles won't come and you'll be in danger?" Nina asked, still friendly.
Daphne stayed silent.
Nina continued, "Don't worry, he'll definitely come. We brought you here because we know he cares about you. Just smile."
Daphne was speechless.
Nina said, "Even if you don't care about yourself, think about the baby. Your stress affects it, too."
Daphne frowned. "How do you know I'm pregnant?"
She hoped Nina would leave soon. Keeping up act was exhausting.
"I know everything about you. Give me a computer, and I can find out anything," Nina said, getting more excited as Daphne finally spoke.
Daphne decided to play along. "Really?"
"Of course! Ask me anything. I guarantee I can find the answer," Nina said confidently.
Daphne remained expressionless. "How long will you live?"
"How many hairs do you have?"
"How many cells are in your body?" Daphne fired off a series of questions.
Nina suddenly went quiet.
She looked at Daphne and blurted out, "Your tricky questions remind me of someone."
Daphne raised an eyebrow.
"My teacher," Nina said, "When she taught me, I'd always ask her about real-life stuff after class. She didn't like to talk, so she'd ask me questions like that."
Daphne didn't respond, her expression unchanged.
Nina poked her face. "Why aren't you talking?"
"I think your teacher had the right idea," Daphne said, praising herself.
"I don't think so. I never understand what you quiet types are thinking," Nina said, propping her chin up, "Don't you get bored not talking?"
Before she could finish, she saw Daphne lying on the bed, asleep, completely ignoring her.
Nina was stunned. She hadn't even finished talking. She wanted to pull her up and chat about life, but considering the baby, she decided against it.
That night, Nina stayed over.
Daphne thought about kicking her out, but since she wasn't causing trouble, she let it slide.
She'd inform Emma and the others about the plan later.
As for Charles, he had been waiting for Michael's call all night.
He didn't dare relax for a moment. Just when he started to think his phone might be broken, Mark told him Kevin had arrived.
Seeing him, Charles knew it was Daphne's doing.
He didn't stop Kevin and let him into the house.
"Mr. Lancelot, Michael should be messaging you soon," Kevin said, holding a laptop. Despite his youthful appearance, he was very composed. "No matter what he sends, please stay calm and rational."
"Daphne's in danger?" Charles inferred.
Kevin followed Daphne's instructions. "No."
Charles didn't buy it.
If she wasn't in danger, why send Kevin to follow him?
As they were talking, Charles's phone buzzed. He almost dismissed it as spam but saw it was an email.
His heart tightened, a bad feeling creeping in.
He opened the email and clicked on the video.
The moment the content appeared, his heart clenched. There was Daphne, bound in a basement.
He forced down his worry and handed the phone to Kevin. "Is this what you call 'not in danger'?"
"Daphne isn't afraid of snakes," Kevin said calmly, "The video probably cuts off because she killed all the snakes."
Charles's lips pressed into a thin line, not speaking.
Just as he was about to ask Kevin if he knew where Daphne was, an unknown number called.
He glanced at Kevin, answered, and put it on speaker.
"Charles, did you like the video I sent?" Michael's voice, altered by a voice changer, was unrecognizable.
Charles's expression turned dangerous. "Who are you?"
"Who I am doesn't matter. What's important is if you want Daphne and her baby safe, you must follow my instructions," Michael spoke slowly, making each word sink in, "Otherwise, your baby will be the first to go."
"What baby?" Charles asked, keeping his cool.
Kevin sighed in relief. He didn't give it away!
"You should thank me," Michael continued, realizing Charles didn't know, "If I hadn't arranged for someone to tamper with things on your grandpa's birthday, you wouldn't have a baby on the way."
Charles stayed silent.
This timely silence made Michael think he was contemplating the truth.
"If you don't believe me, check the pregnancy test report in your email," Michael added. "After reading it, decide whether to follow my instructions."
Saying that, Michael hung up.
If Daphne hadn't planned with Charles in advance, he'd be freaking out right now.
However, even so, he couldn't help but worry about her.
"Don't worry, Daphne is fine," Kevin repeated.
Charles didn't respond. He opened the new email and clicked on the picture.
Daphne had indeed thought of everything. She even had prepared for this.
After looking at the photo, he noticed more text in the email.
[If you don't want anything to happen to Daphne, go to the beach and sit there for a night by 6 PM today. Remember, you can only wear a shirt on your upper body. If you don't do it, I'll throw Daphne into ice water for a night. And if you call the police, I'll kill her.]
After reading this, Charles grabbed his phone and headed out.
Kevin stopped him. "Where are you going?"
"To the beach," Charles said.
