Chapter 331 Marriage Should Be Sacred and Happy
"But my dad's about to get out of prison," Summer said, looking worried. "He still holds a grudge against Mom for reporting his abuse. Life's gonna be tough."
Lydia frowned. She hated domestic violence but knew Alexander couldn't support them forever.
Daphne's eyes flickered. It was Sophia seeking assistance from Alexander regarding the abuse that set off the chain of events that followed.Mixed feelings welled up inside her.
"The property I gave you has top-notch security and exclusive shopping for residents," Alexander said calmly. "As long as you don't reach out to him, he can't get in."
Sophia had divorced the guy. Even if he tried to cause trouble, the community security would stop him.
"But we have to go out eventually," Summer insisted.
"If you face any danger, call the police," Alexander said firmly. "I've also given you enough money to hire bodyguards. As long as you don't splurge on luxury items, you should live comfortably."
Sophia and Summer paused, realizing Alexander wanted no more ties with them. Daphne and Lydia were his priority.
The conversation ended. Sophia understood her efforts over the past two years were in vain. She had overestimated her importance to Alexander and underestimated his care for Daphne.
She had thought, 'If I make Alexander dislike Daphne, it'll be enough.'
However, she now realized she had the freedom to do anything except directly confront Daphne and Lydia.
When they left, Alexander had the driver take them partway. He didn't want anything happening to them near his place late at night.
After they left, the living room fell silent.
"Dad," Lydia spoke up.
"Yes?" Alexander replied.
"Where did you give them a house?" Lydia asked.
"I just bought it," Alexander said, feeling a bit guilty. "It's in the northern area, far from downtown but not too remote."
"And the money?" Lydia asked.
"What about it?" Alexander said.
"You said you gave them some money," Lydia pressed.
Alexander coughed, feeling embarrassed. Was Lydia going to hold him accountable? But it was his money, right?
"Yes, $30 million," Alexander admitted. He had calculated their expenses, and this amount should keep them comfortable as long as they didn't buy luxury items. Plus, he had already given them a house.
Lydia thought for a moment but didn't say much. Daphne stayed calm, not getting involved in the money and house matters.
"I've made a decision," Alexander said seriously, looking at them warmly. "I'm not getting married again. I'll just stay with you two, watch you get married, and as long as you're happy, that's all that matters."
"You better keep your word," Lydia joked.
"I promise I won't," Alexander said confidently.
"I'm not planning to get married for now," Daphne said upfront. "Even if you meet someone great, don't introduce them to me."
"Daphne..."
Lydia and Alexander were both taken aback. It caught them off guard.
"Are you still not over Charles?" Alexander asked, concerned.
"It's not about that," Daphne said calmly. "I just don't want to get married for the sake of it. Marriage should be sacred and happy."
Daphne had let go of Charles. By the time they officially divorced, she had already adjusted, though it was still painful. But now, she had let it go.
"Daphne," Lydia poked her. "If you say that, I don't want to get married either. How about we support each other and grow old together?"
"Sure," Daphne said, seeing through her trick. "But what about Nick?"
Lydia shot Daphne an anxious expression, her face contorted.
Daphne was puzzled at first, then realized. But before she could say anything, Alexander's puzzled voice came. "Who's Nick? You have a boyfriend?"
Lydia immediately looked to Daphne for help.
"What are you afraid of?" Daphne teased. "Didn't you say you wanted to grow old with me? I'll have Dad break you two up, giving you a perfect reason to break up."
"Daphne!" Lydia puffed her cheeks. "You're so mean!"
Daphne knocked on her forehead. "See if you still talk nonsense in the future."
"No more," Lydia said, instantly obedient.
Alexander was still confused. He stared at Lydia for a long time before asking, "When did you get a boyfriend? How come I didn't know? How old is he? How did you meet? What is he like? Why didn't you tell me?"
A series of questions made Lydia feel wronged.
"They started dating before, and he's from the same school as Lydia," Daphne explained. "They're about the same age, and he's a good person."
"What about his family background?" Alexander asked.
Lydia's heart was in her throat. Nick's family background was quite ordinary. Would Alexander object?
"Do you care about family background?" Daphne asked.
"It should be clean and honest," Alexander said. "He should be upright."
"He's very upright, extremely upright!" Lydia chimed in, her eyes brighter than ever. "His parents are very nice, his sister is adorable, and the whole family is kind."
Both Daphne and Alexander's eyes fell on her.
Lydia looked confused. "What's wrong?"
