Chapter 313 Jesse's Heart
If Charles got pushed too far, who knew what might happen?
Thinking about this, Mark hurriedly opened the bottle and handed a glass to Jesse. "Just so you know, we're not leaving until we're drunk tonight. You too."
"Okay," Jesse agreed without hesitation.
A lot had happened recently, and he had some uncertainties on his mind.
Mark and Jesse ate and drank, chatting about trivial stuff. After a while, they were both a bit tipsy.
Normally, Jesse wouldn't let himself get drunk, but today he wanted to. There were things he could only say when he was drunk.
"Jesse," Mark, now quite drunk, grabbed Jesse and asked, "Is your company still hiring?"
"Yes," Jesse replied, his usually cool face looking a bit more adorable in his drunken state. "But we're not hiring assistants anymore."
Mark asked, "Then what about me?"
Jesse asked, "What?"
Mark said, "What if I lose my job? If I stay any longer, Mr. Lancelot will fire me sooner or later."
If he were sober, Jesse would definitely be suspicious. The Lancelot Group was managed by Hayden, and Mark owned the branch in Gedser, so there was no way he could be fired.
However, Jesse had other things on his mind and didn't think much about it.
"I'll take care of you," Jesse said simply. "I have a lot of money."
"That won't work. If your girlfriend finds out, she'll definitely suspect we have an improper relationship," Mark said seriously. "I'm as clean as a whistle."
Jesse sat there properly, his usual cool demeanor gone, looking very obedient in his drunken state.
Mark had rarely seen him like this and said, "But isn't it a bit unfair for a guy like you to have such smooth skin?"
Jesse wondered if that was his fault.
"I'm telling you, not only girls need to protect themselves outside, but good-looking guys like you also need to be careful," Mark said earnestly, though with a drunken slur. "Once, when I was out with Mr. Lancelot for business, we met a rich guy who was into boys."
Mark added, "That scene was disgusting for both me and Mr. Lancelot."
Even now, Mark couldn't get used to it. He wasn't disgusted by gay people, but by that rich guy's behavior.
Jesse frowned, his aura suddenly intense. "Did he hit on you?"
"I'm Mr. Lancelot's man; how dare he," Mark said proudly. "After we went into the private room to talk business, that guy brought in a few good-looking people, both men and women, all in their early twenties."
When Jesse went out with Daphne, nothing like that ever happened. After all, he had a fierce reputation; everyone who knew HorizonTech Group knew Jesse was not to be messed with.
"That rich guy told Mr. Lancelot to pick anyone he liked and said he had more if needed," Mark continued. "In the end, the deal fell through."
Mark still remembered that when Charles found out that the rich guy had forced a lot of people, he sent him to jail.
Back then, Charles was indifferent but just.
But now, how could he start deceiving Daphne, almost resorting to unscrupulous means?
"In any case, you gotta protect yourself," Mark said again. "Especially don't get drunk outside. Look at you now, just like a girl."
"I'm a man," Jesse said seriously. "No one can bully me."
Whoever tried would get beaten up; in this circle, few could take him on.
"Yeah, yeah, you're a man; you're right," Mark said, clearly just humoring him.
They chatted for a while longer.
Jesse finally got to the point, asking the question that had been on his mind, "Mark, do you know what it's like to like someone?"
"Like?" Mark asked.
Jesse nodded. "Yeah."
"I don't know; I've never been in love," Mark said earnestly. "But from what I've seen, liking someone means thinking about them day and night, wanting to buy them nice things, and sharing happy moments with them first."
Jesse paused; he didn't seem to have those feelings.
"Aren't you into Ms. Murphy? Don't you know yourself?" Mark blurted out.
Jesse paused, not knowing how to answer.
He didn't know if he liked Daphne. He didn't have the feelings Mark described, but he did want Daphne to be well.
"If you really can't tell if you like her, there's a simple test," Mark said, sounding like an expert. "When you see her with someone else, do you get upset?"
His heart answered, 'Sometimes, yes.'
When Jesse found out Daphne got married and divorced, he was more upset that Charles didn't cherish her and wanted to beat him up, but he didn't have many other emotions.
However, when he saw Daphne making Benjamin her assistant and almost always being together, he felt a bit unhappy.
"What's wrong?" Mark asked, seeing him silent and poking his face.
"Nothing." Jesse didn't know where to start.
Mark, acting like he understood emotions well, said, "If you still don't know, just think about whether you'd be okay with her being with someone else. Would you rather take care of her yourself or let someone else do it?"
"Either is fine," Jesse said seriously.
Mark perked up a bit at this.
"If that person can take good care of her, warm her, be good to her, and make sure she eats three meals a day, it doesn't matter if it's me or him," Jesse said, for the first time not hiding his thoughts, emboldened by the alcohol. "But if that person can't, I won't be happy."
He also wanted to break them up, but Jesse didn't say that part because it wasn't appropriate.
Mark blinked and suddenly said, "You see her as a sister to protect, don't you?"
Love was selfish. Even if you wanted her to have a better future with someone else, your heart would still have ups and downs, feel pain, and wonder why you weren't good enough.
However, Jesse's feelings were calm, with no emotional fluctuations. Clearly, it wasn't love but familial affection.
"But I don't want her to leave me, and I don't want her to push me away," Jesse added.
"That's to be expected. You and Ms. Murphy don't share any blood relation." Mark immediately assumed Jesse was referring to Daphne. "If you separate, it's a complete separation, with no ties left. Naturally, you don't want her to leave you."
Jesse's eyes flickered. He thought, 'Is that so?'
"One more question. Have you ever imagined holding hands, kissing, or hugging Ms. Murphy?" Mark suddenly asked out of curiosity.
