Chapter 457 We Won't Lose
So far, Laird had only ever lost to Benjamin in a one-on-one fight, like, worldwide.
Daphne's got mad skills, killer aim, and all that jazz, but she still can't quite measure up to Benjamin. In a straight-up brawl, she'd be toast against Laird.
Now that she's caught him off guard, she couldn't let his smooth talk mess up her edge.
"Mr. Sullivan, you say she's K."
"The K who, in a tag team, wiped the floor with you and Aike alongside Benjamin?"
The two lackeys were floored. K had always been a mystery, never showing her face.
Whenever stuff went down, Benjamin would say K wasn't fully in the crew and couldn't show up 'cause of her real-life commitments.
But now, K turned out to be this drop-dead gorgeous girl.
"Get out." Laird thought these two were being way too disrespectful. "If Aike hadn't screwed up back then, I wouldn't have lost."
"Yeah, sure," they replied, not really buying it.
Daphne didn't give a damn about their chatter.
Laird dug her focus.
But they weren't enemies, and now that he knew who Daphne was, he decided to chill with the teasing.
"K, put the gun down, and let's go chat in another room," Laird suggested, setting down the playing cards he was holding. "This whole kidnapping thing? Just for kicks. We mainly wanted to see how Benjamin would react."
Daphne didn't budge. She wasn't sure if he was bluffing, so she wasn't about to let her guard down.
Laird sighed. "If you don't believe me, I'll call Benjamin right now."
"Go ahead," Daphne said, cool as a cucumber.
With a mix of feelings, he made the call. No answer.
"Mr. Sullivan, something's up!"
"Benjamin's taken over our base!"
"Mr. Sullivan!"
Someone burst in, and everyone looked confused.
Laird knew his crew well and didn't waste time with Daphne, heading outside.
As soon as he opened the door, a red dot appeared on his forehead.
"Mr. Sullivan." The two lackeys were freaking out, realizing the joke had gone too far. "There's a sniper."
Laird knew he was in the crosshairs!
"Benjamin! Show yourself." Laird was pissed, never thinking Benjamin would take it this seriously. "I was just messing with you, and you took it to heart."
And he brought a sniper, what a jerk.
Benjamin showed up in a suit, looking all classy and calm, with this super chill vibe.
He stood not far away, a slight smile on his lips, and spoke in a smooth, unhurried tone. "You kidnapped my girl and called it a joke?"
Laird muttered under his breath, "Why's Benjamin gotta be so dramatic?"
"Where's my crew?" Laird scanned the area, not seeing any of his men. "What did you do to them?"
"Just knocked 'em out and locked 'em up. If I didn't need a couple to give you the heads-up, there wouldn't be a single one left here," Benjamin said seriously, feeling a wave of relief seeing Daphne safe.
"Did you really have to go that far?"
"You started it."
Hearing this, Laird knew he was in the wrong.
He stepped aside and gave Daphne a genuine apology, "My bad. I just wanted to mess with Benjamin and see how he'd react if his girl got nabbed. Didn't think it'd blow up like this."
Daphne instinctively glanced at Benjamin. She wasn't too bothered, but she cared about how Benjamin felt.
"If you really wanna make it up to us, show us that new weapon you've been working on," Benjamin strolled over, looking all chill and classy. "Empty words of apology doesn't cut it."
Benjamin was still such a pain!
"If not that, then hand over your card." Benjamin never held back with him. "Since we're here, might as well get something out of it."
Laird didn't hesitate and had someone hand his bank card to Daphne.
Benjamin took it for her, wrapping up the whole mess like it was just a joke.
While Laird went to fetch the goods, Daphne asked about the situation and felt relieved when she found out the two sides were still cool with each other.
"He's the Laird I've told you about," Benjamin introduced him once he was sure she was okay. "He's nailed over 350 missions without a single fail."
"Yeah, I figured." Daphne nodded.
Even though they'd been in competitions together, they never saw each other's faces while navigating the jungle.
After it ended, she skipped the award ceremony and didn't see him eventually.
"Don't sweat it; it's all good." Benjamin knew Laird's character and understood that besides pranks, he also had serious stuff going on. "Next time you run into this kind of nonsense, just beat 'em up. I'll deal with the fallout."
"Got it." Daphne agreed.
The moment he got the photo, he knew Daphne had been taken by Laird's crew.
The photo had their base's logo, so it was probably snapped by Laird's guys, not Laird himself.
While they were chatting, Laird came back with a stack of documents.
He was grumbling the whole time, blaming both Benjamin and Daphne.
"Knowing it was a joke, you still brought a sniper." This was what bugged Laird the most. "What if the gun accidentally went off? My life's kinda valuable, you know."
"If it accidentally went off, I'd just take your head and cash in the reward."
"Son of a—!"
The two bickered like usual.
Laird always got super ticked off when Benjamin talked.
"Enough of this." Benjamin just wanted to hang with Daphne and didn't want to waste time with these clowns. "You went through all this trouble; you must have something serious."
"Check it out." Laird handed over the documents. "The Global Special Organization Tournament is kicking off again. This time, every country’s sending their top dogs. The country that wins gets mad respect and some sweet rewards."
"Not my problem." Benjamin glanced at it and tossed it aside.
"Benjamin!"
"I've retired."
"I know." Laird really wanted him to join. "But your crew said they’re cool with it. As long as you’re down, you can jump in anytime."
"I'm not doing it."
"Your country’s been winning for years. Aren't you worried about getting clowned if you lose?"
"We won't lose," Benjamin said with total confidence, trusting his team. "The guy I trained can take you all down."
