Chapter 558 Your Car is Broken, Right

Jesse paused, his eyes landing on Elara.

He'd only ever heard Elara mention her family was in business, but he'd never dug for details.

Judging by her studying abroad and her style back in school, he figured her family had some money.

"Why do you talk so much?" Elara cut in, worried Willie might spill too much.

"Her family owns a publicly traded company," Willie blurted out, watching Jesse's face for a reaction. "The Gonzalez Group is hers."

Elara felt a wave of panic. "Jesse, don't listen to him."

She was terrified Jesse would be disappointed in her.

She never meant to deceive him, but she had.

"The Gonzalez Group is your family's?" Jesse was a bit taken aback.

Elara's eyes showed her nerves, and she stammered, "I can explain."

"Explain what?" Jesse asked.

"The job I told you about before was fake. After I came back, I started working at my family's company," Elara decided to come clean. She didn't want him thinking she had ulterior motives. "The reason I resigned is because..."

Because of what? Elara was scrambling; she hadn't thought of an excuse.

"No need to explain, I get it," Jesse's calm eyes stayed steady, giving off a reassuring vibe.

Elara was stunned. "What?"

"Is your dad really the CEO of the Gonzalez Group?" Jesse asked.

Elara nodded, "Yes."

"I see," Jesse had already made up his mind.

Elara was confused. What did he see?

Jesse took Elara's hand and headed towards the car, chatting as they walked. "I'll treat them to dinner later. Where do you want to eat?"

"What?" Elara felt like she was dreaming.

Willie and the others were just as baffled.

Willie stared at Jesse's back and said slowly, "Do you think Harry is someone you can just brush off with any random small place?"

"Fresh Harvest Eatery is indeed a small place," Jesse stopped and replied.

Everyone was stunned.

Willie paused. "Where did he just say?"

"Fresh Harvest Eatery."

"A place that only serves three tables a day."

"I heard a lot of people want to eat there, but not everyone can get a reservation."

"People who can eat there are not ordinary."

Everyone was buzzing about this place.

They instinctively asked Willie, "Willie, who exactly is this Jesse?"

"I don't know," Willie muttered, suddenly feeling uneasy. "He's probably just trying to sound cool. Fresh Harvest Eatery is way out of his league."

Jesse didn't care about their chatter and got into the car with Elara.

Elara bit her lip. "Jesse."

Jesse asked, "What's up?"

"I told my dad to go back," Elara had just taken Harry off the blacklist and sent him a message, "You don't need to treat them to dinner."

"It's better to treat them," Jesse explained, "Since you're living with me, they might be worried. Meeting me and knowing they can trust me will make them feel better about you staying with me."

Elara worried that meeting might cause some trouble.

"No need," Elara refused again.

"Are you sure?" Jesse didn't like to push people.

"Yeah." Elara nodded, feeling a bit conflicted. "You're not marrying me. If you formally treat them to dinner, it wouldn't be appropriate."

Jesse thought for a moment. "Okay, I'll listen to you."

Elara thought, 'Doesn't he even want to argue about not marrying me?'

"The clothes I bought while shopping are still in that car over there," Elara said as Jesse started the car, biting her lip. "That car is rented."

"Where did you rent it? I'll have someone take care of it," Jesse asked.

Seeing Elara's silence, Jesse pressed further, "What's wrong?"

"I already sent a message for someone to handle it," Elara made up an excuse. "Just help me get my things out, you don't need to worry about the rest."

"Okay," Jesse agreed and immediately went to get her things from the car.

When he saw the inside of the car, his eyebrows raised a bit; this car didn't look rented.

"What are you looking at? I'll compensate Elara for the car," Willie said directly, still trying to figure out Jesse's deal.

Jesse took out the things. "Is this her car?"

"Obviously," Willie snapped, his attitude still sour.

This car was the one she often drove. Willie didn't know what Ralph was thinking, coming to bully Elara!

Jesse just nodded and walked away with the things.

After Elara got into Jesse's car and they left the parking lot, she felt a bit uneasy.

For ten minutes, neither of them spoke.

"There are three cars in the parking lot under my building," Jesse finally said, realizing he had overlooked the car issue. "You can choose one. If you don't like any, I'll take you to buy one."

Elara couldn't keep up with his thoughts. "What do you mean?"

"Your car is broken, right? Without a car, it will be inconvenient to go out during this time," Jesse explained. "And you don't want me to follow you all the time."

Elara replied, "Okay."

Jesse glanced at her. "Not going to argue that the car isn't yours?"

Elara suddenly realized it. "You were trying to get me to admit it!"

"Why don't you want me to know that car is yours?" Jesse was genuinely puzzled.

Elara's mood dropped again, and she bit her lip, not speaking. You became more cautious when you cared about someone, afraid to say or do the wrong thing, and that's how she felt now. She was afraid Jesse would overthink, doubt her motives, or think she was scheming.

"Why aren't you talking?" Jesse was a bit confused, wondering if he had said something wrong.

"Aren't you upset that I kept this from you?" Elara decided to come clean bit by bit, testing his attitude first. "Normally, people would suspect my motives if they knew I left my family's company to find a job."

Like having stolen company secrets or something else.

Jesse's thinking was clearly different, and he explained seriously, "You just came back not long ago. If you were parachuted into a position in the company, some people might be unhappy. With your personality, it's normal to resign and leave to find another job."

Elara was stunned; she hadn't thought of that at all. "Is that really what you think?"

"Yes," Jesse's response was calm and honest.

Elara's lips pressed into a line; she really wanted to laugh but had to hold it in.

How could there be someone as adorable as Jesse in the world, automatically finding an excuse for her?
