Chapter 452 Your Words Really Hurt Me
Gavin was scratching his head, totally baffled.
What kinda surprise needed all this drama? And she even said she'd help him with the Murphy Group's business.
Seeing him staring, Daphne asked, "So, you in or what?"
"Hold up, spill the beans on this surprise first," Gavin said, all cautious. "What if your surprise ends up freaking Benjamin out?"
"It won't."
"Just tell me first." Gavin wasn't backing down.
Daphne went quiet, her usually chill eyes showing something else.
"Tell me first, then I'll decide if I'm in," Gavin pushed.
If it was anything else, he'd have jumped in without a second thought. But this? This was different. Daphne offering such a deal meant it was big.
"Fine, I'll tell you." Daphne knew Gavin well enough to know he'd flip when he found out. "But you gotta promise, no blabbing. Just you and me."
"Deal," Gavin agreed, no hesitation.
Daphne then dropped the bomb, "I'm gonna propose to Benjamin."
Gavin's face was a mix of confusion and disbelief. "Propose to him?"
"Yup."
"But you're a girl; why are you the one making the move?" Gavin blurted out. "That's Benjamin's gig; you shouldn't stress about it."
"No rule says only guys can propose." Daphne wanted to show her love and commitment. "I want him to know he's in my future plans."
Gavin was speechless. What kinda twist was this?
Benjamin was out there picking an engagement ring, and Daphne was planning to pop the question. Could they be more in sync?
"You don't need to propose; he'll get that he's in your future from the little things," Gavin tried to talk her out of it, still thinking proposing was a guy's job.
Proposing meant he wanted to spend his life with her, build a family, protect her, and love her.
"I've made up my mind," Daphne said firmly, her eyes dead serious. "You just need to cover for me."
"You sure?"
"Yep."
"No matter what I say, you won't change your mind?"
"I won't."
"Alright." Gavin knew Daphne too well; once she decided, no one could sway her. "I'll keep tabs on Benjamin, but you gotta keep me in the loop on your plans every day."
"Deal." Daphne agreed and then laid out her schedule for the next two days.
When Gavin found out Daphne had also ordered an engagement ring, he was shook. Were these two synced up or what? Even the rings were from the same city.
"Daphne." Gavin suddenly had a lightbulb moment.
Daphne had just sent her schedule to Gavin when she looked up. "What's up?"
"Have you thought about this?"
"Thought about what?"
"What if Benjamin's planning to propose to you too?"
"One of us will pop the question first." Daphne shrugged, not sweating it. Benjamin had hinted at it before, "We won't do it on the same day."
"What if he got a ring too?" Gavin finally asked the burning question. "Which ring are you gonna wear, yours or his?"
"I'll rock his ring, and he'll wear mine." Daphne had it all figured out.
Solid answer, no doubt.
"When you planning to drop the big question?" Gavin wanted to get a feel for Benjamin's timeline. "Gonna do it as soon as you get the ring, or still undecided?"
"By the end of May, latest." Daphne laid it out.
Gavin nodded. It was May 1st, so they had a whole month.
If Benjamin moved fast, he could beat her to it.
"Let me know when you set the date." Gavin planned to give Benjamin a heads-up. "I'll help you get ready."
"Nope," Daphne shot him down.
Gavin was puzzled. "Why not?"
"I know what you're up to." Daphne saw right through him. "I won't let you tip off Benjamin."
"Am I that predictable?"
"Yep."
"That stings, you know."
"No," Daphne said seriously. "You'd just feel guilty if I called you out."
She nailed it.
Even though she was right, Gavin had to play along. "If I was gonna tell Benjamin, I'd have already spilled about your ring."
"You wouldn't break a promise." Daphne knew him too well.
Gavin might seem flaky, but he was solid when it came to his word. Once he promised, he stuck to it.
"Go crash early." Daphne was done talking. "I'm hitting the sack."
After saying goodnight, Gavin bounced.
Back in his room, his mind was buzzing with all this, torn between testing Benjamin and not. Finally, he decided to just crash.
Over the next two days, Gavin nailed everything Daphne asked him to do.
So much so that Benjamin felt like he had eyes on him whenever he stepped out. When he got back to the hotel, he had someone look into it.
Benjamin had the organization's green light, and hardly anyone had seen his full face. He shouldn't have been tailed.
More importantly, those shady characters shouldn't be in this chill, romantic city.
On the third day, they cracked it.
Benjamin got a call from his guy. "Mr. Reynolds, you were right. Someone's been tailing you the past couple of days."
"Who?"
"People from the Murphy Group, Gavin's crew."
Benjamin paused. Gavin?
"Should we nab them?" the guy asked.
"No need."
"There's more."
"Spill it."
"Ms. Murphy's here too." The voice on the other end was clear and respectful. "We found out Gavin met with Ms. Murphy three nights ago."
