Chapter 69 Charles Investigates Kayla
Under normal circumstances, Daphne would have already been awake.
But now, in a relaxed state and exhausted, she continued to sleep soundly.
At the door.
Charles used Daphne's fingerprint to unlock it.
After changing shoes, he carried her upstairs, unsure of her room, he had to check each one.
When he opened the second room and saw Daphne's belongings, he knew he had found the right one.
He removed her shoes and gently placed her on the bed. Just as he was about to help her out of her clothes and into pajamas, Daphne suddenly woke with a start.
She instinctively grabbed the hand at her collar.
"It's me," Charles lowered his voice.
Daphne stared at him for a moment, as if to confirm she knew the person, then closed her eyes and drifted back to sleep.
Her reaction made Charles furrow his brow unconsciously.
Had Daphne... experienced something in the past?
Her state just now didn't seem like she was fully awake, rather it was a subconscious reaction of her body, ensuring she was in a safe environment before relaxing and continuing to sleep.
After he changed her into pajamas, he sat beside her bed for a long time, realizing how little he truly knew about her.
Her past, her experiences.
He knew nothing.
At that moment, his phone vibrated.
It was a message from Mark, with just four words: "Boss, are you there?"
Charles tucked Daphne in and then took his phone out of the room.
Not wanting to disturb her sleep, he went straight to the downstairs living room.
He turned on the light and dialed Mark through WhatsApp.
Mark perked up when he saw the call.
The boss was still awake!
"Boss," he answered decisively, his heart fluttering with a bit of trepidation.
"What's up," Charles's lips barely moved.
"I've finished investigating Miss Baker's terminal illness," Mark was truly dedicated, which explained why he occasionally got away with being bold in front of Charles,"The results are a bit different from what you knew before."
Charles stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing into the night,"Go on."
"Miss Baker has records of hospitalization for stomach cancer abroad, as well as treatment records," Mark knew how to present information to make it more acceptable to the boss,"But there are no outpatient records in the country."
Charles's hand holding the phone paused, quickly realizing,"You mean, Kayla's terminal illness is fake."
"Outpatient records are kept for two years," Mark didn't want to get in trouble, so he found an excuse,"Miss Baker might have done the checkup a long time ago."
Charles didn't speak further; he hung up the phone.
Half a year ago, when Kayla called him, she said she got the report the day before they broke up, which stated she had a terminal illness, and she showed him the records of her treatment abroad.
Since she received the report the day before they broke up, it meant the examination was done a few days before the report.
Although hospital outpatient records are only kept for two years, many hospitals don't clear records right after two years.
There is usually an appropriate extension.
Was Kayla... deceiving him?
Almost instantly, Charles dismissed the thought.
Why would she deceive him? There was no reason for her to lie.
If it was just to be with him, she didn't need to break up with him in the first place.
For a moment.
Charles was caught in a conflict.
He opened Mark's WhatsApp and sent a message:"Are you sure there's no mistake in your investigation?"
"Sure," Mark was reliable,"To avoid any errors during the investigation, I had it checked three times, and the results were the same each time."
Charles stroked his phone.
He quickly had an idea in mind; he trusted Mark's words, but he wouldn't easily doubt Kayla's.
When he learned from Rex that Kayla hadn't slept yet, Charles made a call to her.
When Kayla received his call, her voice came through with grievance and a sob, "Charles..."
"Why are you still awake?" Charles's intelligence was on point.
"I'm afraid you'll blame me," Kayla brought up the matter proactively,"I don't know why I became like that, I really didn't mean to slander Miss Murphy and your brother."
"It's in the past," Charles's lips barely moved,"After you recover this time, I'll take you for a full body checkup."
Kayla stiffened.
Thinking of the lie she told him, she became nervous,"No need, I've already done it before, I'm healthy."
"A miscarriage does a lot of damage to the body," Charles's eyes showed some emotion as he spoke,"I'll worry less if you get checked."
"Okay," Kayla agreed.
This probe yielded no results.
Charles told her to go to sleep and hung up, then lay down on the sofa to sleep.
The next morning.
When Daphne woke up and found herself in her room, she was momentarily confused, her memory only reaching back to sitting in Charles's passenger seat, feeling very sleepy, and leaning back to sleep.
Then, she woke up.
She shook off the thoughts in her head, planning to put on her shoes and go to bed, only to realize she was wearing pajamas.
She didn't ponder any further, understanding that Charles had done it.
Before that call from Kayla, he had taken care of her many times like this, whether going out shopping or accompanying him to dinners, if it was too late, he would always carry her back.
He would remove her makeup, change her clothes, and cover her with a blanket.
She was only responsible for sleeping.
It seems she was really too tired yesterday, so much so that she didn't wake up even when this man was changing her clothes.
After taking a shower and changing into fresh clothes, she went downstairs in slippers, pausing when she saw the person sleeping on the sofa at the corner.
Had this person... slept on the sofa all night?
She went downstairs in her light-colored home clothes, approached the sofa, and nudged his leg that was hanging off the sofa,"Wake up."
Charles was nudged awake.
When he opened his eyes and saw the person standing in front of him, his mind was momentarily foggy.
"You should leave," Daphne said, her shoulder-length hair adding a touch of coolness to her demeanor.
"Aren't you being a bit heartless?" Charles, not fully awake, rubbed his brow and sat up on the sofa, feeling a headache coming on,"If it weren't for me carrying you back last night, you'd still be sleeping in the car."
"Am I supposed to thank you?" Daphne's tone was anything but pleasant.
She wasn't the type to forget past grievances just because of a single gentle act.
Charles pinched the bridge of his nose.
Why was this woman so explosive first thing in the morning? Had he offended her in some way?
Daphne didn't bother with him, instead, she called to order breakfast.
Just for one.
There were many things she was good at, but cooking was not one of them; she found it bothersome, so she usually ordered food, only occasionally cooking something simple to get by.
