Chapter 427 Do You Prefer Boys or Girls?
"Just want to see if you got rusty after slacking off for a bit," Benjamin said, trying to sound all serious but still keeping it chill. "Looks like you're still sharp."
Daphne was still kinda out of it.
The shadow she saw earlier had freaked her out, and now, half-awake, she was struggling to make sense of his words.
They hadn't had any missions in the last two years, so what was with this sudden test?
"Go back to sleep. I'm heading out," Benjamin said, ready to bounce.
"Wait," Daphne stopped him.
Benjamin paused, still casual and not a hint of guilt. "What's up?"
"Did you really just come to test my alertness?" Daphne asked, skeptical.
"Yeah," Benjamin replied.
"No other reason?" Daphne pressed.
"Nope," Benjamin denied.
"If you did, our marriage would fail," Daphne said, her mind clearing up as they talked.
Daphne waited silently for his answer.
"Not that," Benjamin said, trying to think of a way to dodge. "Pick something else."
With that, Daphne got it. Benjamin was definitely up to something!
Back in the organization, Benjamin had pulled these late-night alertness tests a bunch of times. They usually saw through it.
But now, with no missions and no training alerts, there was no reason for him to test her.
Most importantly, she was his girlfriend now. No way he'd mix business with personal time like this.
"Why that look?" Benjamin asked, raising an eyebrow.
"You're not being honest," Daphne said, trying to figure him out. "You're lying to me."
Their eyes locked—one calm, the other stubbornly seeking answers.
After about thirty seconds, Daphne asked again, "Why did you come to my room so late?"
"Do I have to say?" Benjamin had already cooked up a plan.
Daphne nodded. "Yeah, you do."
"I want to see if you still have insomnia," Benjamin said, nailing his performance.
Daphne didn't expect that and was momentarily speechless.
Benjamin added, rubbing her head, "I just want to check on you and leave. Didn't mean to wake you."
"I don't have insomnia anymore," Daphne said, showing him the health bracelet she wore at night. "This bracelet you got me tracks everything pretty well."
"Yeah," Benjamin responded.
Daphne didn't think much more of it.
After a few more words, Benjamin let her sleep, turned off the lights, and closed the door as he left. Only then did he let out a sigh of relief.
Benjamin could be a seriously dangerous enemy.
He was smart, calm, and a top-notch actor. If he wanted to lie, almost no one could see through it. Such a person, once an enemy, could deceive people into despair.
But if he loved someone, they would be very happy, as he would provide endless surprises.
Even if the surprise was discovered midway, he could perfectly cover it up.
Benjamin sat down and opened a Facebook contact, sending over the measurements of Daphne's ring finger and middle finger, along with two exquisitely designed ring sketches that clearly showed the amount of thought and effort that had gone into them.
After sending the message, he asked, [How long to custom-make the engagement ring?]
[At least three months,] came the quick reply.
Benjamin responded, [Alright.]
Three months was plenty of time to plan the perfect proposal.
As soon as Daphne hinted at wanting to marry him, he'd be ready to pop the question.
After handling that, he jumped into the group chat without Daphne and sent, [Guys, help me figure out when Daphne wants to get married.]
Replies came in fast.
Emma: [You can propose anytime.]
Benjamin: [What do you mean?]
Emma didn't hesitate to spill some tea, but not all of it. [Zoey and I asked her before. She said she's ready whenever you are.]
Benjamin's dark eyes paused as he read this.
He quickly replied, [Are you sure you didn't misunderstand her?]
Emma: [Absolutely sure.]
Seeing this, Benjamin rubbed his phone, deep in thought.
If Daphne was really down to get married, he'd have to wait at least three months to propose.
Would three months be too long?
For a moment, he wanted to rush the ring's progress.
But he held back. Rushed work wouldn't be as perfect. He didn't want any flaws or regrets in his proposal.
Emma: [When do you plan to propose?]
Benjamin: [In three months. The ring will take at least that long.]
Emma's eyes twinkled as she immediately messaged Daphne: [How are your preparations for proposing to Benjamin and getting the ring going?]
Since both wanted to propose, they could coordinate for double the surprise.
After messaging Daphne, Emma replied in the group chat: [Take your time planning the proposal. Meanwhile, Zoey and I will find out what kind of proposal scene she likes.]
Benjamin replied, [Okay.]
After the chat, he put down his phone and went to bed.
Maybe because of the recent topic, Benjamin had a dream after falling asleep.
He dreamed of proposing to Daphne, having a grand wedding, and even a cute kid together.
That night, he was wrapped in sweetness.
So much so that during breakfast the next morning, he asked, "Do you prefer boys or girls?"
"Boys or girls?" Daphne hesitated, guessing, "Are you talking about kids?"
"Yeah."
"Either is fine," Daphne replied.
She wasn't picky. Boy or girl, she'd love them the same.
"Last night, I dreamed we had a child," Benjamin said, still feeling the sweetness of the dream. "Very cute and well-behaved."
"Do you like kids?" Daphne asked.
"Only if they're with you," Benjamin said honestly.
He'd never been particularly interested in children.
But thinking of a child as the product of his and Daphne's love, he couldn't help but like the idea.
Daphne glanced at him and said seriously, "If you really want a child, we need to prepare in advance. One of the preparations is not staying up late."
Then their thoughts drifted back to the previous night.
