Chapter 378 You Have Someone Protecting You

"Didn't Kevin mention several times that I've been single for years? Did you forget?" Benjamin was surprised she thought otherwise since they'd talked about it before.

He assumed everyone knew he’d never been in a relationship, but he forgot Daphne might have temporarily forgotten because of past issues.

Daphne paused, unsure how to respond.

She did remember. Emma and Zoey had speculated whether Benjamin was single because he rejected everyone or because he was too busy with work.

She'd overheard them, but when Benjamin mentioned "first love," she instinctively thought the worst and ignored the fact he’d never dated.

Realizing this, Daphne felt her anger was misplaced. She thought about apologizing.

But Benjamin spoke first, gently rubbing her head. "None of what you're worried about will happen. I don't have an ex, and even if I did, I'd still stand by you."

"What if she's right and I'm wrong?" Daphne asked.

"Then I'd stand by you even more to give you confidence," Benjamin said, smiling warmly. "I want people to know you have someone protecting you."

Daphne usually found sweet talk insincere, but this time it warmed her heart.

She'd always believed security came from within, but now she saw it could also come from a partner.

"I'm sorry," Daphne said. Benjamin had been honest with her, so she should be honest too. "I misjudged you."

"It was my fault for not considering your feelings. No need to apologize," Benjamin said, rubbing her head gently. "Besides, I want to hear you say 'I love you.'"

With the misunderstanding cleared up, Daphne felt a bit embarrassed. Benjamin was such a good person; how could she have doubted him?

"Help me put this on," Benjamin said, pulling her to the sofa.

Daphne took off his old watch and put on the new one she’d bought. It fit perfectly.

Seeing her act so naturally, Benjamin rubbed the old watch and said, "Want to know the story behind this watch?"

Daphne thought, 'A story? It's just a watch.'

"Never mind," Benjamin said, seeing her confusion. He put the old watch away carefully.

Daphne was puzzled but didn't overthink it, guessing it might be a gift from his parents or his first purchase.

After that, Daphne brought her work to Benjamin's place, and they worked together in the study.

Daphne handled HorizonTech Group matters, while Benjamin familiarized himself with the Reynolds Group's departments and information.

Although Benjamin didn't plan to take over the family business right now, he needed to be familiar with it. If Henry ever got fed up and quit, Benjamin would have to step in; he couldn't just ignore it.

At 5:30 PM, Benjamin went to cook and asked Daphne to check if Charles would be back for dinner.

Daphne called, but no one answered, so she called Mark.

"Mr. Lancelot won't be back for dinner, and he won't be staying tonight," Mark explained, sounding a bit worried.

Daphne responded with a hum and asked, "What's he busy with?"

Mark hesitated. "Well..."

"What?" Daphne pressed.

"It's classified. Mr. Lancelot specifically instructed me not to tell you," Mark said, half-truthfully. "But don't worry, he's fine."

"Let me know if anything comes up," Daphne said, not pushing further.

She always felt relaxed when Charles was with Mark, who was reliable and meticulous.

After hanging up, Daphne told Benjamin that Charles wouldn't be back for dinner.

Benjamin then only made enough for the two of them.

Watching Benjamin busy in the kitchen, Daphne suggested, "Benjamin, why don't we hire a cook? That way, you can focus on your work without worrying about meals."

"No need," Benjamin refused. "I like cooking for you."

Daphne didn't argue. She used to spend most of her time at the company, and her meals were usually ordered by Jesse, so she never thought about hiring a cook.

Back then, Jasmine was still around, and Daphne would go back almost every weekend.

By 6:30 PM, dinner was ready. Daphne was about to get the utensils when her phone vibrated.

Seeing it was a call from Lydia, she answered on speaker while getting the utensils. "Hello."

"Daphne, you home?" Lydia's voice came through.

Daphne thought she heard an echo but didn't think much of it. "I'm home, what's up?"

"I'm outside your door, can you let me in?" Lydia said.

In the past, Lydia would have entered with the code, but after Christmas, Alexander specifically instructed her to knock when visiting Daphne's place, not to go in directly.

Lydia was smart; she knew what Alexander meant. If Benjamin and Daphne were discussing something, it wouldn't be good to interrupt.

Daphne was momentarily stunned.

Benjamin brought the food to the table and, seeing her unusual expression, asked, "What's wrong?"

Benjamin's voice! Lydia and Gavin exchanged glances, then quickly turned to knock on Benjamin's door, hanging up in the process.

Benjamin rubbed Daphne's head and went to open the door, his long legs striding gracefully.

As soon as the door opened, Lydia poked her head in. Seeing Daphne at the dining table, she smiled.

"Benjamin, could you tell Daphne to come over to our place after dinner?" Lydia didn't want to interrupt their time together. "We'll head over first."

Benjamin's gaze shifted past her to Gavin standing behind.

He opened the door wider and stepped aside to let them in. "Come in and eat, we can talk while eating."

Lydia waved her hand in refusal. "No need!"

"Sorry to intrude," Gavin said, stepping inside.
