Chapter 289 Charles's Situation

Daphne could understand the words, but together, they felt off.

Pointing to the first line, she asked, "Is he in trouble?"

"Nothing serious. He's alive and kicking," Brian shrugged. "He can eat and drink; there are just a few minor issues I haven't sorted out."

Daphne felt relieved hearing that.

She didn't think much of it, assuming Charles knew about Brian's private contact with her.

It didn't matter; once she confirmed Charles was fine, she called Hayden to pick him up. As for the losses Brian mentioned, they were minor issues.

"Alright." She took his pen, ready to sign.

Just as she was about to sign, Daphne paused.

Brian got anxious, fearing she wouldn't take Charles away. Trying to stay calm, he asked, "What's wrong?"

"Are you hiding something from me?" Daphne looked up at him.

Charles had made a deal with Brian to save her. Given Brian's character, it was unlikely he'd let her take Charles away before achieving his goal. This was suspicious.

Brian looked puzzled, acting convincingly. "What do you mean?"

Daphne kept staring at him.

Brian maintained his calm demeanor, but his hands were slightly sweaty, feeling uneasy.

"Oh, right." Brian quickly changed the subject. "Although Charles is fine now, he still needs to come back for a check-up once a month."

"Okay." Daphne agreed.

Seeing no signs of anything unusual, Daphne signed the document.

The worst-case scenario was that Charles's condition was still bad, and Brian couldn't treat him. If that were the case, it would be normal for Brian to insist she take him away after seeing him.

The contract was in duplicate.

After handing Daphne her copy, Brian felt relieved. He could finally get rid of Charles!

"Ms. Murphy, please follow me." Brian was now very enthusiastic.

Daphne followed him, but this time, they went in the opposite direction of the medical room.

They passed through four password-protected doors. After opening the fourth door, Brian, wearing a white coat, walked in and said in a coaxing tone, "Charles, your sister is here to take you home."

Charles? Sister?

Daphne, feeling confused, walked into the room where Charles was staying.

When she entered, she saw Charles sitting in a chair reading a book. He was wearing a hospital gown, and his complexion was already rosy.

Sensing someone entering, he looked towards the door, and their eyes met.

Daphne frowned. Charles's eyes and expression were...

"Sister?" Charles murmured, his confused eyes showing a hint of curiosity.

Charles didn't know why, but even though he didn't like interacting with people, not even Brian, who was treating him, he felt a strong sense of familiarity when he saw Daphne, as if he had known her for a long time.

Daphne was stunned. Almost instantly, she concluded from Charles's series of reactions that he had lost his memory.

"That's right; she is your sister." Brian walked over, smiling gently. "You can go home with her now."

Charles looked at Daphne, his black eyes filled with her image.

The next moment, he stood up, took a couple of steps forward, and asked hesitantly, "Are you really my sister?"

"I..." Daphne started to speak.

"She is your sister," Brian cut in, then told him, "Go pack your things. I need to talk to your sister."

He motioned for Daphne to follow him out.

In the hallway, Daphne's mind was racing.

She had considered all the symptoms Richard had mentioned before, but she hadn't thought of this.

"What exactly is going on?" she asked Brian.

"He’s lost all his memories, and his intelligence is about that of a five-year-old," Brian explained, not holding back. "Although it's bad, compared to other situations, it's much better."

Most importantly, even with the mind of a five-year-old, Charles was still very smart.

This was also why Brian wanted to send Charles away. If he stayed any longer, he’d dismantle all of Brian's equipment!

"You should be grateful he's not completely incapacitated," Brian added.

Daphne felt a mix of emotions. "Can he get better?"

"He can," Brian assured, glancing inside. "But I can't say exactly when he will fully recover. After taking him home, it's best not to let him get agitated."

"Shouldn't I take him to familiar places to stimulate his memory?" Daphne asked.

"Not for now," Brian said. "His mind is that of a child now. If he gets agitated, it could lead to other problems. The more stable and warm his life is, the better for his recovery."

"Okay," Daphne responded faintly.

Brian pursed his lips. After a moment, he said something that seemed inappropriate, "I know what happened between you two, but I hope you can temporarily put it aside and take good care of him. After he recovers, you can go your separate ways."

Daphne thought of the past and stared at him.

Brian felt a bit uneasy. "What's wrong?"

"Didn't he want to be strangers with me, not interfering with each other?" Daphne brought up the matter again. "If that's the case, won't taking him with me agitate him?"

"This is a long story," Brian said calmly. Anyway, Daphne had signed the document, and Charles's problem was mostly solved. "But rest assured, since I asked you to take him home, it means it's beneficial for his recovery."

Daphne wouldn't let Brian off the hook so easily. "Make a long story short."

"This matter doesn't affect you much," Brian said in advance. "Your goal is to go your separate ways. He will fulfill his promise after he recovers. As for the rest, knowing too much will only add to your psychological burden, which is unnecessary."

"Whether it's necessary, only I can decide," Daphne said calmly.

Perhaps it was her nature; she wanted to sort out any questionable issues, but she wouldn't pursue matters without any doubts.

The words Charles had Brian convey were too strange. If she didn't resolve this doubt, it would occasionally come to mind in the future.

Although it was not a big deal, it would always bother her.

"Alright," Brian finally relented. "I can tell you this, but if Charles comes after me when he recovers, you have to cover for me."
