Chapter 294 Pain Is Nothing to Be Ashamed Of
"What?" Daphne thought she misheard.
"When you were about to leave, you held my hand and showed concern for me," Charles clarified, looking a bit shy.
Daphne was taken aback. Just asking a question made him so happy?
Charles had been watching Daphne. When she didn't respond, he softly called out, "Daphne."
"Yeah?" she replied.
"I've never seen you smile," Charles said.
"I don't like to smile," Daphne answered.
"No one dislikes smiling," Charles said confidently. "Unless they're unhappy or have nothing to be happy about."
Daphne wondered what was going on in his head. "Where did you get that nonsense?"
"It's not nonsense," Charles said in a childlike tone. "I want to make you happy."
Daphne fell silent. Forget it, and she wouldn't argue with him; his mind was just like a child's.
She took Charles to the hospital. When the doctor used a sterile needle to pierce the large blister and disinfect it, Charles's whole face scrunched up.
Daphne wondered, 'Isn't Charles not afraid of pain?'
At this moment, Daphne overlooked the fact that Charles's mind was only five years old. Looking at him, she instinctively thought he was an adult.
If Charles were truly a child at this moment, Daphne would have already hugged and comforted him. But appearances could really create a lot of subconscious thoughts.
"Does it hurt?" the doctor asked.
Charles was about to nod but saw Daphne looking at him and immediately shook his head obediently. "No, it doesn't hurt."
"There's nothing shameful about pain," the doctor said, piercing another blister and noticing how tense Charles became. He teased, "If you say it hurts, maybe your girlfriend will care for you and blow on it."
"Girlfriend?" Charles was unfamiliar with the term.
Sitting nearby, Daphne explained, "I'm his sister."
The doctor gave them a strange look. Sister? Such a young sister?
After looking at them a few more times, he seemed to understand something and said meaningfully, "Can't a sister be pampered?"
In the doctor's eyes, these two, who looked like a perfect couple, were definitely in a relationship.
Sister? It must be a case where the boyfriend made the girlfriend angry, and she refused to acknowledge him. He knew this scenario all too well!
Charles blinked. Could he?
"When I pierce this blister later, remember to look at her pitifully and say it hurts," the doctor whispered, looking amused. "No matter what you did to make her angry, she'll surely forgive you."
With that face, if he squeezed out a few tears, even the angriest person would soften. Even as a man, the doctor felt a pang of sympathy.
Charles, with a child's mind, believed whatever he was told. "Really?"
"Why don't you try?" the doctor suggested, raising an eyebrow.
Charles's eyes shifted.
The doctor pierced the blister. Charles didn't hold back the pain this time. As the pain hit, he hissed, his face scrunching up.
Daphne glanced at him. "Does it hurt a lot?"
"It hurts," Charles said, tears welling up in his eyes, looking pitiful.
Daphne's heart felt a sudden jolt.
She had to admit that Charles's face was extremely attractive. She saw his cold and indifferent demeanor. Seeing him now looking pitiful and seeking comfort made her want to console him and make him happy.
The doctor noticed Daphne's expression and added a little more force while disinfecting.
Charles winced. "Ouch!"
"Just bear with it a little longer," Daphne said, rubbing his head like she would comfort any other child.
Charles nodded obediently. "Okay."
The doctor felt something was off. Normally, shouldn't she blow on it or complain that he couldn't handle a little pain? How did it turn into an adult comforting a child with "Just bear with it a little longer"?
Unable to figure it out, he didn't dwell on it. After finishing up, he prescribed some medication. "The remaining small blisters don't need any treatment. Just let them heal on their own. Remember to apply this ointment."
"Thanks, doc." Daphne took the medication.
As they left the hospital, Charles followed obediently.
In the car, wanting to understand Daphne better, he tentatively asked, "Daphne, do you dislike boys who say it hurts?"
Daphne was a bit confused and didn't quite hear him.
"I'll be a man in the future," Charles added.
Daphne didn't think much of it and focused on driving. "Okay."
Charles felt relieved. Daphne indeed didn't like boys who said it hurt.
When they arrived at the apartment complex, Daphne took Charles upstairs. The bodyguards had already delivered his clothes and other personal items to her place.
She skillfully opened the door and went inside.
Before she could change her shoes, a figure rushed over and hugged her.
"Daphne!" Lydia always missed Daphne a lot if she hadn't seen her for a while.
Daphne was slightly surprised. "Why are you here?"
"I'm on break and came to hang out with you," Lydia said, not noticing Charles at the door. She continued, "Didn't you see the message I sent you?"
Daphne wondered if she'd get scolded for not seeing it.
Lydia was well aware that Daphne didn't like to use her phone much. "I knew you didn't see it!"
"I was busy and didn't notice," Daphne promised. "I'll definitely check next time."
"Since you're my sister, I'll reluctantly forgive you," Lydia said, lively and cute, "By the way, are those suitcases in the living room yours? They don't seem to match your usual style."
Although they were minimalist, most of Daphne's things were silver or white.
However, the two suitcases in the living room were black.
Could it be? Lydia seemed to have discovered something interesting.
Lydia asked, "Are they Benjamin's from next door?"
"No," Daphne said, changing her shoes and moving further inside, revealing Charles behind her, "They're his."
Before she could ask who it was, Lydia saw Charles behind Daphne.
Lydia froze, full of questions. Charles?
Lydia didn't care about manners and pulled Daphne into the bedroom, closing the door before starting her complaints. "Why did you bring him into your home? Are all those suitcases his?"
Daphne nodded. "Yes."
Lydia asked, "He's staying here?"
Daphne said, "Yes."
"Daphne!" Lydia was a bit anxious, lowering her voice. "Are you crazy? Have you forgotten what he did to you before?"
He divorced Daphne for another woman.
Just for that, Lydia couldn't agree to Charles staying here, let alone reconciling with Daphne.
