Chapter 216 Didn't You Already Know?
Mark glanced at his expression in the rearview mirror and said, "Since you can't bear to part with Ms. Murphy, why not speak up and keep her around?"
"Do I need you to tell me?" Charles retorted.
If speaking up worked, he would have done so long ago.
Mark touched his nose and obediently drove without saying more.
"You said Jesse was working as an assistant in another company before." Charles finally focused on this matter. "How did he end up with Daphne?"
"I'm not very clear on the specifics." Mark honestly disclosed these matters. "He said his previous boss went on vacation, so now he's working part-time for Ms. Murphy."
"If it were you, would you take on a part-time job?" Charles's gaze deepened and his tone became slightly cold.
Mark glanced at his expression and honestly replied, "I wouldn't."
If Charles went on vacation, he would definitely take time off, too.
In any case, the salary would still come in, and he could choose not to work. Most importantly, Jesse wasn't short of money. Over the years, he had saved all his money, so there was no financial pressure.
"Why would Jesse take on a part-time job with Daphne then?" Charles began to doubt.
Mark was troubled, finding it difficult to answer this question.
He couldn't say that Jesse liked Daphne and wanted to take this opportunity to get closer to her.
Charles waited for Mark's answer for a long time but didn't get a response.
He furrowed his brow and said, "Speak."
"Besides liking her, what else could it be?" Mark felt apprehensive as he began to speak, "Don't you already know?"
"Not that." Charles was very calm at the moment.
If Jesse simply liked Daphne, it would be better for him to find other ways to get closer to her. Being her assistant, apart from giving work assignments, he wouldn't get to see Daphne most of the time.
Mark was taken aback.
He drove steadily and asked, "What is it then?"
"Could Jesse's previous boss be Daphne?" Charles voiced his speculation.
Mark was slightly surprised. "I had thought about that before, but it's unlikely."
Charles asked, "Why?"
"Jesse said his boss went on vacation again, but Ms. Murphy has been working recently."
"Again?" Charles seized on the keyword.
"His boss went on vacation for two years before, and he also took a two-year break, with his salary still being paid. He only returned to work recently," Mark recounted the past events.
After finishing, he added, "Mr. Lancelot, if you went on vacation for two years, would you also give me a two-year break with pay?"
"Are you still half asleep?" Charles coldly rebuked him.
Mark fell silent, knowing well what the response would be.
A kind and generous boss like Daphne was hard to come by.
"Check where Jesse used to work before." Charles became increasingly convinced that Jesse's boss might indeed be Daphne, so he instructed, "Find out."
Mark was internally resistant but could only agree, "Got it."
The car continued on its journey.
Mark dropped Charles off at home.
Meanwhile, Daphne got into Kevin's car.
Upon seeing Daphne, Kevin couldn't stop talking, "Daphne, didn't you divorce Charles? Why are you still entangled with him?"
Daphne remained silent.
"Oh, by the way, is what Evan said about that person showing up true? Daphne, why aren't you saying anything?" After talking for a while without a response from Daphne, Kevin couldn't help but ask.
"When you ask so many questions at once, which one should I answer?" Daphne felt comfortable being with Kevin.
Kevin held the steering wheel with one hand, looking a bit embarrassed.
He didn't ask about the previous matter again and switched to another topic. "By the way, do you know about Benjamin's situation?"
"What situation?" Daphne perked up at the mention of Benjamin.
She automatically recalled she called Benjamin earlier and used him as a shield.
"You really don't know?" Kevin exclaimed.
"What?" Daphne inquired.
"Nothing." Kevin stopped mid-sentence. "I didn't say anything just now."
Daphne said, "One sports car."
Kevin said, "Daphne, it's not about the car."
Daphne said, "Two limited edition cars."
Kevin said, "Evan said not to tell you for now."
Daphne said, "Three cars."
Kevin said, "Benjamin is coming back."
Daphne suddenly became alert, sitting up straight. "Where did you hear this news?"
"Evan mentioned it," Kevin said all the information, "Didn't he really tell you? I thought he was joking."
Daphne was no longer calm. She thought, 'Does Benjamin come back to settle scores with me?'
"What's wrong with you?" Kevin drove into his residential area and parked the car.
Daphne furrowed her brow slightly, feeling a bit uneasy. "Nothing."
She followed Kevin out of the car.
A while later.
She and Kevin went upstairs, had a glass of water to calm down, and then stood at the bar asking Kevin, who was sitting on the sofa, "Has Evan told you when Benjamin is coming back?"
"He hasn't said anything." Kevin shook his head.
Daphne set down her glass, pondering. "Call and ask."
Kevin felt something was off.
He sensitively said, "Daphne."
Daphne said, "What?"
"Did you do something behind Benjamin's back?" Kevin asked seriously.
"No." Daphne took another sip of water, appearing calm. "I'm just asking."
Kevin asked, "Really?"
Daphne said, "Don't you trust me?"
"I do," Kevin replied firmly.
Daphne acknowledged and asked him to message Evan.
She was afraid that if Kevin called, he might inadvertently reveal something under Evan's influence.
Kevin followed Daphne's instructions, sending a message to Evan as requested.
Kevin: [Evan, when does Benjamin come back?]
Evan: [What's up?]
Kevin: [I'm thinking of throwing a welcome party for Benjamin.]
After sending the message, there was no response.
Kevin's heart raced, and he subconsciously looked at Daphne, asking, "Why isn't Evan replying suddenly?"
Daphne shook her head. She didn't know either.
Shortly after, Evan called.
Kevin trembled in fear, feeling guilty. "It's Evan on the phone."
"Answer it." Daphne remained calm. "Stay calm, and don't give anything away."
Kevin took several deep breaths in succession, then calmed down and answered the phone on speaker, "Hello, Evan."
"Daffy asked you to ask the question just now, right?" Evan's deep and slow voice came through the phone, sounding like a question but with certainty.
Kevin instinctively looked at Daphne. 'Had he seen through it already?'
Daphne took his phone and calmly stated, "It's not easy to deceive someone you know well."
It was often said that the person who knew you best wasn't yourself but your enemy. But in her case, Evan and Benjamin knew her best.
