Chapter 311 Thank You for Dinner
"I know." Benjamin locked the door, blocking Charles. "I don't like being with you either."
"Then why are you keeping me here?" Charles whined.
Benjamin's eyes locked with Charles's, tension crackling between them.
"I know you like Daphne," Charles taunted, "But as long as I'm here, you'll never be with her."
"Mr. Lancelot," Benjamin's tone stayed calm, "You should be saying that to yourself."
In the car, Benjamin had his doubts. Charles's past behavior suggested he wouldn't cross Daphne, fearing she'd send him away. Benjamin initially thought Charles was just acting out from not seeing Daphne for a while.
Now, Benjamin was sure Charles had regained his mental faculties.
Charles didn't break eye contact and said, "My name is Charles, not Mr. Lancelot. With your bad memory, Daphne won't like you."
"Stop pretending," Benjamin shot back. "I know your mind's recovered."
Charles played dumb, thinking, 'Admitting it now means you'll tell Daphne.'
The room had surveillance. Charles had to keep pretending, even in front of Benjamin.
"Still not admitting it?" Benjamin was surprised.
"I don't understand what you're saying," Charles said, "Let me out. I just want to be with Daphne. I won't eat your food."
"Then throw up what you ate before," Benjamin replied.
Charles banged on the door, making a racket. "Let me out! I don't want to be with you!"
Benjamin blocked him. "It's late. You'll disturb the neighbors."
"Let me out," Charles insisted.
"No," Benjamin refused.
They were at a standoff. Benjamin wanted to see how long Charles would keep up the act.
Charles was making a scene to attract Daphne and ruin Benjamin's image in her eyes. Daphne could only be his.
"If you don't let me out, I'll tell Daphne you have bad intentions," Charles threatened.
Benjamin smiled, playing along. "I don't mind. It'll save me the trouble of confessing. Then you'll have to call me brother-in-law."
Charles wondered who Benjamin really was. If he didn't have to hide so much, he'd definitely have a "talk" with him.
"If you still want to pretend to be a child in front of Daphne, sit nicely on the couch," Benjamin said lazily, "Daphne doesn't like disobedient children."
Charles stayed put.
Benjamin added, "She sends away those who don't behave."
Charles shot Benjamin a dirty look but then obediently sat on the couch, already plotting his next move.
Benjamin watched, frowning. If Charles had confronted him, he could've shown Daphne the surveillance footage. But Charles's behavior was still childlike enough to keep Benjamin's suspicions just that—suspicions.
Benjamin glanced at Charles and went to make him some pasta.
Charles kept his cool, knowing any slip-up could expose him to Daphne. He had to keep up the act.
Half an hour later, Benjamin finished the pasta.
As Charles ate, Daphne arrived.
"Daphne!" Charles's eyes lit up with excitement, then dimmed as he glanced fearfully at Benjamin before continuing to eat.
His expressions were so natural that even Benjamin was surprised.
Daphne noticed, too. She wondered if something had happened between them while she was away.
"Thanks," Daphne said, now in casual sleepwear with wet hair.
Benjamin smiled. "No need to thank me."
Daphne paused, unsure how to respond.
During the meal, Charles kept glancing at Daphne, wanting to say something but staying silent.
Charles's act was aimed at making Daphne think he was scared of Benjamin. By the time he finished his pasta, Daphne noticed his fear.
"What did you two talk about?" Daphne asked.
"Not much," Benjamin said, noticing Charles's expressions but not reacting. "I told him to sit on the couch; then I made the pasta."
Daphne looked at Charles.
Charles hesitated, glanced at Benjamin with fear, and then lowered his eyes. "Yeah."
Daphne was puzzled. 'Is there a conflict between Charles and Benjamin?' she wondered.
"Benjamin, I'm done eating," Charles said politely, putting down his utensils. Thanks for dinner."
Benjamin thought, 'Charles is really good at pretending.'
Charles picked up the utensils to wash them, acting like a well-behaved child.
While he was busy, Daphne talked to Benjamin. "Benjamin, what did you two really talk about? Charles seems different."
"He is different," Benjamin hinted, still wanting more evidence before telling her. "But not in the way you think."
