Chapter 27 Many Women Call You Husband

"When I was in elementary school, someone pushed me down the stairs, and you were summoned by the principal," Lydia continued, emphasizing the seriousness of her words. "You even went with the police to review the surveillance footage..."
Lydia grew more and more serious as she spoke.
Mr. Murphy understood that if he continued pretending not to remember, he would expose his lie even more.
So he followed along with her, feigning realization. "You mean Daphne?"
"Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!" Lydia's excitement was palpable.
"You are Daphne?" Mr. Murphy inquired, confirming her identity.
Daphne didn't expect both of them to be so adept at acting.
In a calm tone, she replied, "Yes."
"Daphne, is it really you?!" Lydia was thrilled, not giving away the slightest hint throughout the entire process. "I am Lydia, the short-haired girl you saved when I fell into the pond as a child. Do you remember?"
"I remember," Daphne nodded.
How could she forget?
When this guy was sneakily catching fish, he slipped with one foot and fell into the pond.
When she pulled him out, he still had a tight grip on a lotus root.
Charles glanced at her, adding a hint of scrutiny. "Why have you never mentioned your connection to the Murphy family before?"
"Would you bring up something from ten years ago every day?" Daphne retorted in one sentence.
"......" Charles fell silent.
Lydia warmly beckoned, "Daphne, come sit over here!"
Daphne made her way over.
They chatted, reminiscing about the past.
Sometimes it was Daphne beating up those who bullied her, and other times it was Lydia stealing something while Daphne covered for her.
"You've changed so much in these ten years. If it weren't for the familiar feeling, I wouldn't have recognized you," Lydia held onto her hand, reluctant to let go, her eyes filled with nostalgia for the past.
Charles, witnessing this, also realized that this matter was likely more complex than he had anticipated.
Really.
Lydia loved her sister very much, so after finding a legitimate reason, she confronted Charles, saying, "Mr. Lancelot, may I ask you why you divorced Daphne?"
"We weren't compatible," Charles gave as a reason.
Lydia asked Daphne, "Is that what he said?"
"Mhm," Daphne nodded.
Lydia's eyes darted around.
Daffy must be lying!
"Well, it's good that you're divorced," Lydia fearlessly stirred up trouble, boldly saying, "I have many outstanding men around me, and when the time comes, I'll introduce you to them. Once they hear about how you protected me in the past, they'll be very curious about you."
"Okay," Daphne knew she was acting.
Upon hearing this, Charles subtly furrowed his brows.
It was obvious.
He wasn't too pleased with Lydia's words.
"Miss Murphy enjoys playing matchmaker?" Charles already harbored ill will towards Lydia.
"Not really," Lydia didn't back down one bit, "I just enjoy introducing people to Daphne. Daphne is such an outstanding person, she deserves the best."
"Miss Murphy isn't her; how would she know who is suitable for her?" Charles retorted.
"It's alright, I'll arrange for all of them to meet up, and Daphne can pick someone she likes," Lydia said confidently.
"..." Charles felt there was no point in continuing the conversation.
Lydia had already begun talking about introducing new people to Daphne in front of him before the divorce was even finalized. Any polite person wouldn't do such a thing.
"We can discuss this after you receive the divorce certificate, Daphne," Charles's words held a touch of coldness and displeasure. "As for the collaboration, I'll personally have someone from the Murphy Group negotiate with Mr. Murphy another day. Today, I won't delay Miss Murphy's rest."
"Alright," Mr. Murphy stood up to see them off.
It was just a conversation.
Both sides knew it wasn't about collaboration.
They were also aware that Charles's mention of negotiating with the Murphy Group another day was just an excuse. In the business world, as long as there was no signed contract on white paper, it could be dismissed.
After Charles and his group left.
Lydia immediately took out her phone and sent several messages to Daphne on WhatsApp.
Lydia: [Daffy, when you married Charles, was it because of his looks?]
Lydia: [He doesn't seem nice to you at all.]
Lydia: [He doesn't deserve to be your husband.]
Lydia: [He's really not good enough!!!]
In just one minute.
Lydia sent several messages to Daphne.
She didn't know about anything else, but from the way Charles looked at her sister, she didn't see any love or fondness.
If it weren't for my sister not informing him about my identity, she would have suspected that he was after Daphne's money! Daphne noticed her phone vibrating.
She didn't need to guess, she knew it was her sister bombarding her with consecutive messages. She didn't check them immediately, after all, Charles was there.
"You're skillful?" Charles stood in front of the car, looking down at her and asking.
Daphne couldn't have a proper conversation with him. "It's not a problem for me to hit you."
"...," Charles was speechless.
Mark was also silent.
"Just because Lydia said she would introduce you to rich guys, you think you have support?" Charles kept his frustration inside.
Daphne just wanted to provoke him. "Yes."
Charles was furious.
When anger takes over, people tend to say regretful words. "Do you really think those wealthy gentlemen would be interested in you? Even if you used to work as Miss Murphy's bodyguard in the Murphy family, it only means that you were once an employee of the Murphy family."
"Don't dream like Cinderella," Charles uttered heavily. "Even if those wealthy gentlemen pay attention to you later, it is only for the sake of the Murphy family's reputation."
He knew this circle all too well.
Once Daphne stepped into it, she would likely be devoured to the bone.
"After having a dream with you, you'll want to dream again," Daphne remained unaffected by his words.
"After dreaming a few more times, my worth might exceed yours."
"Do you think those people will be interested in you as much as I am?" Charles's words were chilling.
Daphne nodded. "Not impossible."
"It's better to have some self-awareness," Charles's tone became even deeper, and the words slipped out, "I'm interested in you simply because your face resembles Kayla's."
"..." Daphne was silent.
Charles felt a pressure in his chest. "Without that face, I wouldn't have even spared a glance."
"Say it again." Knowing something is one thing, hearing it firsthand is another.
She didn't want to be a substitute.
"I will marry you, take care of you, and love you, solely because you resemble Kayla," Charles repeated.
"Bang!"
"Boss!" Mark exclaimed in surprise.
Without hesitation, Daphne went for it.
She punched Charles in the face. If she hadn't considered that hitting him too hard would break his nose bone, she wouldn't have stopped.
"Oh, you thought that after you said those words, I would feel inferior, upset, and believe that I owe my current state to Kayla?" She spoke immediately after the punch, not giving him any leeway.
Charles covered his throbbing face, slightly bewildered.
