Chapter 465 Won't Make Things Difficult for You

But now that he thought about it, they had been tight for over twenty years, since they were just kids. They knew each other's families like the back of their hands.

Three months together felt better than some folks' decades-long relationships; they could totally get engaged.

"Tomorrow, I'll take you to get a ring," Chris said, buzzing with excitement about marrying Sierra. "After we get it, I'll find the perfect moment to pop the question."

Sierra didn't say a word, but her eyes had a playful glint at his enthusiasm.

Chris felt a rush of happiness.

When they got home, Chris suddenly remembered something, which  bugged him during dinner, making him a bit distracted.

"If you've got something to ask, just spit it out," Sierra said, noticing his mood and taking the lead.

She had already made up her mind. If he didn't know what kind of proposal she liked, she'd just tell him straight up, no guessing games.

"Um..." Chris was scared of getting chewed out but gathered his courage. "Do you still have a thing for the Fisher family heir?"

Sierra paused. Seeing her reaction, Chris's heart sank. Had she not moved on?

"It's nothing. Just curious," Chris said, genuinely liking Sierra. If he hadn't been scared of wrecking their friendship, he wouldn't have kept his feelings hidden for so long. "Whether you like him or not doesn't change how I feel about you, but..."

"But what?" Sierra asked, naturally following up.

"If I propose, you can't back out. Even if you want to be with him later, I won't let you go." Chris couldn't meet Sierra's eyes as he said this.

Sierra didn't know whether to laugh or be mad. Was Chris really this clueless?

"Even if you cry and throw a fit, I won't let you go," Chris added. "So when I propose, keep that in mind."

He didn't want to bring up this stuff during the proposal; he wanted to clear the air now.

The choice was up to Sierra.

"Go get your head checked," Sierra said calmly.

Chris was puzzled. "Why?"

"I'm worried your bad gene might get passed down to our kids."

Chris was stunned. Did Sierra just roast him?

"Do you think I'm the type to move on to someone new before breaking up with the old?" Sierra wanted to give Chris a piece of her mind but realized she might have been too convincing in the past.

"Of course not." Chris meant every word, which is why he felt so torn. "But you're not someone who can easily let go of someone you've liked for a long time."

She had liked that guy since they were young, for over ten years. Such a long crush—if it were him, he wouldn't be able to let go so quickly, let alone someone as sentimental as Sierra.

"You're right." Sierra decided to be blunt, realizing Chris might not get it otherwise. "I haven't let go of the person I liked when I was young. Not only have I not let go, but I still like him."

Chris was crushed. Was Sierra openly cheating on him?

"You..."

"What about me?"

"You're being ridiculous!" Chris felt a mix of hurt and anger. "Didn't you say you were over him? What's with the sudden change of heart?"

He hadn't done anything wrong lately, hadn't upset her. Why the sudden shift? Everything was fine just a moment ago!

"The person I liked when I was young, I never let go of," Sierra said, locking eyes with him, dead serious.

"Sierra!" Chris shouted, feeling like a total idiot.

"Did Mr. Fisher say something to you?" Chris stopped eating, starting to speculate. "Didn't you say he already had someone he liked? If that's true, why keep liking him?"

Even now, he couldn't bring himself to scold or blame her, just feeling angry—angry that he couldn't keep her.

If he hadn't confessed his feelings, if he hadn't told her he'd liked her for so long, would they still be best friends who could talk about anything?

With what Sierra had said, Chris thought he couldn't force her to be with him anymore.

"Chris," Sierra called out, her eyes sparkling like stars. "You are the biggest fool in the world."

"What?" Chris was speechless.

"The dumbest idiot. If I were still hung up on the person I liked when I was young and still thinking about marrying and having kids with him, what would you do?" Sierra said the most hurtful words in the gentlest tone.

Chris froze, his whole body stiffening. After a long while, he finally looked away and, with a heart full of complexity, said, "I would let you go."

"Not gonna propose anymore?"

"No."

There was no point in proposing; it would only crush his last shred of dignity.

Sierra smiled. "Got it."

Chris didn't say anything, and the dinner table atmosphere turned heavy and awkwardly silent.

"Would you still like me?" Sierra asked again.

"What do you take me for?" Chris's emotions flared up, but even then, he couldn't say a harsh word to Sierra. "Yeah, I had a crush on you for a long time. I hid my feelings because I was scared we wouldn't even be friends. But that doesn't mean I have no self-respect."

If he still pursued her, it would be shameless.

Chris could accept that she still had someone in her heart she hadn't completely let go of, but he couldn't accept her being with him while still wholeheartedly liking someone else.

"I'll explain the breakup to both our families," Chris said, still thinking of her even now. "I won't make things hard for you."

"Are we really breaking up?"

"Yeah." That word took almost all of Chris's strength.

Sierra stayed calm, her gaze fixed on Chris, who was filled with suppressed emotions. She said, word by word, "What if I told you that the person you liked when you were young also liked you from that time?"

Chris was stunned. Before he could react, Sierra dropped a bombshell. "I never liked Mr. Fisher. The person I've always liked is you."

"What do you mean?" Chris was slow to catch on.

"Back then, I was scared you'd find out I liked you, so I lied and said I liked Mr. Fisher," Sierra confessed. "After all, at that time, you said you'd always protect me as a friend."
