Chapter 636 It's No Use Regretting
"Okay," Charles felt, sensing that she was starting to give up.
"When you say you're not interested, it really means you're not good in bed," Peyton said, walking over with a mix of defiance and provocation in her eyes. "Besides Daphne, no one knows about your condition."
Peyton continued, "You know Daphne isn't the type to spread rumors. As long as you don't sleep with anyone else, no one will find out."
"Yeah, you're right," Charles agreed, not really caring about his reputation as long as Peyton would give up.
Peyton was clearly frustrated with his indifferent attitude. She took a deep breath and said, "I was right all along. What kind of normal adult man is as disinterested as you?"
"You already said it," Charles replied, using her words against her. "I'm not good in bed."
When it came to this sort of thing, Charles was always indifferent. Even if he occasionally had natural urges, he could just shift his focus. In this life, sex wasn't a necessity.
"Since you're so straightforward, I guess I'll just keep liking you," Peyton said, unable to let him go. "If you don't marry, I won't either. We can just spend our lives like this."
"Peyton." Charles's brow furrowed instantly.
Peyton adjusted her clothes and said nonchalantly, "I'm going back to my room. You should get some sleep."
"You like me because I saved you back then, right?" Charles wanted to make things clear.
Peyton admitted openly, "Yes."
"Then I wish I hadn't saved you," Charles said, his words cutting deep. "I wish I had never met you."
Charles knew his words were hurtful, but some things needed to be said harshly to avoid ruining her life.
"What a pity! There's no machine to turn back time." Peyton smiled indifferently, understanding his intention. "Regret won't help you."
Charles paused.
Peyton naturally concluded, "I'm going to sleep. See you tomorrow." With that, she left Charles's room.
The moment she turned around, Peyton could no longer maintain her smile. Even though she knew Charles said those things on purpose, her heart still ached.
Charles stood there without moving. Even after Peyton vanished from sight, he remained rooted to the spot.
He didn't know how to describe his current feelings. He was sure he didn't like Peyton, but reflecting on his words left him feeling conflicted.
Charles didn't think he was someone worth her affection. Why would she want to spend her life on him?
The next morning, Laura and Hayden were a bit surprised to see Charles back. After breakfast, Hayden asked directly, "Why are you back?"
"Mom asked me to come back," Charles answered directly.
"Since when have you been so compliant?" Hayden asked.
Charles responded, "I'm a father now. I need to set a good example for the kids."
Laura and Hayden both paused. Even the usually calm and indifferent Hayden felt a bit strange at this moment.
"He's lying to you," Peyton said, calling him out without hesitation. She knew Charles too well. "He's just a godfather in name, no blood relation."
"Whose child is it?" Laura asked, a bit curious.
Regardless of whether it was in name only, it was rare for Charles.
"Daphne's," Charles replied, his eyes darkening. His deep voice carried a hint of affection he didn't even notice.
Laura paused and instinctively looked at Peyton.
Hayden was also taken aback.
"I know about this," Peyton said, trying to ease their concern with a smile. "Laura, Hayden, I have a meeting at the company. I need to go."
"Drive safely," Laura reminded her.
Peyton nodded and then left.
For a moment, the living room was just the three of them.
Laura glanced outside and then hesitantly said to Charles, "Have you really not considered Peyton?"
"No," Charles replied bluntly.
"Why not?" Laura pressed. "She's beautiful, well-educated, capable, and her mom and I are friends."
"That's exactly why I shouldn't consider it," Charles said, making it clear he wanted to end Laura's hopes. "I can't get Daphne out of my heart; she's unforgettable. Forcing myself to be with Peyton would be unfair to her."
"Didn't you say you had moved on?" Laura's tone remained gentle.
"I thought I had," Charles admitted, his thin lips parting slightly. He no longer hid his feelings. "But now I can be sure that now and in the future, I will only love Daphne."
Laura asked again, "You're not lying to me?"
"No," Charles answered firmly.
"Alright," Laura said, deciding not to interfere with his decision. "Then I'll find time to talk to Peyton."
Having noticed Peyton's feelings for Charles and that Charles had no longer shown affection for Daphne, Laura had thought it would be wise to try to bring Peyton and Charles together. Peyton's lively personality and Charles's quiet demeanor seemed like a good match.
But now that Charles still had someone in his heart, it wasn't suitable to match him with someone else.
"Are you really Daphne's child's godfather?" Hayden asked, his tone gentle and refined.
Charles nodded. "Yes."
"Did Benjamin agree?" Hayden asked again.
"He has no reason to disagree," Charles said, his thin lips parting slightly. "On this point, he and I think alike. Having one more person to help raise the child can only be a good thing, right??"
Hayden gave him a meaningful look but said nothing more.
Laura asked, "Do you have a picture of the child?"
"Yes."
"Let me see."
Laura had rarely seen Daphne's child, so she was curious.
Charles took out his phone, opened the album, and found a photo taken yesterday afternoon before he left. He handed it over.
The photo showed three people: Charles, Diana, and Louis.
"So cute," Laura said, smiling. "Both of them look like Daphne."
"Yeah," Charles agreed.
Laura tentatively asked, "When are you going to Gedser again? I also want to see Daphne's child."
"In a few days," Charles said, not hiding it from them. Now that he understood his own heart, he was completely honest. "I'll settle this matter then."
Laura said okay and returned the phone to him.
