Chapter 491 Love is the Best Cure for All Emotional Distress

"Hey, long time no see," Daphne said, all casual-like.

Charles gave a little nod, feeling all sorts of mixed-up inside.

In the end, he just nodded again, didn't say a word, and reluctantly looked away, turning to leave.

As they passed each other, whatever was left between them just vanished.

From that moment, they were on their own paths.

"Wasn't that Charles just now?" Chris whispered to Sierra, trying to keep it low so Benjamin wouldn't hear.

Sierra just gave a faint "Yes."

Chris shot a look at Benjamin.

The whole ex-versus-current showdown—why didn't they throw down? So boring.

"Let's go," Benjamin said, still holding Daphne's hand like always.

"Okay," Daphne replied.

Once inside, while Daphne was hanging with Sierra, Chris made a beeline for Benjamin, curiosity all over his face. "Spill it, what were you feeling when you saw Charles just now?"

"What do you think?" Benjamin shot back, cool as ever.

"How would I know? I'm not you," Chris was dying to know. "Don't dodge, just tell me."

Benjamin fiddled with his phone and said, "I wanted to send you to hell."

Chris was like, "What does that have to do with me?"

Benjamin didn't wanna face Charles, so he was taking it out on him?

"Why'd you suddenly stop walking?" Benjamin's eyes locked on Chris, his tone a bit dangerous. "Anyone who didn't know better might think you and Charles had some history."

"How would I know I'd stop?" Chris shot back.

At that moment, Chris had no clue why, but seeing Charles made him freeze.

"Why, were you scared?" Chris was genuinely curious about Benjamin's thoughts. "Afraid Daphne might drop your hand and Charles would swoop in?"

Benjamin stayed chill. "I'm not you."

He knew exactly how Daphne would react.

And he had Charles figured out too.

He never worried about the stuff Chris was talking about.

"Not even a little bit worried?"

"Nope."

"Why not?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Other guys, when they see their girl's ex, either freak out or get all nervous. Why are you so chill?" Chris was baffled.

Benjamin's reaction made no sense.

"There's one thing wrong," Benjamin said seriously.

Chris thought for a sec and asked, "What?"

"She's my fiancée," Benjamin was all about the titles. "Not my girlfriend."

Chris was speechless.

Chris wondered, was it really necessary to be so picky about a title?

"I'm not inferior to Charles," Benjamin said with a slight smile. "I'm confident I can give Daphne a good future. Why should I have the feelings you're talking about?"

"That's not my point. I'm talking about Daphne's heart," Chris said, analyzing. "That's not something you can control."

"You're wrong."

"Hmm?"

"The best way to get over someone? Time and a solid new partner," Benjamin said, taking his time. "Love's the ultimate fix for all those emotional scars. But the key thing is..."

Chris's curiosity was on high alert. "What?"

"Daphne's a rational person."

Sure, love could make people lose their mind, but when something crossed her line, she would't fall again, and she would learn her lesson.Chris glanced over at Daphne but kept quiet.

He knew people as decisive and straightforward as Daphne were rare.

"She's good with you," Chris said, admiring Daphne and seeing her as one of their own. "You might not be the sharpest with emotions, but you're loyal."

Benjamin shot him a look. "That comment fits you better."

With that, he got up and walked over to Daphne.

They got back super late that night.

On the way back, Benjamin asked Daphne, "How do you feel seeing him now?"

"Very calm," Daphne knew exactly who he meant and answered honestly. "I don't feel the discomfort I used to."

Last year, when she saw Charles on his birthday, she forgave him. But seeing him all sorry and in pain made her uncomfortable.

But now, she was chill. She wished him well for the future.

Benjamin felt relieved, knowing Daphne had moved on from that bad marriage.

Back at the hotel, Charles kept staring out the window until Mark walked in with a cake, snapping him out of it.

"Mr. Lancelot, this is a cake Hayden and Laura ordered for you," Mark said, putting the cake on the table. "They also asked me to tell you something."

Charles paused. A cake?

"Don't live your twenty-ninth year the same as your twenty-eighth," Mark said.

"Got it." Charles remembered it was his birthday today, his eyes filled with mixed emotions. "Take the cake away."

"This is your birthday cake."

"I'm giving it to you."

"Mrs. Lancelot asked me to take a picture of you making a wish."

Charles sighed, put on the birthday hat, and made a wish after Mark lit the candles.

If wishes could come true, he hoped Daphne would be well.

Mark played the birthday song while Charles made his wish.

After blowing out the candles, Mark asked, "Mr. Lancelot, what did you wish for?"

"If I say it, it won't come true."

"It won't come true even if you don't say it."

Charles shot him a look.

Mark was as annoying as ever.

"I have a gift for you," Mark said mysteriously, his tone light. "Come with me."

Normally, Charles wouldn't bother.

But today, he felt too quiet being alone and suddenly wanted someone around, even if that person always said annoying things.

"Mr. Lancelot?" Mark called him.

Charles snapped out of it and stood up. "Let's go."

Mark led him to the next room.

When the door opened, the room was decked out like a party, with "Happy Birthday" in big letters.

Confetti cannons went off!
