Chapter 582 What Do You Mean by "with Two Men"?
"You're calling to ask who I am?" Brian shot back.
Jesse's usually calm eyes flickered with emotion. After a few seconds, he asked, "Where's Elara? Let her answer the phone."
"She's in the shower," Brian replied.
He put the phone on speaker so Elara could hear.
Jesse, initially a bit emotional, thought for a moment and asked, "Are you her cousin?"
"No," Brian said smoothly, his gentle tone making him sound like a gentleman, "I just met her today."
It wasn't a lie; Brian had indeed just met Elara today.
Elara gave him a thumbs up, pleased with his response.
"Have her call me back after her shower. I'll wait," Jesse said, not wanting to talk to Brian any longer, and then hung up.
Elara didn't want to call him back. She turned off the phone screen and left it alone.
An hour later, Elara finished her shower and lay on the bed.
Knowing Jesse's stubbornness, she sent him a message, not wanting him to wait all night: [I've said everything I needed to say. There's nothing more to discuss.]
After sending the message, she set her phone to silent and went to sleep.
A few seconds after lying down, she couldn't resist picking up her phone. There was a voice call from Jesse.
She frowned and, after some thought, decided not to answer.
Jesse was getting anxious.
A strange man who Elara had just met answered Elara's phone?
He wanted to find her but didn't know where she was.
After weighing his options, Jesse called Daphne.
At this time, Daphne was already asleep. When she heard the phone vibrating, she instinctively snuggled closer to Benjamin and pulled the quilt over her ears.
Benjamin noticed the vibrating phone and was about to hang up when he saw it was Jesse calling.
Over the years, no matter how busy or urgent things were, Jesse had never called Daphne in the middle of the night.
Looking at Daphne sleeping soundly in his arms, Benjamin hung up the call for her and then sent Jesse a message from his phone: [What's up? Daphne's asleep.]
Jesse realized what he had done and quickly replied: [It's nothing.]
Benjamin: [You wouldn't call this late if it was nothing. What's going on?]
Jesse struggled but eventually sent a message about Elara: [I want Ms. Murphy to help me find out where Elara is. She went into the subway station earlier, and I lost track of her.]
Benjamin: [I'll have Kevin help you check.]
After sending the message, he contacted Kevin.
At this hour, Kevin was still having fun.
Jesse waited anxiously for about twenty minutes before receiving a message from Benjamin.
Benjamin didn't give him a detailed address, only replying that Elara was in a safe place.
He didn't explain more.
The reason was simple. Elara had previously asked Daphne not to tell Jesse her whereabouts if he ever asked for help.
Jesse wanted to ask more, but Benjamin had already sent a message telling him to get some sleep.
So, Jesse spent the entire night waiting and overthinking.
At seven in the morning, Jesse called Elara, but no one picked up.
He kept trying at eight and nine, but still, no answer.
Jesse texted: [Elara, are you still asleep? If you don't respond, I'm going to report you missing.]
When Elara saw Jesse's message, she felt a mix of anger and amusement at his worry.
Around noon, she finally called him back.
The moment Jesse heard Elara's voice, he felt a wave of relief and asked, "Why didn't you answer my calls or messages last night?"
"Busy with something," Elara lied.
Jesse bought it. "What were you busy with?"
"Personal stuff. Not really convenient to share," Elara replied lazily, her eyes glued to a TV show. "Just tell me what you need; I have a date this afternoon."
"With whom?" Jesse asked.
"Don't you think you're prying a bit too much?" Elara pushed back.
Jesse went silent, not daring to press further.
Elara smirked, "Or do you want to go on a date with me too?"
"What exactly are you doing?" Jesse's heart tightened, and he gripped his phone tighter.
"What do you think adults do together?" Elara said casually, popping a piece of fruit into her mouth. "And don't even think about telling Willie. We agreed to do whatever we want after marriage. We don't interfere with each other."
"So, you're saying you spent the night with a man last night?" Jesse was struggling to understand.
The Elara he knew was independent, assertive, academically excellent, emotionally intelligent, and had her own life plan. But now, she was hooking up?
Elara thought about playing cards with Richard and Brian after dinner last night and admitted, "No, with two men."
Richard, who had just come out, and Brian, who was with him, both paused. Richard's eyes showed a bit of an elder's concern for the younger.
"Not talking to you anymore, they're here," Elara quickly hung up and set her phone to Do Not Disturb mode.
After finishing everything, Elara cleared her throat and called out, "Richard, Brian."
"Are you married?" Richard asked, his voice unintentionally colder after hearing her earlier words.
"You could say that, but Willie and I are in a fake marriage. The marriage certificate is fake too," Elara quickly explained, not wanting to be misunderstood as someone who cheated in marriage. "He helped me pursue my crush, and we acted."
"What do you mean by 'with two men'?" Richard asked.
"Well," Elara hesitated, then admitted, "I just wanted him to know that rejecting me made my life miserable after marriage."
Richard and Brian both frowned. Clearly, they thought this approach was unwise.
"You shouldn't make him think your life is miserable after marriage. You should make him realize that rejecting you was his loss," Brian advised. "Don't try to make the person who rejected you feel sympathy or pity. Make him regret it."
Richard didn't speak, but his expression showed he agreed with Brian.
