Chapter 747 You Are
Charles paused for a moment, his thoughts briefly interrupted.
His first reaction was that it was impossible for Caspian to tell her about his secret proposal plans. If Caspian had, he wouldn't have sent her here.
"Is that what he told you?" Charles quickly adjusted his emotions and asked her naturally.
"Yes." Diana didn't dare to go into too much detail, fearing a slip-up. "He said he took leave to prepare for proposing to me."
Charles let out a chuckle.
Diana was a bit unsure. "What are you laughing at?"
"If you really want Caspian to propose to you, I can discreetly pass the message along." Charles was now certain that Diana was trying to trick him. "He can temporarily set aside what he's working on."
Diana asked the key question, "Didn't you say it was very important?"
"It is very important," Charles said meaningfully. "but nothing is more important than your happiness. The company is very stable now, and taking a break won't cause any loss."
"Is he really busy with work?" Diana was a bit surprised.
Charles's gaze fell on her, his deep eyes carrying a hint of teasing. "Haven't you already asked Caspian about it?"
Diana slumped on the sofa, leaning back. "You knew I was trying to trick you."
"When he's done and things are settled, I'll tell you what he's been busy with," Charles reassured her, not wanting her to worry too much.
Diana sighed and lay back on the sofa, lost in thought.
Could it be that Caspian didn't want her to go to his place because he had project materials there?
Thinking of this, she sent a message to Caspian.
Because he was driving, Caspian didn't reply immediately.
"This was supposed to take over a month to complete," Charles added to make things more believable, "but he compressed the timeline to be able to go to Ivrea City with you."
"Over a month?" Diana hadn't expected it to take so long.
Charles nodded. "Yes."
"Charles, you're so mean," Diana said, still lying on the sofa, speaking in a daze. "You knew we were about to get engaged, yet you gave him such a heavy project."
Not even leaving time for a proposal.
"An engagement only takes two days," Charles pretended, "that's enough."
"What about the proposal?" Diana asked.
Charles remained indifferent. "You two are so familiar with each other, why even propose?"
Diana felt speechless.
On a whim, she blurted out, "Did you propose to my mom back then?"
"No," Charles answered directly.
Diana immediately sat up, her eyes full of surprise and shock. "Really?"
"We got married suddenly." Charles didn't mind her knowing. He could now talk about the past calmly. "After our first meeting, we felt we were a good match and got together."
"What about the wedding? You must have had that, right?" Diana was concerned about another matter.
Because she was worried about touching Charles's sore spot, she had never asked about these things and wasn't particularly clear about what had happened between him and her mom.
As for her mom, she was already with her dad, so it wasn't appropriate to ask.
Charles glanced at her.
Diana immediately understood and tentatively asked, "No wedding either?"
"Right," Charles admitted.
"What kind of marriage is that..." Diana couldn't understand their relationship and curiously gossiped, "You didn't follow any procedures. How did my grandparents agree?"
Charles was silent.
Diana caught his expression and a guess formed in her mind.
Before she could ask, Charles spoke first, "When I married Daphne, her mother had already passed away."
"As for her father," Charles paused here, worried about affecting his image in Diana's eyes, "he didn't know."
Diana gave him a thumbs up.
"I won't say much to that." Diana wasn't involved and didn't know what had happened back then. "But for myself, I hope Caspian can be a bit more free."
Not necessarily for him to propose to her, but at least to ensure he had time when she proposed to him.
Charles seized the opportunity to ask, "What kind of proposal do you want from Caspian?"
"Anything will do." Diana wasn't picky in this regard. Talking about it brought a smile to her lips. "As long as it's him, even if he just brings a bouquet of flowers to propose, I'll be willing."
"What if there are no flowers?" Charles asked her.
Diana shook her head. "That's not acceptable."
For a proposal, at the very least, there should be flowers and a ring. If there was none of that, it just showed a lack of care.
However, she hoped to propose to Caspian before he proposed to her.
"Then I'll tell Caspian tomorrow to prepare more flowers for the proposal," Charles chatted with her, his voice steady and serious. "You won't accept anything less than an acre of flowers."
Diana gave him a displeased look. "You're deliberately causing trouble."
"I'm helping you," Charles said kindly.
"I'm seriously starting to think you're single all these years not because you don't want to get married, but because your emotional intelligence is so low that no one wants to marry you," Diana teased him.
Charles never defended himself in such matters. "That's plausible."
Diana looked at him for a few moments and said nothing more.
She knew that wasn't the reason at all.
Besides Peyton from childhood, many others wanted to marry Charles. As a twice-married man, Charles was still very popular in their circle due to his looks and status, no less than those who had never been married. But Charles rejected them all.
At first, he simply refused. Later, he used Diana as an excuse, saying he wanted to focus on raising his daughter and didn't want her to have a stepmother.
For a while, people in their circle even thought he really had a daughter.
"What are you thinking about so deeply?" Charles noticed her staring at him and raised his voice slightly.
Diana spoke honestly, "I was thinking about how people used to mistake me for your biological daughter."
"You are." Charles always upheld this belief.
"If my mom heard that, you'd be in trouble." Diana knew what he meant, but it was too easy to misunderstand.
Charles didn't care about it. "She won't hear it."
Diana was speechless.
Not just Daphne. If Benjamin heard it, he would probably have a word or two with Charles.
"Caspian will probably be busy for a while. If you get bored, you can go back to Gedser and hang out with your friends," Charles told her before bed, worried she might get bored here. "He'll need at least ten days to finish."
