Chapter 366 I Want You to Remember Me
"So, you're still messing around?" Daphne couldn't grasp what Charles was up to.
Charles ignored her question and pressed on, "If that guy had killed me, would you have been sad?"
Daphne paused, confused by his sudden question.
"Would you remember me forever?" Charles asked again.
"I won't let anything happen to you," Daphne dodged. "If I couldn't handle it, I'd have found a way to keep things under control."
Charles' eyes grew more intense without an answer.
Daphne avoided his gaze, missing his expression. She tossed the rope aside and looked at him. "I found you; let's go back."
"The game's not over," Charles said firmly.
Daphne was puzzled. "What game?"
"Today, you choose: be with me or let me die," Charles demanded, standing up. "The game's not over until you decide."
"Why?" Daphne asked.
"You're the most important person to me," Charles said, looking deeply at her. "If someone has to remember me, I want it to be you."
Daphne sensed something deeper. She tried to stay calm. "You don't need anyone to remember you. You're Charles Lancelot, CEO of the Lancelot Group. Everyone knows you."
"I'm not him," Charles blurted out.
Daphne was stunned. "What do you mean?"
"I'm not the Charles who married and divorced you," he said. "I'm not the CEO of the Lancelot Group."
Charles stepped closer. "I'm just your Charles. My world revolves around you."
Daphne's mind raced. 'Is this a new personality?' she wondered.
"You..." Daphne struggled to speak.
"Confused by what I'm saying?" Charles smiled sadly. "Even I don't get it."
From the moment he saw Daphne at Brian's base, he felt she was the most important person to him. Later, he found an agreement in a box, revealing a deal the old Charles made with Brian. He began to suspect he wasn't the real Charles.
After researching, he became convinced he wasn't.
"But one thing's clear," Charles said, his eyes full of possessiveness. "I love you more than he did. You're my everything; my one and only."
Daphne's heart sank. "Charles."
If the guy in front of her was really a new personality created by Brian, what did her previous distance from him mean?
"I know I deceived you and lied to you. I admit it," Charles confessed, opening up completely. "I did it because I was terrified of losing you, of not getting your attention and care."
Out of fear, he acted desperately, willing to be anything she liked.
Charles was scared Daphne would leave him, scared she would reject him because of the past Charles, and even more scared that her world would move on without him.
Charles smiled gently. "Daphne, make a choice."
He admitted he was a coward. Before being rejected, he could fool himself into thinking he had a chance. But after being rejected so decisively, he realized he had to force her to be with him or risk losing her forever.
"Stop overthinking; you are him," Daphne tried to stabilize his emotions. "These strange thoughts are because of the brain injury from the high fever and the resulting amnesia."
Charles gave a desolate smile, on the verge of collapse. "I'm not him. I hate him for not cherishing you, for his arrogance, for everything about him."
If he were the old Charles, he would never have let Daphne get hurt, and things wouldn't have come to this.
"Charles," Daphne's heart felt heavy.
"Do you know why I'm so sure I'm not him?" Charles desperately wanted her to remember him.
Daphne felt a lump in her throat. "Why?"
"Because before I met you, I only wanted to destroy things I didn't like," Charles revealed. "After meeting you, I wanted to destroy anyone who would compete with me for you."
Daphne's heart tightened. 'Is this a dangerous alter ego?' she thought.
"But I didn't do that because I know you wouldn't like it; you would hate it," Charles continued, intending to end things today. "I want you to like me."
Daphne suppressed her emotions and spoke gently, "Let's go home and talk it over."
Charles said, "We can't go back."
Daphne insisted, "I'll take you; we can go back."
She genuinely wanted to talk things out with him.
After all, the Charles in front of her, despite his deception, had never hurt her.
"Daphne," Charles subtly distanced himself, glanced outside, and continued, "Do you really not want to be with me?"
"I..." Daphne tried to coax him back first.
Charles, however, said seriously, "I want the truth. Don't lie to me."
"We haven't spent enough time together," Daphne told him honestly. "If you really care about this, I'll treat you as a new Charles and spend some time together, okay?"
"No need," Charles said, heartbroken.
Daphne pressed her lips together. He looked at her. "I have one request. I hope you can agree."
Daphne said, "Go ahead."
"I want you to remember me," Charles said with extreme seriousness.
