Chapter 553 You're Not Alone
Thinking about it, Jesse picked up the phone and set up everything that needed to be done.
Once he was sure everything was squared away, he got up and headed to the kitchen to whip up some dinner.
That evening, they had dinner together.
After dinner, they plopped down on the couch to watch a movie. After a bit of hesitation, Jesse asked, "Elara."
Elara looked over. "What's up?"
Jesse went on, "Have you been upset about something lately?"
"No." Elara shook her head. She couldn't think of anything to be upset about; she was pretty happy right now.
Jesse figured she wanted to handle things on her own. He pursed his lips and kept his tone cool. "I'm your boyfriend now. If you're having a hard time or feeling down, you can tell me. I'll help you out."
Elara looked surprised. She raised her hand to feel his forehead, checking if he had a fever.
"What are you doing?" Jesse was puzzled.
"What's gotten into you?" Elara never thought Jesse would call himself her boyfriend. "Why are you saying this all of a sudden?"
Jesse replied earnestly, "I want you to know you're not alone."
"Seriously, if you need my help with anything, just tell me," Jesse said, wanting to protect her. His tone stayed cool. "I'll always be here for you."
"I actually need your help with something right now," Elara said, rubbing her fingers.
Jesse asked, "What is it?"
"Kiss me. Will you?" Elara asked.
"Why do you always want to kiss me?" Jesse's tone was more hesitant than usual, and his usually cool eyes showed some emotion.
"I just want to kiss you, to see what it feels like," Elara's gaze stayed on his face, watching his every expression. "If you don't want to, that's fine. I won't force you."
After saying this, Elara looked away, sitting there with a forlorn expression.
She looked so pitiful.
Jesse's usually cool heart softened instantly. "Okay."
Elara paused. "What?"
"You can kiss me," Jesse's hands on his lap started to sweat a little, and his heart began to race. "But only on the cheek."
"Really?" Elara asked.
"Yes," Jesse nodded.
"You're not joking, right?" Elara confirmed again.
"No," Jesse responded.
Elara immediately smiled. She leaned in close to him, as if deliberately torturing him, closing the distance but not acting. "Then I'll kiss you."
Jesse's hand on the couch tightened unconsciously. He held his breath, extremely nervous.
Time ticked by, and Jesse's heart was beating rapidly. Seeing that she still hadn't kissed him, he instinctively turned his head to ask, "You..."
Their lips met.
Jesse's back stiffened, and he froze.
Elara was also stunned. She hadn't expected him to turn his head just as she kissed him.
"I didn't expect this, Jesse," Elara's ears turned red, but she pretended to be calm and spoke seriously, "If you wanted me to kiss your lips, you could have just said so. No need for tricks."
"No, I didn't," Jesse quickly explained. He had just wanted to ask her something, but as soon as he turned, she kissed him.
Elara's heart was pounding, but she tried to play it cool. "Yeah, right."
"You don't believe me," Jesse could sense the doubt in her voice.
"I do believe you. I said you were right," Elara's mind was still buzzing from the kiss, which was soft and sweet.
Jesse got stubborn. "You don't believe me."
"It's hard to buy your story," Elara wanted another kiss, so she set a trap. "You didn't turn your head for so long, but you did just as I was about to kiss you. Clearly, you did it on purpose."
Jesse went silent. He wanted to explain but didn't know how. What had just happened was too coincidental.
"I really didn't do it on purpose," Jesse pursed his lips, his heart racing, and his ears turning red. "If you're mad, you can take it out on me. Bite me, hit me, curse me, whatever you want."
Elara shook her head. "No."
Jesse asked, "Then what can I do to make up for you?"
Elara said, "Let me kiss you back."
"What?" Jesse thought he had misheard.
"You just took my first kiss," Elara spoke seriously, pretending to be angry, "If you let me kiss you back, I won't be mad."
Jesse swallowed, his usually cool eyes showing some emotion. "Okay."
Elara looked at him.
Jesse looked back at her.
The next moment, Elara leaned over and pushed him down on the couch, her lips gently and ambiguously landing on his.
At that moment, Jesse felt his mind go blank, his senses filled with her sweet scent.
He lay there stiffly, letting Elara kiss him.
After what felt like forever, the kiss finally ended.
Elara got up from him and quickly slipped into her bedroom, her face flushed.
Jesse still lay there, his thoughts all over the place.
For the first time, his usually cool eyes showed emotions they had never held before.
Jesse tried to calm his racing heart, but even after more than ten minutes, it hadn't slowed down.
He slowly sat up, his mind replaying the scene of Elara kissing him.
Jesse raised his hand to pinch the bridge of his nose, trying to calm himself, but it was no use.
After a while, Elara, now calm, came out of her room. Seeing Jesse still sitting on the couch, she felt a bit nervous.
Her first thought was, 'is he mad?'
"Where's the water dispenser?" She deliberately brought up a topic, trying to gauge Jesse's mood.
Jesse looked up at her and pointed. "Over there."
Elara pretended to get some water.
Jesse called out to her, "Do you have a moment?"
"What's up?" Elara asked.
"I want to talk to you about something," Jesse's face was cool, his thoughts unreadable.
Elara's hand holding the cup stiffened, and she felt a bit regretful.
She shouldn't have moved so fast, but he had agreed, and she couldn't help herself.
Taking a deep breath and preparing herself mentally, she turned to look at him. "Go ahead."
"If I'm not mistaken, you knew I didn't turn my head on purpose just now," Jesse's intelligence returned, his cool eyes fixed on her face.
