Chapter 284 Everyone Questioned Benjamin
Daphne cut to the chase, "How's Benjamin doing at the company?"
"Pretty well," Jesse replied.
Daphne raised an eyebrow. Getting praise from Jesse wasn't easy.
"What do you think he's particularly good at?" she asked.
Jesse hesitated, glancing at her a few times before finally speaking. "He's more suited to be a boss. He handles tasks flawlessly, has a unique perspective, and never makes mistakes."
"I see," Daphne murmured. Benjamin seemed to be fitting in well, even excelling.
Jesse waited quietly for her to continue.
"Give him some tasks from my subsidiary companies," Daphne instructed. "If he manages well, find him a position there."
"Okay," Jesse agreed.
Daphne figured Benjamin probably preferred staying close to home. She'd find him a convenient position nearby.
With that settled, she got back to work. The day flew by.
Remembering her promise to meet Emma, she didn't work late and left with Benjamin at clock-out time.
Jesse noticed them leaving together and sent Daphne a message: [Boss, I think your friend has ulterior motives.]
Daphne, driving to meet Emma, didn't check her phone.
Emma had booked a members-only club, a hotspot for high society and top-tier celebrities, known for its security and privacy.
When Daphne and Benjamin arrived, Emma and the others were already there. Benjamin got a call and let Daphne go in first.
"Daphne, over here!"
"Daphne!"
Emma and Kevin greeted her warmly.
Daphne joined Emma and Zoey, glancing at Dominic and Sam, recalling what Evan had told her. She thought about probing but decided it wasn't the right time.
"Daphne, sit over here," Kevin suggested. "They all have partners; we single folks should stick together."
"Don't include me," Emma chimed in. "I'm single now, too."
"You broke up?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
"Emma probably scared him off with her fierceness."
"Emma hits hard; most guys can't handle it."
They started gossiping.
Daphne was curious, too. "How did you two break up?"
"He felt our family backgrounds were too different, and being with me was stressful," Emma said casually. "He also said his friends thought he was a gold digger; he didn't like the unequal relationship, so he broke up."
Zoey and Daphne were puzzled. Wasn't love supposed to be about mutual affection?
"Your ex is an idiot. If his friends said that, he should've clapped back that they don't even have the chance to be gold diggers," Sam said bluntly, not caring about the sensitivity of the topic.
"Not necessarily. Some guys have a lot of pride," Dominic added. "If their girlfriend's family background is way better, they might feel inferior."
Daphne paused, thinking about what Evan had said about Benjamin. She took the chance to ask, "Would you feel that way?"
"I would," Dominic admitted without hesitation. "If the gap isn't too big, I'd work to close it. If it's too big, I'd reject it from the start."
"Why?" Zoey asked innocently. "Isn't love just about mutual affection?"
"Young love can run on feelings alone, but as adults, we can't be so naive," Dominic said seriously. "She clearly has better options. Why should I hold her back? Besides, if our family backgrounds are too different, her parents would worry."
"Good thing you have a good background, or the girls who like you would be miserable," Kevin teased.
Daphne pursed her lips, unsure how to respond.
Luckily, the topic shifted. After another round of conversation, Benjamin walked in, exuding a lazy, handsome charm.
The gathering was organized because of him, so once he arrived, everyone continued to enjoy and relax.
By this time, they had already drunk a lot, with many empty bottles on the table.
Everyone there could hold their liquor well; despite drinking a lot, they were fine.
However, Daphne was different. After a few drinks, she felt a bit dizzy.
Remembering the last time, she tried to stay sober, but by the end of the gathering, the alcohol had made her quite groggy.
Luckily, she didn't do anything irrational and leaned obediently on Emma's shoulder.
"Will Benjamin take Daphne home later?" Emma assessed the situation and asked.
They all trusted each other, so they didn't worry about leaving Daphne with Benjamin. But if it were someone else without a trusted person around, they wouldn't get drunk.
Like the last time at Rex's gathering, Daphne only felt at ease because Evan was there.
Benjamin looked at the groggy Daphne and said, "Sure."
"Benjamin," Zoey thought of something and asked, pretending not to know, "Did Daphne do something to offend you?"
She still remembered what was said in the group chat last time.
Benjamin had brought breakfast for Daphne.
She always felt Benjamin had other intentions.
Benjamin's eyes lifted slightly, scanning the curious faces before finally looking at Zoey. "What do you mean?"
"Don't play dumb. We all know you brought breakfast for Daphne last time," Zoey said boldly. "If Daphne didn't offend you, would you suddenly bring breakfast?"
Emma and Zoey knew the details but had to pretend.
They needed to dispel Benjamin's intention to trouble Daphne.
"What's wrong with me bringing her breakfast?" Benjamin's tone was lazy, and his demeanor was noble. "Who says employees can't bring breakfast for their boss?"
Everyone fell silent.
Benjamin was truly deep-minded, finding such a reasonable excuse that left them speechless.
