Chapter 498 Are You Fooling Me
Emma's first thought was that Benjamin had called someone to catch her.
She figured, as long as he wasn't coming himself, even if Evan and the crew showed up, she could still make a break for it.
If she couldn't win, she could at least run, right? With that in mind, she waited.
After a bit, a good-looking dude with a dark vibe stepped out of the yard. Rocking a custom suit, he shot Emma a frosty look.
It was Emery!
Without a second thought, Emma scaled the wall and bounced.
Her head was spinning with questions about how Benjamin and Emery were in cahoots. Weren't they supposed to be strangers?
"I gave you the intel. Keep a tighter leash next time," Benjamin said casually, giving a side-eye. "Don't let her mess up other people's marriages again."
"Got it," Emery replied and then left the yard.
At the same time, he called someone to start tracking Emma.
When Daphne overheard the call, she instinctively wanted to get up and help Emma.
Benjamin pulled her back into his arms. "Where do you think you're going?"
"I'm gonna help Emma."
"Sit down."
"Benjamin," Daphne called out.
Benjamin looked at her serious face and blurted, "You giving me a hard time?"
Daphne explained, "No."
"I just heard someone say they were looking for an excuse to give me the cold shoulder," Benjamin said, keeping score.
"Who told you not to let me use the computer?" Daphne started to get serious. "The doc said I could use the computer and phone as long as I don't stare at them all day."
"You know you can't stare at them all day? Who was it that said she'd only use it for a bit but ended up glued to it all day?"
Knowing she was in the wrong, Daphne softened her tone and tried to reason with him. "I promise, from now on, I won't use it for more than four hours at a time."
"You said the same thing last time," Benjamin called her out.
Daphne still wanted to help Emma. "This time, I'm serious."
"When are you not serious?" Benjamin raised an eyebrow.
Daphne didn't like using her phone, but every time she got on the computer, she lost track of time. She couldn't be indulged.
"If you don't agree, I'll be bummed." Daphne pinched his hand and looked at him with her big, beautiful eyes. "The doc said pregnant women should stay happy."
Benjamin's lips curved into a slight smile. He pinched her slightly chubby cheek. "You always use this to guilt-trip me, knowing I can't stand to see you unhappy."
"Yep." Daphne's eyes sparkled with a faint smile.
Benjamin pinched her cheek a couple more times.
Daphne's reasoning really left him no room to say no.
"You wanna help Emma?" Benjamin asked her.
"Yeah," Daphne said honestly, not worried he'd spill the beans. "Emma wants to bail, and I need to help cover for her."
Benjamin still held her. "If you help her, it may delay her from ending up with the guy she likes for a few years."
Daphne was puzzled. "Why?"
"Can't you see she likes Emery?" Benjamin started to mess with her.
Daphne thought for a moment and shook her head.
Up until now, the only thing Daphne could sense was that Emma had some interest in Emery. As for liking, it didn't seem to be at that level yet.
After all, if she really liked him, she wouldn't have come to her for help to cover her tracks.
"It's no wonder you can't see it. A lot's gone down between her and Emery these past few months," Benjamin went on. "If you really help her, you'll mess up their whole game."
Daphne's interest was piqued. "Game?"
"The game of her running and him chasing," Benjamin said slowly, his deep voice smooth as silk.
Daphne was super confused. How come she hadn't heard about this?
"When I was chasing you, did you want anyone butting into our business?" Benjamin asked her.
Daphne thought for a sec. "Either way is fine."
Whether someone interfered or not, if it was meant to be, they'd end up together. If it wasn't, they wouldn't, even without interference.
"But I didn't want that." Benjamin's voice dropped as he squeezed her hand. "I wanted to win your heart bit by bit and then be happily together with you, just like now."
Daphne instinctively looked at him.
Their eyes met, and some emotions were conveyed to her.
"But..." Daphne was still on the fence.
"Let me give you another example," Benjamin continued.
Daphne nodded. "Okay."
"In a real one-on-one shooting game, do you think it's better for them to rely on their own skills to determine the winner, or for one side to buy a special skill to win?" Benjamin slowly led Daphne astray.
Daphne blurted out without hesitation, "Of course, it's better to rely on their own skills. Buying special skills is cheating."
"If you help Emma, you're helping her cheat," Benjamin said, leading her to the final step. "It would ruin the fairness of her game with Emery."
Daphne thought about it and felt something was off, but she couldn't pinpoint it.
"Of course, if you still want to help, I won't stop you," Benjamin said. "But even if Emma wins, it won't be an honorable victory."
"Wait!" Daphne suddenly realized.
Benjamin raised an eyebrow, waiting for her to continue.
Daphne's expression was serious as she calmly analyzed, "Emery also called someone to chase Emma. He's already cheating."
"He called the McPherson family's bodyguards. From a game perspective, that's his built-in equipment," Benjamin continued to deceive her. "You and Emma are friends, but your hacking skills are unparalleled, which counts as a special skill."
"Are you messing with me?" Daphne still felt something was wrong.
Benjamin looked innocent, acting more convincingly than anyone. "If I were messing with you, I wouldn't have analyzed so much."
It made a lot of sense, but Daphne still felt something was off.
"Give me the phone. I'll ask Emma," she said, holding out her hand for the phone. She still cared about Emma. "Let's see what she says."
This wasn't a real game. Daphne had learned so many skills to help herself and her friends.
It didn't make sense for her skills to be useless when her friends needed them.
Benjamin's eyes deepened. He hadn't expected Daphne to catch on.
It seemed the saying that pregnancy made people stupid was incorrect. Although Daphne was sometimes a bit slow and not as quick as before, her mind was still sharp.
"My phone," Daphne repeated.
Benjamin took out the phone and handed it to her.
At the same time, he also took out his own phone and secretly called Emma.
To prevent Daphne from hearing the sound when the call connected, Benjamin deliberately muted his phone and put it in his pocket.
