Chapter 555 Getting into Trouble
In just a couple of days, they moved in together. Talk about moving fast.
"That's none of your business," Elara snapped, trying to keep Mark from spilling too much to Jesse. "Just enjoy your honeymoon with your wife."
Mark glanced at his wife, who was chilling on the couch watching TV, and decided to drop the gossip.
After hanging up, Elara started her nightly routine, washing her face and putting on a face mask.
For the next few days, she mostly stayed home, only stepping out to grab some essentials. She hadn't packed much when she moved, so she needed a few things.
On Tuesday, Elara made plans to go shopping with a friend.
They hit the stores for a bit, and Elara picked up some new outfits, both for herself and Jesse. When they got tired, they found a spot to eat.
Just as they sat down and hadn't even ordered, an unwelcome guest showed up.
It was Willie Reed, the rich kid Elara had gone on a blind date with before.
"Well, if it isn't Ms. Gonzalez?" Willie laughed, flanked by his buddies, all with smirks on their faces. "Out for a meal?"
Elara couldn't be bothered to respond.
Willie plopped down next to her, pushing her towards the window. "Don't be so frosty! We've had a meal together, you know."
"Move," Elara said icily, clearly not in the mood for him.
"What if I don't?" Willie shot back, looking for trouble.
Elara glared at him.
Willie crossed his legs and leaned back. "I heard you haven't been staying at home lately."
"What's it to you?" Elara found Willie repulsive. "If you don't leave, I'll call security."
"Go ahead, call them. If anyone pays attention to you, I'll admit defeat," Willie retorted.
Elara paused, quickly realizing that this restaurant was probably owned by Willie or his friends.
How annoying.
"I don't get it. What's so bad about me that you rejected the marriage alliance between our families?" Willie leaned in closer, his demeanor totally inappropriate.
Elara lost her appetite. She grabbed her bag, ready to leave with her friend.
She stared at Willie, who was blocking her way, and said, "Move."
"What if I don't?" Willie replied, still being a jerk.
Elara kicked him hard, making Willie stumble and fall.
Being a spoiled brat, Willie couldn't handle it. He immediately told his friends, "Stop her!"
At his command, his friends surrounded Elara and her friend.
Elara looked around, her expression unchanged. "What do you want?"
"No one kicks me and gets away with it," Willie sneered.
"Should I call your dad now?" Elara dared to kick him because she knew what kind of person Willie's father, Harold Reed, was. She looked at Willie with disdain. "If he finds out you're still acting like this, he probably won't let you take over the company."
"How dare you!" Willie was furious.
"I only agreed to that blind date because of the friendship between our dads," Elara said, her tone completely different from when she was with Jesse. "Keep this up, and I'll tell your dad everything you've been up to."
Willie snorted, "You wouldn't dare."
"Try me," Elara replied calmly.
Willie's fists clenched tightly.
Elara gave him a look, pushed him aside with her bag, and walked out of the restaurant.
"Willie, should we stop her?"
"She's too arrogant."
"Don't worry about it. You're the only son in your family; inheriting the business is just a matter of time."
"Exactly!"
Willie's friends chimed in.
"Shut up!" Willie snapped.
Everyone fell silent, not daring to speak.
"Follow her," Willie ordered, still fuming. While he couldn't directly bully Elara, he could still make her life difficult. "Find out where she's staying."
"Got it," they all agreed.
Elara's mood for shopping was ruined.
She knew Willie wasn't very capable but had a terrible temper.
But if she hadn't acted that way, Willie would have only escalated things, possibly causing more trouble in the restaurant.
Thinking about this, Elara rubbed her temples, trying to calm herself.
After lunch, she and her friend went their separate ways.
Elara was about to drive home when she was stopped at the parking lot exit.
A group of men in black, holding sticks, surrounded her car. They were all tall and intimidating.
In that moment, Elara's palms began to sweat.
Someone knocked on her car window.
She looked up to see Ralph Cook, one of Willie's cronies, standing by her window, looking particularly menacing. Ralph said, "Ms. Gonzalez, care to step out and chat?"
Elara swallowed hard and quickly started her car, intending to drive away.
Did they think she was stupid?
A stick suddenly struck Elara's window, startling her and making her heart race.
"Get out!" Ralph shouted, his face full of malice, holding the stick against her now-cracked window.
Elara's hand fumbled for her phone, trying to call Jesse.
But Ralph smashed the window, sending glass everywhere.
Elara screamed instinctively.
"Get out!" Ralph pointed the stick at her.
Elara tried to calm her racing heart and forced herself to talk to Ralph, "Did Willie order you?"
"He didn't need to," Ralph responded, clearly unaware of the family connection between Elara and Willie. "You embarrassed Willie in public, so I'm here to teach you a lesson."
In reality, Ralph was just taking out his frustration. Willie's anger from Elara's words had been directed at those around him, and Ralph, needing Willie's help, couldn't retaliate and instead targeted Elara.
Elara was just unlucky this time.
"What do you want?" Elara asked.
"Come with me to apologize to Willie and make him happy!" Ralph answered, trying to please Willie. "Do as I say, or I'll break you."
"Fine," Elara knew resistance was futile. "Lead the way."
Elara got out of the car. In this situation, if she didn't comply, Ralph might actually hit her.
