Chapter 349 Some Things You Had to Try to Find Out.
"Hey, Daphne." Charles waved his hand in front of her, sounding like a teenager.
Daphne snapped back. "You play first. I'll take you over this afternoon."
Charles nodded."Okay."
Back in her room, Charles called Mark to make evening plans. He needed to be clear about meeting Daphne's friends.
He called twice, but Mark's phone was off.
Charles looked up Mark's info, found his family's number, and called.
Mark's dad answered. Hearing it was Mark's boss, he scolded, "Why's your phone off? Mr. Lancelot's trying to reach you."
Mark was watching a documentary. "Mr. Lancelot?"
"Mr. Lancelot called?" Mark's dad handed him the phone, looking stern. "Answer it."
Mark, nervous, took the phone, palms sweaty. "Mr. Lancelot."
Charles asked, "Phone off?"
Mark stammered, "It broke. Sent it for repair yesterday."
Charles replied, "Should I ask your dad?"
Mark thought he could be reckless since Charles had amnesia. But Charles still had a firm grip on things.
"No need." Mark knew his lie was exposed. "What do you need?"
"Last chance. Be at Gedser by 5 PM today,", Charles ordered. "Handle tonight well, and I won't hold this against you. Mess up, and we'll settle everything."
"What is it?" Mark was anxious.
"I'll tell you when you get here," Charles said, then hung up.
Mark didn't delay. He returned the phone to his dad, booked a flight, and packed quickly.
Mark arrived at Gedser Airport at 5 PM.
He informed Charles, who then told him the plan.
Mark paused, questioning his life choices. "Mr. Lancelot, are you sure?"
"Yes," Charles confirmed.
"Aren't you afraid of being rejected?" Mark asked.
Charles thought, 'Can Mark be any more tactless?'
Mark, risking a pay cut, spoke the truth. "Ms. Murphy isn't interested in you. A public confession will just embarrass you."
"This is none of your business," Charles snapped. "Just do what I told you."
Mark didn't understand but agreed. He hoped Charles wouldn't take out his anger on him if the confession failed.
At 6 PM, Daphne took Charles to meet Kevin and the others.
Kevin and Benjamin were already in the private room, enjoying the nice lighting.
Despite being a bit intimidated by Benjamin, Kevin started the conversation. "So, Benjamin, how's it going with Daphne? Did meeting the parents go well?"
"Smoothly," Benjamin said, rubbing his wine glass, his fingers looking quite attractive.
"And the relationship?" Kevin pressed.
"Stagnant," Benjamin replied.
Kevin, Evan, and Emma were all puzzled.
Emma was surprised. "Are you serious?"
"She's not interested in love right now and is pretty slow with these things," Benjamin explained. "So, no progress."
"You better not let Charles get ahead of you," Emma warned.
Benjamin didn't respond, lost in thought.
Daphne had mentioned Charles' mental state reverting to that of a seventeen-year-old. Benjamin had thought Charles would keep pretending to be a five-year-old.
Evan called out, "Benjamin."
"Yeah?" Benjamin replied.
"You should confess to Daphne," Evan suggested.
Emma and Kevin both looked at him.
Benjamin paused, raising an eyebrow lazily. "If she's not interested, I can't just rush in."
Knowing Daphne, if he confessed and she wasn't into it, she'd probably avoid him.
"If you don't make a move, she might stay like this forever," Evan analyzed. "Do you want to stay stagnant with her forever?"
Benjamin didn't respond, deep in thought.
"When Daphne got married, it wasn't because she was in love; it was because Charles acted quickly," Evan continued. "If you were Charles back then, would you have proposed to Daphne directly?"
Benjamin's first reaction was "no."
To him, marriage was sacred. He wouldn't propose without knowing she liked him.
"Exactly," Emma said. "None of us expected her to have a quick marriage."
"Logically, Daphne is the least likely among us to have a quick marriage," Kevin added. "But she did."
Their discussion started to sway Benjamin.
He sat there, his eyes deep and unreadable.
Evan adjusted his glasses. "Matters of the heart can't be judged by common sense. Even the person involved doesn't know what they'll decide until that moment."
"Let alone us," Evan added.
Benjamin took it all in, looking at the three of them. "What if she runs away and hides?"
"I'll help you find her!" Kevin said enthusiastically.
Evan smiled, exuding a scholarly air. "Count me in."
"And me," Emma chimed in.
Hearing this, Benjamin's lips curved into a slight smile, his chiseled face looking like a masterpiece.
He looked at each of them and finally said, "Alright, I'll confess."
Evan was right; matters of the heart couldn't be judged by Daphne's usual personality.
Until you took that step, you never knew if she would really run away and hide. Some things, you just had to try to know.
