Chapter 698 The Price Was Too Low

Diana checked her messages while waiting at the traffic light and replied: [Thank you.]

She knew Caspian was a very twisted person, always had been since childhood.

Take his childhood, for example. There were things Caspian clearly cared about and wanted, but he would never admit it or express it.

Diana didn't understand why he was like this at that time. If people liked something or wanted something, shouldn't they just say it outright? But now she understood. Because of his family background, he became sensitive to many things.

This sensitivity and childhood trauma were never fully healed later on.

So Caspian habitually hid his true feelings.

For the next two days, Diana went to work as usual. Except for wandering in front of Caspian before and after work, she treated herself just like any other employee.

It was still afternoon and not yet time to get off work.

Caspian called someone from the secretarial department to attend a dinner party.

In the past, when he needed a female companion for business dinners, he would randomly pick someone from the secretarial department who was available.

When Diana heard about this, she immediately went to Caspian's office, as lively and earnest as ever. "I heard you're looking for a female companion?"

Caspian's gaze fell on her, but he didn't say anything.

"As your personal secretary, I think this job should be mine." Diana didn't even ask him, she just stated her own thoughts. "Other people probably have things to do after work. It doesn't seem right to use their free time."

Caspian refused, "This has nothing to do with you."

"As a member of the secretarial department, it does have something to do with me." Diana firmly fought for her rights.

At that moment, Alvin walked in and cleared his throat. "I think Diana is right."

Caspian's displeased gaze fell on Alvin.

"I just asked around in the secretarial department, and it seems like they all have things to do tonight and can't get out of it," Alvin reported proactively.

Caspian frowned slightly. "Everyone?"

Alvin nodded. "Everyone."

Caspian's gaze instinctively fell on Diana. His intuition told him this definitely had something to do with her.

Over the years, whenever they needed to attend a dinner party, they would always come to a consensus on their own.

Those who attended would receive a company subsidy.

There was no reason for them to give this up.

"Call them all over," Caspian instructed.

Alvin obediently complied, "Yes."

"I'm good-looking, my height matches yours, and I have no problem with business communication." Diana walked over and leaned on his desk, asking very seriously, "Why won't you let me go to the dinner party with you?"

"A personal secretary only handles my personal affairs. Other matters have nothing to do with you," Caspian said in an official tone.

She had gone to such lengths, yet Caspian was still so stubborn.

Just as this thought crossed her mind, Alvin brought in the three female secretaries from the secretarial department.

The three of them were visibly nervous, and when they looked at Caspian, they were even more guilty. "Mr. Garcia."

"Each of you, tell me what you have to do today." Caspian put down his pen, crossed his hands on the desk, and looked at them with a strong presence. "Do not lie."

"My child is sick, and my family isn't good at taking care of them," the first one said, half-truthfully. "I want to go home early to check on things."

The second one rubbed her stomach. "My period just started, and my stomach hurts on the first day."

The third one stated, "I have a stomachache."

"Alvin," Caspian suddenly spoke.

Alvin stepped forward instinctively.

Caspian glanced at the second and third women and instructed, "Take these two to the hospital for a check-up. I'll cover the costs."

The second woman quickly said, "No need for a check-up. I'll be fine after taking some medicine and waiting a few hours."

"Me too." the third woman was also very nervous. "I have medicine at home. I'll be fine after taking it."

"A check-up would be better," Caspian said slowly. "You've both been dedicated to the company for years. We can't have you working while sick."

The two women were very flustered. "Really, it's nothing."

"Alvin." Caspian didn't listen to them.

Alvin, thinking Caspian genuinely cared about them, calmly walked over and said, "Ladies, please."

The two women didn't move an inch.

Just as Alvin was about to speak again, the secretary with the stomachache spoke up, "Mr. Garcia, I was wrong!"

"I was wrong too!" the other one quickly followed.

Caspian knew the truth but continued the act. "What's wrong with being sick?"

"We shouldn't have taken Diana's money and refused to go to the dinner party with you," the secretary with the stomachache confessed, glancing at Diana. "And we shouldn't have lied to you."

The second one nodded. "Yes."

Caspian's gaze fell on Diana, a hint of coldness in his clear face. "So you're saying Diana bribed you to lie."

"Yes." the two women were very guilty.

Initially, they had a neutral attitude towards Diana.

But Diana offered a high price, and for the money, they agreed to her request.

In hindsight, they realized they shouldn't have taken the money.

"Diana, explain yourself." Caspian confirmed his suspicion.

"Just as they said, I wanted to go to the dinner party with you, so I bribed them," Diana admitted openly. It wasn't illegal, after all. "But it seems my offer was not enough."

The two women lowered their heads, not daring to look at Diana.

They felt guilty for taking the money but not fulfilling the task.

"You two go discuss who will go to the dinner party with me and give me an answer in five minutes," Caspian told the two secretaries directly.

His attitude made it clear he wasn't giving Diana any chance.

Diana still tried to fight for herself. "Won't you reconsider me?"

"Work's over," Caspian indirectly answered her. "You should go home and have dinner with Charles, he's waiting for you."

Seeing Caspian's firm attitude, Diana didn't continue to argue. She went back to her office, grabbed her bag, and left.

She had anticipated this outcome from the start. There were other reasons she still argued with him.

When Charles saw Diana return, he had dinner served and asked while she was washing her hands, "Did Caspian refuse?"

"He did, and very thoroughly." Diana dried her hands and sat down at the dining table, smiling. "But this way, he shouldn't suspect that we arranged for those people to spread the news."
