Chapter 628 I Have to Protect Them

"It's got nothing to do with me. I just wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any trouble later," Gilbert said. "I don't want to piss off Daphne and Benjamin."

Though Daphne and Benjamin might seem chill about most things, crossing their line would make them come at you hard. Gilbert knew he couldn't handle that.

"Don't worry, you won't piss them off," Charles reassured him.

Meanwhile, upstairs, Louis and Diana were hanging out in a room with Lon and Noe.

Still curious about Charles downstairs, Diana asked, "Lon, is Charles your relative?"

"I don't know. I just got back home recently," Lon replied honestly, without a hint of suspicion. "He's probably a friend of Dad's. He's been here for a bit."

"Okay." Diana nodded, not thinking much more about it.

After Noe finished tidying up, he happily joined them to play in the new playground out back.

Louis, on the other hand, wasn't into playing. He borrowed a book from Noe and found a spot nearby to read.

Seeing everyone having fun, Charles and Gilbert wandered over too. It was undeniable that Charles, with his natural charm and height, stood out even next to Gilbert.

As soon as Charles showed up, Diana's eyes lit up, and she greeted him excitedly, "Charles!"

Charles smiled back at her.

"Want to play with us?" Diana hopped off the swing and ran over. "How about I push you on the swing?"

Louis, Lon, and Noe all paused what they were doing.

Diana was everyone's favorite. Whenever she was on the swing, it was usually electric and automatic, or Lon or Louis would push her. This was the first time she'd offered to push someone else.

"Why don't you sit, and I'll give you a push," Charles said as he walked over, his perfect features softening with a gentle smile. No one had ever seen him like this.

For the whole afternoon, Diana played with Charles.

At first, Louis was worried Charles might be a good-looking bad guy, but after watching for a while, he saw that Charles was super attentive and patient with Diana, just like Benjamin and Daphne. Realizing Charles wouldn't harm Diana, Louis went back to his book.

Charles and Diana had a blast together the entire afternoon. Seeing how happy Diana was, Lon wanted to invite her to join other activities but couldn't bring himself to interrupt her joy. So, while Diana remained cheerful and lively, Lon and Noe played half-heartedly.

Gilbert watched this scene and said to Lon with a hint of sadness, "Without Diana, you guys can't have fun?"

Lon nodded honestly.

Diana was their sunshine, her infectious energy and happiness lighting up everyone around her, drawing them into spontaneous play and laughter. Without her, their lives returned to calm; they still played, but without that carefree joy.

"Dad," Lon said, biting his lip as a question popped into his head.

Gilbert turned his attention back to him.

"Can I always go to the same school as Diana?" Lon asked, a bit hopeful. "I want to protect her and keep her happy."

Most importantly, Lon didn't want another Eddy situation. The last time Diana played with Eddy, she didn't think about him at all.

"That depends on whether Diana wants to go to the same school as you," Gilbert said, ruffling Lon's hair. "You're older than her. You'll hit elementary, middle, high school, and college before her."

Lon thought for a moment and asked, "Can I wait for her?"

"No," Gilbert said without hesitation.

Lon hung his head, looking a bit down.

Seeing his expression, Gilbert felt a pang of emotion but brushed it off, thinking it was just the bond between playmates.

At that moment, Gilbert didn't realize that Lon had made up his mind to protect Diana's happiness from a young age. Even later, when Diana found someone she truly liked, Lon never gave up.

"Lon, Louis, Gilbert," Diana called out, noticing their gloomy faces. "Let's play a game together."

Lon immediately ran over.

Diana went to pull Louis, "Louis, come on."

"No."

"Come on, let's play a game." Diana, sweaty from playing, was still full of energy.

Louis instinctively wanted to refuse.

Diana pouted. "Come on, I know you love me the most!"

"What else can you do besides pout?" Louis had already agreed in his heart.

Diana smiled, innocent and lively, "I can love Louis, love Mom and Dad."

"Just this once," Louis said.

"Okay," Diana agreed.

In fact, faced with Diana's pouting, Louis broke his own rules time and again because he truly treated Diana like a treasure.

Moments later, the game officially began. The game was for Gilbert to catch the kids while Charles protected them from being caught.

Gilbert and Charles, two usually serious men, couldn't resist Diana's cuteness and agreed to the game. While Gilbert tried to catch the four kids, Charles diligently protected them.

After half an hour, Gilbert hadn't managed to catch a single one.

Sweating and puzzled, Gilbert stopped and looked at Charles. "Why are you taking this game so seriously?"

"It's a game to us, but to the kids, they don't want to be caught," Charles said, feeling Diana's grip on his shirt. His pleasant voice was calm and deliberate. "I have to protect them."

"Charles is amazing!" Diana praised happily.

Charles ruffled her hair. "Diana is great too."

Diana tilted her head and smiled.

Seeing Diana all sweaty, Charles took a tissue from his pocket and wiped her forehead. Then he said to her and Louis, "I had new clothes prepared for you. Go change later. Sweating so much could cause you to catch a cold."
