Chapter 619 Have You Been Happy These Years?

"Did you see how he acted just now? Do you think I can speak peacefully?" Dennis was all fired up, showing no remorse.

"Don't argue with Dennis," Selene tried to calm Austin down. "Daisy's just an actress. Listen to us, and don't get tangled up with her. We'll find you a proper woman to marry."

"Mom." Austin's eyes were full of emotion.

Selene still looked worried. "What's wrong?"

Austin asked, "Have you been happy all these years?"

Selene was taken aback. "What?"

"You gave up your career to be a full-time housewife, letting Dad run your life," Austin finally let out what he'd been holding in. "You look down on her for being an actress, but have you forgotten you once dreamed of being one too?"

Selene was stunned.

Austin went on, "Because Dad didn't like it, you never got the chance to act."

"That's all in the past," Selene said, shaking off her moment of shock. "You should talk to your dad properly."

"There's nothing to talk about. I have someone I love and a child," Austin made his stance clear. "I can't love anyone else, and I won't be a pawn in an arranged marriage."

"How dare you say that!" Dennis exploded with anger.

"I'm just speaking my mind," Austin's temper flared, matching Dennis's. "Someone here isn't very capable but has a huge temper."

Dennis raised his hand to hit Austin again.

This time, Austin caught it.

He grabbed Dennis's arm and spoke harshly, "The Lancelot Group and the Murphy Group are so successful. Do Hayden and Alexander have your temper? Do they force their kids into arranged marriages and hit them?"

"You brat!" Dennis was livid.

"You want me to make the Hill Group successful. I learned from Charles and achieved your goals," Austin said bluntly. "And what was the result?"

"If you like them so much, why don't you be their son?" Dennis was beyond angry.

"Don't change the subject," Austin wasn't letting it go. "Today, I'm making it clear. If you keep stopping me from being with Daisy and bothering her and Molly, I'll destroy the Hill Group."

Dennis's eyes widened in fury. "How dare you!"

"Watch me," Austin stood firm, unyielding.

Dennis's chest heaved with rage.

Selene stood there, not knowing what to say. Hearing Austin compare the Lancelot Group and the Murphy Group, she couldn't help but think of every event where Hayden, Charles's father, was always so attentive and gentle with his wife, Laura.

Unlike Hayden, who would lovingly take Laura to eat as soon as she mentioned being hungry, Dennis didn't care when Selene felt cold or hungry. He would just tell her to wait.

Selene, being a woman, naturally longed for her husband to love her properly.

Seeing her hesitation, Austin turned to Selene with a softer tone. "Mom, you initially liked Daisy. You were the one who brought us together. Why don't you like her now?"

Selene hesitated, her mind racing. She had indeed liked Daisy at first, seeing her as a kind and suitable match for Austin. But under Dennis's influence, she had started to question her own judgment.

"Do you know her parents?" Selene asked, trying to stay calm.

She hadn't thought much about it at first, but later events had shaped her opinion. Plus, someone had mentioned Daisy had an improper relationship with the director and that Molly might not even be Austin's child. When Selene found out Daisy had given birth, she wanted to take Molly for a paternity test. If Molly was Austin's, they'd take her away; if not, they'd return her to Daisy.

But Daphne had protected Daisy and Molly too well, and Selene never got the chance.

"I know everything about Daisy, and I can handle it," Austin reassured Selene. "She's a really good woman."

"But she's in the entertainment industry..." Selene was still hesitant.

Having heard many negative things, she had developed a bias against the entertainment industry.

Austin narrowed his eyes, sensing something. "Did Kaitlyn say something to you?"

Selene paused, surprised. Though she had initially been neutral about Daisy, many conversations with Kaitlyn had unconsciously led her to develop a bias against Daisy, resulting in the current situation.

"Her words aren't trustworthy," Austin said, not revealing their past. "She told me Daisy wasn't fit for pregnancy and that it would endanger her life, which led me to make many mistakes."

Selene remained silent.

Austin continued, "Mom, I hope you can support us."

"Don't even think about it," Dennis suddenly interjected, still furious.

"Give me a couple of days to think," Selene had already softened.

Thinking carefully, Selene realized she had never truly understood Daisy. The upper-class circle was complicated, and forming an opinion based on others' gossip seemed unfair. She realized that over the years, she had become quite harsh.

"Alright," Austin agreed. "I'll stay home for a few days. You can ask me anything about Daisy you're unsure about. If you think Daisy has any flaws, tell me, and I'll help you understand her better."

Selene agreed.

Dennis watched their conversation, feeling conflicted.

That night, Selene talked to Dennis. He insisted she should follow his arrangements, easily losing his temper with Selene. In the past, Selene had always endured it, feeling wronged, but that night she argued back.

"If you agree to Austin and Daisy's marriage, don't stay in this house," Dennis snapped.

"Then I won't stay," Selene's temper flared, suddenly like a different person. "Tomorrow, I'll move to Gedser with Austin, and we'll live with Daisy and Molly!"

Dennis, seeing her seriousness, got angry. "How dare you!"

"Watch me," Selene retorted.

"Do you think Daisy will welcome you?" Dennis felt Selene was deceived by Austin. "Have you forgotten how you spoke to Molly in front of Daisy in Gedser? Do you think Austin will forgive you and Daisy will not mind?"

Selene paused, recalling her harsh words, feeling a surge of guilt. Over the years, she was surrounded by harsh people, with every social gathering involving gossip and unkind remarks. Inevitably, being in such a circle for so long had influenced her.
