Chapter 288 Daphne Is Taking You Home

Jesse took his work seriously. HorizonTech Group meant the world to him. He wanted to do everything right so Daphne could be well-off.

In half an hour, Jesse wrapped up his report smoothly.

As he was about to leave, Daphne called out, "Jesse, hold on a sec."

Jesse stopped.

"What did you mean when you texted me yesterday about someone having ulterior motives towards me?" Daphne asked bluntly.

Jesse hesitated. Daphne didn't press him.

"People in the company are talking about you and Benjamin," Jesse rephrased.

"Benjamin?" Daphne was surprised.

"Ms. Murphy," Jesse asked curiously, "Are you and Benjamin dating? You've been going out with him for business lately, and you haven't called me."

He used to pick her up and drop her off every day, but now she drove herself. As the boss, she should be driven, not driving herself.

"Are you worried I'll value Benjamin more than you?" Daphne saw a hint of emotion on his usually calm face and asked tentatively.

Jesse didn't speak, but his expression said it all.

Daphne still had a special regard for Jesse. She stood up, poured him a glass of water, and reassured him, "Don't worry. As long as you want, you'll always be my special assistant. I only take Benjamin out to help him get familiar with society and the market."

There were many things she still wanted to explain to Benjamin personally. Although Jesse was very capable, he didn't know much about Benjamin's past. Given Benjamin's personality, there were some things he wouldn't discuss with Jesse. So, it was better for her to take Benjamin out for a while. Once Benjamin was fully familiar, she wouldn't have to worry as much.

"As for the rumors, they're completely baseless," Daphne explained. "Benjamin and I are just friends."

Jesse heard this, and so did Benjamin, who was about to come in to discuss something. He stood outside the door, his eyes showing no surprise. He knew Daphne well. After her relationship with Charles, she had become emotionally distant, or rather, she had no interest in relationships at all. He wasn't in a hurry. He would prepare everything; whenever she was ready, he could marry her.

Thinking of this, he raised his hand and knocked on her office door.

Jesse opened the door and paused when he saw Benjamin. Benjamin nodded slightly in greeting, then walked towards Daphne with the documents in his hand, asking her to sign them. Throughout the process, he remained completely natural, unaffected by what he had just heard.

Seeing this, Jesse felt a pang of doubt. Had he really overthought things?

After the documents were signed, Benjamin left. Jesse also left after finishing his report.

Daphne, temporarily free from work, sat in her chair, thinking about Jesse. With Jesse's current abilities and connections, starting and running a company would be very easy. She had suggested it to him before, but he had refused, saying he only wanted to be her special assistant, not a boss.

Someone with ability, money, and connections who didn't want to be a boss? She had only ever seen Jesse like this in the industry.

Time always flew.

In the hustle and bustle, more than two months flew by.

During that time, Charles's external injuries healed completely, and he regained consciousness.

Daphne had been asking Brian about Charles's condition, but Brian always said it was still unstable and that they'd talk when things settled down.

One evening, Daphne had just gotten home from work when she got a call from Hayden. As usual, they talked about Charles.

"How's Charles doing?" Hayden asked lightly, not wanting to pressure her.

Daphne answered honestly, "Brian says his condition is still unstable. He'll let me know when it stabilizes."

"Marcus just asked when Charles would be back for Christmas this year," Hayden mentioned. "If he doesn't recover by then, I might need you to help me put on a show."

"Okay," Daphne agreed.

After discussing a few other things, Hayden hung up.

Daphne sat on the sofa, holding her phone, feeling particularly heavy and conflicted.

After much thought, she decided to call Brian.

Brian was talking to Charles when he saw her call. His expression turned complicated as he walked to the window to answer, "Ms. Murphy."

"How's Charles doing?" Daphne asked.

Brian replied, "His condition is still unstable."

"I need to know the details," Daphne insisted.

Brian glanced at the silent Charles, feeling a headache coming on. "I suggest you don't know."

"What's wrong with him?" Daphne sensed something was off.

Brian didn't speak.

Charles's situation was hard to describe as either good or bad. But one thing was certain: keeping Charles here any longer was bad for both him and the base.

Daphne's heart sank when she didn't hear his voice, fearing something had happened. "Brian."

"You should come see for yourself," Brian said before hanging up.

Daphne didn't hesitate, grabbing her phone and car keys before heading out.

As for Brian, he put his phone in his pocket and approached Charles, smiling warmly. "Daphne will come to take you home soon. Are you happy?"

"Your smile makes me suspect you're selling me," Charles's deep eyes stared at him, lacking their usual coldness and instead showing a child's purity.

"How could that be?" Brian kept smiling. "Am I that kind of person?"

Charles nodded. "You are."

Brian was helpless. Indeed, he never liked dealing with Charles.

Before the accident, Charles was already difficult to handle. Now, with his amnesia and mental regression to a five-year-old, he could still infuriate him.

He wasn't suited to stay with him for long!

At nine o'clock sharp, Daphne arrived at the base.

Brian had been waiting outside and greeted her with a smile. "Ms. Murphy, you're here."

"Where's Charles?" Daphne asked.

"He's inside," Brian replied.

"What's wrong with him?" she pressed.

"Nothing serious." Brian took out a document from behind his back and handed it to her. "If you want to see him, you need to sign this first."

Daphne took it and quickly scanned the two short pages.

There were two bolded points.

First, Daphne must take Charles away once she saw him.

Second, any losses Brian incurred due to Charles would be borne by the person taking Charles, including but not limited to damages caused by Charles and the costs of unfulfilled promises made to Charles.
