Chapter 394 The Missed Person is Missed
In the end, it was all about him not trusting her enough; totally his bad.
"So, why are you still sticking around as my assistant?" Charles asked, trying to keep it cool but clearly mixed up inside.
"First off, the pay's great. Second, you treat me well," Mark shot back, keeping it real. "You might suck at relationships, but you're solid with your employees."
Charles went quiet, lips tight.
"Like, remember that project you gave me ages ago?" Mark said, getting animated. "I totally botched it, and instead of chewing me out, you helped fix it."
That screw-up cost the company a ton, like hundreds of thousands. Maybe it was chump change to Charles, but for Mark, who'd only been there a year, it was a massive deal.
Charles just said, "That's 'cause you're worth more than that."
That was Mark's only big mess-up since he joined, but it wasn't even a real mistake. He just lacked confidence, making him too careful and stiff at work.
Luckily, after that, Mark had a lightbulb moment and started handling things like a pro, barely needing Charles to step in.
"Mr. Lancelot," Mark said slowly, feeling the chit-chat was done. "I think Ms. Murphy was spot on today. You gotta move forward, whether it's in love or work."
Charles went silent. Everyone told him to move on, but how could he? Feelings aren't like projects; you can't just drop them whenever.
"Missed chances are just that—missed," Mark said, hoping both Daphne and Charles could find their own happiness. "Staying put won't bring them back."
"I know," Charles replied, voice rough.
Mark had more to say but didn't want to push Charles too far, making him stop eating and drinking like before, so he held back.
After a long pause, Charles looked out the window and said slowly, "I'll give up when her kid starts kindergarten."
He needed to be sure Benjamin was really good to Daphne.
Some guys change after marriage, some cheat when their partner's pregnant, and others start hating their wives after childbirth because of body changes.
He needed to be sure Daphne was truly happy before he could chill.
Mark was floored. Kindergarten? Nine months of pregnancy, three years till kindergarten. Even if they got hitched and had a kid now, that's still about four years!
Charles would be twenty-eight this October. Twenty-eight plus four equals thirty-two.
At thirty-two, the Lancelot family elders should be cool with it, right?
"Mr. Charles Lancelot, if you're really gonna wait till Ms. Murphy's kid starts kindergarten to give up, you should let Mr. Rex Lancelot go on blind dates when you go back this year," Mark suggested, knowing the Lancelot family elders well. "Otherwise, Mrs. Lancelot and the others will be all over you."
Laura, Marcus, and the rest were super into Daphne.
Once they knew Daphne was with Benjamin, Charles would definitely be the one catching all the heat at home. That way, Charles would get all sorts of hassle!
Charles paused, his tired eyes showing a flicker of something. After a moment of deep thought, he agreed, "Alright."
Rex wasn't getting any younger; he should get hitched.
Meanwhile, Rex, who was chilling outside, suddenly felt a shiver down his spine. He rubbed his neck a couple of times, then went back to catching waves in the sunny sea, having a blast.
After Charles left, Daphne checked the room he had stayed in to see if Mark had left anything behind.
After searching around and confirming everything was taken, she headed back to her room.
As soon as she walked in, Benjamin pulled her into his arms.
Daphne blinked, a bit confused, wondering if he had overheard the earlier convo. "Do you care about what I said to Charles?" she asked.
"Nah," Benjamin, who loved holding her, replied softly. "I just think you got something wrong."
Daphne thought back but couldn't recall anything she had said wrong.
So she asked, "What d'ya mean?"
"First love," Benjamin said seriously.
Daphne was puzzled.
Her first love was indeed Charles. She had never dated or even thought about it before him.
"Take out your phone and search for the meaning of 'first love,'" Benjamin suggested, feeling her fluttering eyelashes like little brushes tickling his heart. "See what the internet says."
Daphne searched while still in his arms. So when she saw the answer, Benjamin saw it too.
"You and Charles had a flash marriage. There was no dating involved," Benjamin said half-jokingly, his eyes filled only with her. "I'm your first love."
Benjamin gently pinched her fair cheek. "Got it?"
Daphne was a bit dazed.
Benjamin lowered his head and kissed her.
Daphne's eyes remained open, filled with confusion. Why did he kiss her out of the blue?
Benjamin gave her a light peck on the lips before pulling away, gently ruffling her hair with patience and tenderness.
Daphne always felt this side of Benjamin was unreal, even though he had done this many times.
"Benjamin," she called.
"Yeah?"
"If you keep training Emma and the others, will you train me too?" Daphne asked.
"What do you think?" Benjamin retorted.
"Probably not," Daphne guessed. "I'm your girlfriend."
Benjamin's lips curved into a smile as he whispered in her ear, his deep, lazy voice tinged with allure, "Nice dream. Next time, make it even wilder."
Daphne knew all his tenderness was just a facade.
Seeing her slightly frustrated expression, Benjamin's smile grew wider.
As his girlfriend, Daphne was meant to be pampered by him. However, if she wanted to participate in those dangerous missions, he would train her strictly. She would be no exception as strict training was for survival. Missions were unpredictable, and even if he was there, he couldn't always protect her. After all, missions weren't like TV dramas.
Seeing his lingering smile, Daphne had a sudden thought. She stood on tiptoe and planted a kiss on his lips in retaliation.
Benjamin was momentarily stunned by the kiss. By the time he regained his composure, Daphne was already making a bold move to seduce him. He quickly took control, pulling her into his arms.
Daphne clearly felt the atmosphere between them change.
Just as the atmosphere reached its peak, she quickly escaped from his embrace and slipped into another room, closing the door behind her.
She ran so fast that even Benjamin couldn't stop her.
After all, he never expected her to just run away.
Her fresh, clean scent still lingered on his lips, and his dark eyes were filled with unspent desire.
