Chapter 597 Three Annoying People
"Why aren't you saying anything?" Elara asked.
"You used to be really nice to me, and I never forgot that," Jesse said, trying to hide the fact he was lying. "To me, you're someone special."
"When did you start liking me?" Elara pressed.
Jesse glanced at her and silently started the car.
Elara was puzzled. What was going on?
"Do you want the truth or a lie?" Jesse asked after driving off.
"Of course, the truth," Elara replied naturally, her face pure and sincere. "What's the point of a lie?"
"After you confessed to me," Jesse admitted.
Before Elara confessed to Jesse, he had never thought about liking or marrying someone, nor had he delved deeply into his special feelings for Elara.
Elara wasn't surprised, just curious. "Then why did you say in the booth that you liked me a long time ago?"
"They were really mean to you. If they knew you were the one who liked and pursued me, they would've said some nasty things," Jesse thought of her conversation with Evelyn in the restroom and spoke naturally. "I didn't want them to talk about you."
Even though this was a society of gender equality, in many situations, girls still faced some disadvantages.
A girl who had a long-time crush and then successfully pursued the person she liked could only have been empathized with by those who had also had a crush. Most people who found it romantic and gave their blessings were also girls.
Jesse hoped everything would be good for Elara and that she wouldn't be subjected to others' gossip.
Elara felt warm inside, her face glowing with happiness.
Jesse thought about the previous events. "Has Evelyn always treated you like this?"
"Today was the first time. Before, she just said some annoying things, like how I didn't have a boyfriend," Elara didn't know how to describe Evelyn. "I don't know what she was thinking, saying those things today."
The Evelyn Elara knew was annoying and changed boyfriends quickly. It was the first time she had seen Evelyn directly say she wanted to steal someone's boyfriend.
But compared to those who pretend to be pure, Elara still found Evelyn, who was openly annoying, to be better. At least she didn't have to worry about being secretly plotted against.
"Jesse," Elara spoke, wanting to ask him some questions.
Jesse was driving seriously. "What's up?"
"If Evelyn seduced someone else's boyfriend and succeeded, what do you think that girl should do?" Elara probed, giving him a misleading option. "Should she go and argue with Evelyn?"
"No need," Jesse blurted out.
Elara was a bit surprised and asked, "Why?"
"A boyfriend who can be seduced by someone else isn't worth her effort," Jesse's perspective was straightforward. "Even without Evelyn, this guy wouldn't necessarily be faithful after marriage."
"Then what do you think she should do?" Elara asked.
"Stay away from trash," Jesse said. "Start a new life."
Elara smiled. Jesse was really cute.
Just as she was thinking this, her phone vibrated with a message. She took it out and saw it was from Evelyn.
Evelyn: [I have those videos of you from back then.]
Elara: [So?]
Evelyn continued: [Do you think I should show them to your boyfriend?]
Elara stayed calm and replied: [Go ahead. If you do, I'll go to the police and report you for distributing distributing obscene videos. They'll arrest you.]
This was an answer Evelyn hadn't expected. Evelyn, sitting on the couch, smiled and typed back: [Are you afraid your boyfriend will find out?]
Elara glanced at Jesse. It wasn't that she was afraid; she just didn't want him to worry unnecessarily.
Evelyn kept messaging: [I'll find a time to meet your boyfriend and show him in person.]
Elara's reply was simple: [That would be great. I'm worried he lacks experience. When you show him, make sure to explain it to him. He might not understand.]
Most people wouldn't have said something like that. Evelyn, taken aback by Elara's unexpected response, adjusted her tone.
Evelyn: [I was kidding. I don't have any videos.]
Evelyn wasn't a pervert; she had no reason to keep those videos.
Elara had guessed: [I know.]
Evelyn looked at the drunk Aria and Stella beside her and, after some consideration, sent Elara a message: [You should talk to Jesse about it sometime, preferably before marriage.]
Even though Jesse seemed to like Elara a lot, some things were unpredictable. Elara was quite interesting, and Evelyn didn't want to lose this sparring partner just yet.
Elara paused and then sent a message unrelated to the topic: [Drink less, and don't waste your life on those so-called boyfriends. Your value isn't defined by them.]
Her simple sentence made Evelyn feel stifled, almost breaking her composure.
Evelyn lowered the volume and called Elara. As soon as Elara answered, she uttered, "You really are as unlikable as ever."
"Likewise," Elara replied calmly. "I don't like you either."
Evelyn uttered, "Elara."
Elara asked, "What?"
Evelyn continued, "You're really annoying."
Elara responded, "Right back at you."
"But you know what, I find you somehow tolerable." Evelyn changed the topic, perhaps because of the alcohol or because Elara's words about value hit her deeply. She suddenly became sentimental. "Can you come keep me company for a while?"
Elara refused without hesitation, "No."
"Just for a while," Evelyn's voice became hoarse, and her nose felt a bit sour.
Elara paused, sensing something was wrong with Evelyn. "What's wrong with you?"
"Too drunk to leave," Evelyn didn't reveal the real reason, speaking in a muffled voice. "There are only three of us drunk in the private room now. If you don't come, we might be taken away by someone else."
Elara really didn't want to get involved. After all, there was no so-called friendship between her and Evelyn, let alone the fact that Evelyn had just tried to steal her boyfriend.
"Are you coming or not?" Evelyn asked, lacking confidence.
"You're really annoying," Elara replied, but in the end, she couldn't bear it. "Wait there."
After speaking, Elara hung up the phone and asked Jesse to turn back.
This action left Jesse puzzled. He asked, "Did you leave something there?"
"Three very annoying people," Elara complained. She didn't want to get involved, but thinking about what Evelyn had said, she still felt uneasy.
