Chapter 706 Forgive Me This Once
"Mom, don't worry. I'm doing great here," Diana said cheerfully, reflecting their close relationship. "I'll bring my boyfriend to meet you in a while."
"Have you forgotten that all your promises have failed?" Benjamin took the phone and said lazily.
Diana retorted, "Mr. Reynolds, if you can't say anything nice, then shut up."
"I'm just giving a friendly reminder," Benjamin replied.
"Give the phone to Mom," Diana said, not wanting to talk to Benjamin anymore. "I want to speak with her."
"Mom and I have things to do, she doesn't have time for you," Benjamin said. "Goodbye."
Just as Diana was about to say something, she heard the busy tone on the other end.
Diana found Benjamin's chat window and sent him a message: [Are you being childish? Just because I stayed with Mom for two nights and made you sleep in the guest room?]
Benjamin still held a grudge.
At that moment, Benjamin hadn't seen the message; he was still holding Daphne's phone.
Seeing Daphne trying to take the phone to call Diana back, Benjamin refused to let go. "Diana is grown up. You need to give her space and let her feel free."
"Give it to me," Daphne demanded.
"Are you mad?" Benjamin leaned in to hug her.
Daphne avoided him, stood up from the couch, and looked at him with clear disapproval. "You shouldn't have hung up on Diana. She's been trying to win someone over for almost two months and hasn't succeeded. She must be feeling down."
"She's not," Benjamin said, confident in his understanding of Diana.
"You're not her, how do you know that?" Daphne just wanted to give Diana some warmth. "Give me the phone."
Seeing Daphne's genuine concern, Benjamin handed her the phone and even helped dial Diana's number.
While waiting for Diana to pick up, Benjamin said, "Diana is a very optimistic person. If she were really upset, she would have come to you already."
Because of their family upbringing, both Diana and Louis saw home as a safe haven.
Whenever they were unhappy, they would be honest about it.
Daphne wanted to respond to Benjamin, but the call had already connected.
As it turned out, Benjamin was right. Diana didn't have any negative emotions and was as energetic as ever.
After a five-minute conversation, Daphne finished talking to Diana.
Benjamin hugged Daphne, showing the same patience as always. "I know you're worried about her getting hurt, but you've seen Diana grow up. You know how resilient she is."
Daphne didn't respond and stood up.
Benjamin asked, "Still worried?"
"No," Daphne said, recalling the earlier incident and feeling a bit displeased. "I just remembered I have plans with Emma tonight. I'm going to see her."
Benjamin immediately grabbed Daphne's arm and pulled her close. "Are you mad because I took your phone earlier?"
"No."
"I apologize."
"Not necessary."
"For the sake of the kids, can you give me a break?" Benjamin continued to coax her, his handsome face unchanged from before. "Forgive me this once."
"Don't do what you did today again," Daphne finally relented.
Benjamin agreed readily, "Okay."
Daphne nodded.
Benjamin squeezed her hand. "Not mad anymore?"
"No," Daphne said, her anger dissipating as quickly as it had come.
"I didn't do it on purpose," Benjamin said, opening Diana's message. "Last time she came, she deliberately tried to take you away from me. As her father, I had to show some attitude."
As Benjamin spoke, Daphne saw the message Diana had sent him.
Benjamin simply handed the phone to Daphne, bringing up the past. "Last time, you said I wronged her."
"She's just a kid," Daphne said, touching her nose, aware of the "battle" between father and daughter. "You're her dad; you should let her have her way."
"I can let her have her way with everything else, but not with you. Do you still blame me now?"
"No." Daphne knew she was in the wrong and shook her head.
Thinking about what happened last time when Diana visited, she felt a bit sorry for Benjamin.
Daphne hadn't expected Diana to play pranks.
"The kids are grown up now. You don't need to worry about them all the time," Benjamin said, not as meticulous as Daphne in raising the kids. "You've taught them well, they can handle things on their own."
Daphne agreed verbally but couldn't help worrying in her heart.
Daphne wanted to protect Diana and Louis forever, to ensure they were always happy and never faced any hardships.
Compared to Daphne's meticulous care and concern, Benjamin had always allowed them to grow freely.
Even now, Benjamin wasn't as worried as Daphne.
Benjamin's approach was simple and direct. If Louis and Diana faced setbacks, as parents, they would provide care and comfort, leaving the rest to the kids.
Only by experiencing challenges and setbacks could one become stronger.
Life couldn't always be smooth.
"As long as we're still around and they're young, even if they get hurt or face difficulties, we can guide them and offer comfort and encouragement," Benjamin continued, patient and gentle. "But if they only face setbacks after we're gone, what will they do then?"
Daphne wanted to say something but realized Benjamin was right.
However, as a mother, she couldn't help but worry about her children.
"Don't worry. If Diana is really unhappy, she'll tell Louis first," Benjamin said, rubbing her head, his expression soothing. "She'll also tell you."
"Okay." Daphne nodded.
At that moment, Diana had no idea that Daphne was constantly thinking about her.
Shortly after finishing her call with Daphne, Diana received a message from Louis. It contained no details, just one sentence: [Come back.]
Diana called Louis, confused by his message. "What do you mean?"
"Caspian isn't right for you," Louis said, unusually firm and serious. "I've booked you a flight back to Gedser for tomorrow."
Diana took a sip of water. "Stop joking."
Diana hadn't even talked things through with Caspian yet; how could she go back?
"I'm not joking," Louis said sternly, clearly upset. "If you don't come back, I'll give the information I've found to Mom and Dad tomorrow and have them come to Ivrea City to get you."
Hearing this, Diana paused, realizing the seriousness of the situation. Louis wouldn't do something like this unless it was really important.
