Chapter 201 What’s Going On?

Summer felt the sting of a resounding slap. Everyone realized that the tales Summer had been spreading were fabrications, filling her with shameful indignation. She genuinely wanted to ruin Daphne.

"Marcus did ask me to look after you and ensure you find someone to marry," Summer finally burst out in anger, unable to contain her fury. "After all, it's not that easy for someone who's been married before to get hitched again."

At these words, every glance swung to Daphne.

No one had anticipated that Lydia's sister, who had always been out of sight, had not only had a secret wedding but had also divorced.

"Miss Wen is joking, of course." A gentle voice suddenly emerged, with the scholarly Evan approaching, a smile playing on his lips, "For Daphne, no matter how many times she's been married, there are countless who would wish to wed her."

"What are you doing here?" This time Daphne was genuinely perplexed.

Summer's presence was one thing, given her penchant for mingling in social circles, and Aubrey's attendance was explainable since the event was meant for singles looking for a connection. But Evan wasn't the kind of guy who attended these functions.

Despite his family pressuring him to marry, he never showed any interest.

"I heard you would be here, so I made a point to get an invitation," Evan said, adjusting his glasses, his demeanor exuding warmth toward Daphne.

Everyone else was taken aback.

"Mr. Winston?"

"This singles' event is quite lively, isn't it?"

"Mr. Winston seems quite familiar with Miss Murphy. Are they on good terms privately?"

"To go as far as to get an invite because he heard you were attending—what do you think about that!"

Now nobody was composed.

Even though these people came from distinguished backgrounds, they paled in comparison to Evan's. Plus, Evan was something of a legend; many desired to marry him, but since he never expressed any intent to do so, they eventually gave up.

Suddenly, Daphne felt a lot more at ease. With Evan there, she didn't have to deal with the situation alone.

Just as she had suspected, after Evan appeared, he took her to a lounge area at a leisure venue to relax. Other people who wanted to get to know and connect with her were firmly turned away by Evan. The scene was a sharp sting to Summer's eyes.

Why did Daphne get so much attention, and why did even Mr. Winston favor her? And the other guests who had initially been playing with her, why did they suddenly only want to greet Daphne, leaving her completely out in the cold?

Envy consumed her entirely. Now all she could think about was how Daphne's arrival had taken away everything that was hers; her job, her father, her connections. Daphne was unaware of her thoughts and had no idea about her extreme leanings.

If Summer were just an ordinary girl who didn't use underhanded tactics, Daphne might have even helped her. But from their very first encounter, Daphne did not like her.

"Charles is here too," Evan suddenly blurted out, throwing Daphne into confusion. It wasn't that she was unsettled; she just couldn't understand.

"He was dragged here by Edwin," Evan explained, "They should be arriving soon."

Meanwhile, outside, Charles sat in Edwin's car, looking at the person in the driver's seat, and coldly declared, "I'll wait for you in the car; let me know when you're done with the mixer."

"You have to come with me," Edwin insisted, tugging at him.

"No," Charles held firm.

If he went and got photographed and the pictures ended up online, what if Daphne got the wrong idea?

"How can I prove that I didn't do anything after I went in unless you're with me?" Edwin continued to insist, clearly determined to have Charles accompany him, "For the sake of my reputation, you must stay with me the whole time."

"Why come if you don't want to? Couldn't you have just refused?" Charles couldn't understand him.

"Not everyone has the freedom in their marriage like you," Edwin let go of Charles's hand, sitting back in his seat with a hint of defeat, "Mom and Dad do not support my relationship with Susie. If I don’t show up here, it would cause trouble for her."

He couldn't be by Susie's side all the time and was quite aware of his parents' schemes. He had to appear to compromise occasionally on the surface. Only when he had full control over the Smith Group would he have the leverage to negotiate.

By then, whether they agreed with him or not, it wouldn't matter anymore. But for now, to ensure Susie's safety, he had to make compromises he didn't want to.

With a slight frown, Charles, although extremely reluctant, still ended up accompanying Edwin inside. His appearance instantly caught the attention of the socialites' daughters.

If Daphne and Lydia were the most sought-after heiresses for the sons of the wealthy elite, Charles was the ultimate catch for the daughters of high society. After all, no one could surpass Charles when it came to looks and family background. Even Evan paled in comparison.

"What kind of day is this?! The elusive heiress of the Murphy Group has shown up, Mr. Winston from Winston Corp is here, and now even Mr. Lancelot from the Lancelot Group has arrived!"

"Isn't this just a regular mixer for singles? Why does it feel like a gathering of industry titans?"

"The most puzzling part is, what are Mr. Lancelot and Mr. Winston doing here?"

"Who knows?"

Everyone chattered, each person adding their bit. They all wanted to approach Charles and strike up a conversation, but the aura around Charles was so intimidating that they all held back.

Charles overheard their conversation, and he walked right up to the person who had just spoken. That person's breath hitched, too nervous to utter another word.

‘Mr. Lancelot is standing so close!’

"You just mentioned the heiress of the Murphy Group," Charles's gaze darkened slightly, his lips parting to ask the burning question, "Her name wouldn't happen to be Daphne, would it?"

"Yes... yes, that's right," the socialite nodded frantically, confirming it was Daphne.

Charles muttered a thank you and walked towards her with his friend Edwin by his side.

Observing the situation, Marshall Tang guessed a possibility, "Your ex-wife, she's Daphne?"

Charles remained silent.

"No wonder you asked me earlier if Lydia had a sister," Edwin chimed in, then gazed at him perplexed, "So you married her without even understanding her family background?"

Charles gave him a look that clearly expressed how bothersome he found the conversation.

"You're quite something," Edwin's comment could have been taken as either praise or sarcasm, "If I were a member of Daphne's family, I'd have given you a good thrashing for whisking her away so carelessly."

"One more word, and I'm out of here," Charles retorted, not wanting to listen anymore.

He had asked Daphne about her family before, and after they had gotten married, he had suggested visiting her parents, but she had refused every time. She had said that she married him and didn't want to involve anyone else.
