Chapter 321 Acting Skills Comparable to an Oscar Winner
Daphne could get Charles back to Marcus and Laura faster if he was healthy.
Thinking this, she felt a bit more at ease.
"When Mark told me about the past, I felt different," Charles said, relieved she didn't dislike him. "That's why I lied about the cufflinks."
"You lied to find Brian?" Daphne frowned, confused.
She was supposed to take him to see Brian today. Why sneak off?
"Yeah." Charles nodded, testing her patience and blaming Brian. "Brian said if I felt off, I should see him."
Daphne frowned again. Why didn't Brian tell her?
"Daphne," Charles couldn't read her emotions. "Are you mad?"
"No." She planned to talk to Brian but needed to confirm something first. "Why didn't you wait for me today?"
"I was scared," Charles admitted, sounding pitiful.
"Scared of what?" Daphne asked, puzzled.
"I don't know how much I've recovered," Charles said half-truthfully. "If I fully recover, you might not want me. I don't want that."
Daphne felt a mix of emotions. Benjamin was right; Charles was too dependent on her.
"In the future, tell me these things right away," Daphne instructed. "Got it?"
"Yes!" Charles nodded, then asked, "Do you blame me for what I said?"
"No," Daphne replied, still thinking about his recovery.
"Thank you, Daphne," Charles said.
He rushed to hug her. Daphne stiffened, feeling conflicted.
She pulled away. Before she could speak, Charles asked pitifully, "Do you hate me?"
"No," Daphne said calmly. "Men and women should keep a proper distance; you can't just hug anyone."
"But you're my sister," Charles said innocently. "Even though Mark said we were married, I don't remember. I only know you're my sister."
Daphne wanted to say more, but Charles looked down. "Or do you care about our past and hate me?"
"I can be your sister and care for you like a brother," Daphne clarified. "But no hugging or holding hands, okay?"
Charles nodded. "Okay."
"I'll take you to see Brian again tomorrow," Daphne said.
"Why?" Charles asked.
"To see if your recovery is tied to the past," Daphne explained. "If it is, I'll help you recover faster."
Seeing she was serious, Charles agreed. "Okay."
After their talk, Charles felt much better.
Now that his lie was out, Benjamin couldn't cause trouble.
"Daphne," Charles thought of something, his eyes flickering. "Do you know why I wasn't mad after I recovered a bit? I lied to you."
"If you kept lying, I'd be mad, but you told me in time," Daphne said. "Plus, mental recovery is good. From today, I guessed a bit about your state."
"You knew I had recovered?" Charles asked.
"No, but I thought it might have improved," Daphne replied.
"You're as smart as Benjamin next door," Charles said. "When he took me over yesterday, he said I had recovered. I didn't expect you to guess it, too."
Did Benjamin know?
"What do you mean by that?" Daphne asked.
Charles explained what had happened.
After explaining, Charles added, "Benjamin said I had recovered. I wanted to admit it, but I thought if Benjamin knew before you, you'd be mad, so I kept pretending."
"Okay," Daphne nodded. "It's in the past now, let's move on."
No wonder Benjamin kept reminding her to pay attention to details.
Charles had been pretending so well that Benjamin hadn't told her directly.
Charles's eyes flickered. Didn't Daphne blame Benjamin for hiding things?
"You just recovered from a fever; rest a bit more," Daphne instructed. "I'll talk to Brian about tomorrow's meeting."
"Okay," Charles agreed obediently.
After Daphne went to the study, Charles messaged Brian: [I told Daphne about my mental recovery, but I said it was around seventeen years old. She's taking me to see you tomorrow, don't slip up.]
Brian: [Didn't you say you wouldn't tell?]
Charles: [Lying is bad; she doesn't like me lying to her.]
Brian thought, "As if saying you're seventeen isn't a lie."
Brian was about to reply when he saw another message from Charles: [You can also choose not to meet her. She'll contact you soon; think of an excuse.]
The best outcome would be if Daphne didn't take him to see Brian. If they went, she might discover something unusual.
After replying that he understood, Brian sighed at the medical base.
Knowing Daphne, she would ask many questions after learning about Charles's partial recovery and why he didn't tell her.
According to their agreement, he was supposed to inform her of Charles's condition at any time.
But Brian didn't want to lie to Daphne again. He had already lied once. If he lied again, it would be hard to ask for her help in the future.
Thinking this, he decided to turn off his phone and bought a ticket to fly abroad. He needed to go to the overseas medical base to further investigate Charles's issue, so it wasn't exactly avoiding the situation.
Brian left the base with just a few things.
Daphne knew nothing about this. In the study, she didn't immediately contact Brian; she was thinking about Charles.
From yesterday to today, she noticed a crucial issue: Charles's acting skills were Oscar-worthy.
Even she hadn't noticed anything off about his behavior, words, or expressions.
