Chapter 317 Can the Girl You’re Pursuing Beat You Up?
Daphne glanced at Charles, feeling a bit down.
Charles was acting paranoid lately. If not handled right, it could get worse.
If his memory came back soon, things would be fine. The old Charles wasn't like this.
But right now, Charles had no memory. They just had to wait.
"Daphne," Charles said, holding her hand, looking sad and guilty. "Do you think I'm a bad kid?"
Initially, Daphne considered agreeing. However, she then began to feel partially responsible for her treatment of him.
He was just a kid with amnesia and a regressed mind. He needed more attention.
"As long as you know your mistakes and fix them and don't act like this anymore, you won't be a bad kid," Daphne said slowly. "But if you keep it up, then you are."
Charles asked, "Will you still want me?"
Daphne replied, "Yes."
Charles continued, "Will you drive me away?"
Daphne said, "No."
Hearing this, Charles felt a bit better.
He sat up, hugged Daphne's arm, and acted like a child. "Daphne, I'll listen to you from now on and won't lie or deceive anymore."
"Okay." Daphne looked at the removed medical equipment and helped him with it.
After fixing it, she told him to lie down and apologize to Benjamin once he felt better.
Charles agreed. His reactions seemed so natural that Daphne didn't suspect anything, thinking it was just a personality issue caused by a lack of love.
When Benjamin saw her come out, he stood up and asked, "How is he?"
"It seems like a personality issue from my neglect these past few days," Daphne explained. "He admitted his mistake and will apologize to you once he feels better."
"Is that all?" Benjamin was a bit surprised, thinking, 'Is Charles that good at acting?'
Daphne nodded.
Knowing they wouldn't see Brian today, Benjamin didn't stay. He told Daphne he'd make lunch and then left.
Back in the next room, Benjamin made a call.
Desmond Scott, on the other end, was thrilled to get the call, his tone rising. "Mr. Reynolds! You finally contacted me! Are you coming back to take over the family business?"
After waiting so long, it was finally happening!
"No," Benjamin said slowly.
Desmond was a bit frustrated. "No?"
"Help me look into Charles from the Lancelot Group, especially his personality," Benjamin said casually, sitting on the sofa. "And check what Brian's been researching lately."
Daphne and Kevin could find some of this. But some things were more accurate when learned directly from people rather than from a computer.
After all, the internet was just a collection of dead data.
"What are you looking for?" Desmond was curious.
"Testing your ability," Benjamin lied smoothly. "To see if you can handle the job of a secretary."
Hearing this, Desmond got excited. He asked with a mix of probing and joy, "Really?"
"Yep," Benjamin replied with a hint of mystery.
"I'll get you the info in seven days," Desmond said, full of energy.
Benjamin acknowledged, and just as he was about to hang up, Desmond asked, "Mr. Reynolds?"
"What's up?" Benjamin replied.
"I heard from Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds that you're not coming back because you're chasing a girl? Is that true?" Desmond asked, curious.
Desmond had never seen Benjamin with a girl, so he was skeptical.
"Want to know?" Benjamin's tone lifted slightly.
Desmond nodded eagerly. "Yes!"
He was dying to know. What kind of girl could make Benjamin chase her? Was she beautiful or a tough fighter?
Desmond remembered when a girl pestered Benjamin in their youth, and Benjamin asked her, "Can you protect me?"
Desmond thought it was shameless for a boy to ask a girl that. He even wanted to distance himself from Benjamin, letting all the girls know he didn't know this guy.
The girl had replied, "Isn't it the boy's job to protect the girl?"
Benjamin had said, "I'm different. I only like people who can beat me and protect me."
Desmond still cringed at Benjamin's casual tone. So embarrassing!
"When you finish the tasks I gave you, I'll tell you," Benjamin teased.
As expected, Benjamin was still hard to get info from.
"Can the girl you're chasing beat you up?" Desmond asked, "Is she super strong, 6.5 feet tall, and can throw you over her shoulder?"
What kind of question was that?
"Really?" Desmond thought Benjamin had agreed, imagining the scene. "Mr. Reynolds! Your taste is unique."
The two of them together would be quite a sight.
Benjamin would look tiny next to his burly wife.
He wondered what Benjamin's parents, Henry Reynolds and Anouk Green, would think.
"Do your job well," Benjamin said, "Don't overthink it. If you don't complete these tasks, you'll fail the assessment."
Desmond was confident. "No problem!"
After hanging up, Desmond immediately told Henry and Anouk about Benjamin's criteria for a partner.
Henry and Anouk took about half an hour to accept this.
At nine o'clock, Benjamin got a video call from Henry and Anouk.
After a brief greeting, Henry and Anouk exchanged glances, and finally, Henry spoke, "Benjamin, I have a question."
"Go ahead," Benjamin said, thinking they were asking if he'd come back for the New Year.
"Desmond told us you're chasing a girl?" Henry asked directly.
Henry didn't know about this. When Benjamin sent him this news last time, Henry had already deleted it. Anouk, who knew, didn't tell him either.
