Chapter 233 Going to See Luke
After all, Sophia had always treated them sincerely before.
Daphne observed the situation and refrained from intervening much. She simply mentioned to Alexander, "Lydia and I will head back first. Take your time to talk.."
"Okay." Alexander didn't refuse.
This matter indeed needed a good discussion.
He might have been misunderstood, but someone as kind as Daphne should not be misinterpreted.
After Daphne and Lydia got into the car and drove off, Lydia began questioning, "What was your conversation about? Why did Mrs. Hayes react so strongly?"
Daphne didn't hide anything and briefly explained her conversation with Sophia.
Five minutes later.
Lydia understood the whole story.
"So, she was just putting on an act in front of Dad earlier?" Lydia was taken aback by this unexpected disclosure, not anticipating Sophia's true nature. "But why? This isn't like her at all."
"Self-interest reveals the true nature of people," Daphne reasoned. "My words likely shattered all her illusions."
"But she shouldn't have wronged you," Lydia said angrily.
Lydia used to trust her quite a bit.
Without Daphne's intervention, she would have been easily deceived by them and potentially felt sympathetic towards Summer, possibly even granting her a portion of the stocks.
Seeing Lydia's puffed-up face, Daphne poked her cheek. "What are you thinking?"
"I just feel so stupid for not seeing their true colors." Lydia confided in Daphne. "If you hadn't come back, I would have thought they were good people."
Daphne patted her head. "They disguised themselves very well in front of you. It's normal that you didn't notice."
It was just by chance that she ran into Summer at the company.
Combining that with the recent events, she had pieced it together.
Lydia was inexperienced and pure-hearted, unwilling to think badly of people.
"I'm still very angry!" Lydia pouted.
Daphne affectionately ruffled her hair, telling her to relax.
Upon returning home, Lydia went to call her boyfriend, retreating to her room for privacy.
Witnessing her happiness in love, Daphne refrained from interrupting. At her age, she deserved to experience a genuine romance.
In no time, evening had arrived.
During dinner, Alexander called to say he wouldn't be coming home tonight and told Daphne and Lydia to rest early.
After saying okay, Daphne hung up and had dinner with Lydia.
Throughout the meal, Lydia hesitated multiple times, casting glances at Daphne as if contemplating the opportune moment to speak.
Daphne took notice and encouraged her, saying, "Go ahead, what have you been wanting to tell me all day?"
"How did you know?!" Lydia was shocked.
"You looked at me several times this morning while we were having breakfast and watching TV," Daphne said, knowing her well, "What's up?"
"It's nothing, really, just..."
Lydia stammered, her cheeks turning a bit red.
Seeing this, Daphne made a bold guess. "Is it about your boyfriend?"
Lydia immediately looked up, her eyes filled with disbelief.
Daphne could even guess that?
"It's about him." she admitted, no longer hesitating. "He said he wants to meet you."
Daphne was puzzled. Why did he want to meet her?
"He's too scared to meet Dad right now." Lydia didn't hide anything. "He said he wants to meet you first, and after he graduates, he'll meet Dad."
"When?"
"You agreed?!"
"Yes."
"I love you!"
As long as Daphne had no objections, Alexander would almost certainly be okay with it.
She was so smart.
"Wait, if it's on the 6th of this month, I might not be available." Daphne clarified. "I have to go out for something."
"It's not that day," Lydia said happily. "It's the 7th of this month."
Daphne paused her eating.
The 7th of this month?
Wasn't that the day Benjamin told Evan to come back?
Seeing her reaction, Lydia asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." Daphne didn't want to disappoint or upset her. "Just let me know the location once you decide."
She planned to inform Evan on the evening of the 6th that she needed to go on a business trip. Following a meeting with Lydia and her boyfriend on the 7th, she would head directly to the airport.
Gedser was a big place.
She probably wouldn't run into Benjamin.
Having thought it through, Daphne felt at ease.
The next day at noon, Alexander returned. Daphne didn't ask about Sophia, and Alexander didn't bring it up either. They continued their days as usual.
In the blink of an eye, it was the 6th of the month.
Daphne got up early, bringing along some documents and a gift for Luke.
This time, she didn't have the driver take her but drove herself.
She provided Luke with her license plate number before heading to the government residential area and navigating the familiar path to the Smith residence.
Because Luke had informed them in advance, the guards let Daphne through without issue.
When she arrived, it was just past 9 AM.
Luke greeted her warmly with a big smile. "You finally came. It's been a long time since you visited me."
"Sorry, that's my fault." Daphne handed over the gift. "I brought this to make it up to you."
"Your presence is the best gift; there was no need to bring anything!" Luke feigned annoyance before promptly inviting her in. "Join me for a few rounds of chess. I'm tired of facing off against those elderly gentlemen every day.."
Daphne agreed. "Sure."
Soon, someone brought over the chessboard and pieces for Luke.
Normally, Luke hated it when people talked during chess, finding it distracting.
Even when engaging with the other elderly men in the government residential area, he would not hold back from exchanging curses with them if they were talkative.
However, today, he broke his own rule.
After playing for a while, Luke, thinking about today's matter, casually asked, "Daphne."
"What's up?" Daphne was focused on the chessboard.
"Do you have someone you like?" Luke watched Daphne's expression.
Daphne took it as a routine concern from an elder. "No."
"How about I introduce you to a boyfriend?" Luke thought of Benjamin, who was visiting other old men, and got excited.
Daphne paused her move.
Luke pressed on. "I promise to introduce you to a reliable man."
"I was previously married and recently went through a divorce," Daphne reassured him, not wanting him to be overly concerned. "I have no intentions of entering into a new relationship anytime soon."
Luke was shocked.
He stopped playing, his wrinkled face scrunching up. "When did this happen?"
