Chapter 389 Resignation or Termination

Matt glanced at Charles, his lips tight, feeling torn.

Without his phone, Charles kept downing drinks.

After a few more, he was out of it, lost in memories of his early days with Daphne.

He thought, 'We were so happy, and I ruined it.'

Matt tried to help him to his room, but Charles grabbed his arm. "Give me my phone."

"I don't have it," Matt said.

"Then call Daphne for me," Charles insisted.

"I don't have her number," Matt replied.

"I remember it. I'll tell you."

"She's asleep. Do you really want to wake her?" Matt asked.

Charles's eyes dimmed. He stood there for a moment, then muttered, "No."

Matt couldn't describe his feelings. Charles had always had it easy, excelling in everything. But now, he looked like a kid who'd messed up.

Charles shrugged off Matt's hand, stumbled to his room, and collapsed on the bed.

That night, he dreamed of Daphne.

He dreamed everything was back to the start, that he ignored Kayla's call, telling her he was married and to leave him alone.

He also dreamed of having a lovely child with Daphne, the three of them happy together.

But it all vanished when he woke up.

Charles stared at the ceiling, pain spreading from his heart, drowning in regret.

In the following days, Charles stayed home while Mark investigated Benjamin.

Meanwhile, Daphne was living her life, working at HorizonTech Group with Benjamin.

At lunch, Jesse saw them eating together, looking puzzled. "Ms. Murphy."

"What's up?" Daphne asked.

"You two..." Jesse felt like he'd missed something big.

Daphne blinked. She'd promised Jesse that if she ever remarried, he'd help vet the guy.

"We're together," Daphne said, glancing at Benjamin. "We're in a relationship now."

Jesse eyed Benjamin. He'd suspected Benjamin had an agenda for joining HorizonTech, and now he was sure.

"So, are you firing him, or is he resigning?" Jesse asked coolly.

Daphne and Benjamin were both confused.

Daphne thought, 'HorizonTech doesn't ban office romances, so why would anyone need to be fired or resign?'

Seeing her confusion, Jesse asked, "Did you forget the notice I sent to all departments?"

Daphne really didn't remember. "What notice?"

"The boss forbids office romances. If it happens, the boss's partner gets fired," Jesse said seriously. "You asked me to do it once the company was stable and people started pursuing you."

Daphne was beautiful and capable, and many in the company liked her, some even openly pursuing her.

Daphne wasn't comfortable with the attention, so she had Jesse issue the notice.

After that, people got the message and stopped pursuing her. No one wanted to risk their job, and no one was confident enough to bet on forever.

Daphne paused, awkwardly glancing at Benjamin. "Can I say I forgot?"

"I remembered for you," Jesse said earnestly.

Benjamin raised an eyebrow, surprised.

Daphne thought carefully and then said, "Benjamin, how about you resign and go back to your family business?"

"You're kicking me out?" Benjamin's tone was lazy.

"I'm the boss; I have to set an example," Daphne said seriously.

Benjamin flicked her forehead. "Setting an example means sacrificing me?"

Daphne pressed her lips together, unsure how to respond.

"Do I have to resign?" Benjamin asked Jesse, knowing Daphne had forgotten about the rule.

"If you can keep your hands off Ms. Murphy at work, I can keep it a secret for now," Jesse said coolly. "You don't have to resign."

Benjamin thought for a moment and agreed.

That afternoon, when Jesse reported the week's schedule to Daphne, he hesitated before asking, "Ms. Murphy, can I ask you something?"

"Go ahead," Daphne said.

"Did you pursue Benjamin, or did he pursue you?" Jesse asked curiously.

"He pursued me," Daphne replied honestly. She wouldn't dare pursue Benjamin; he might make her do weighted runs and frog jumps.

"What's wrong?" Daphne noticed Jesse seemed troubled.

"Is he good to you?" Jesse's cool tone had a hint of concern.

Daphne smiled slightly. "Yes."

Before they got together, she hadn't expected Benjamin to be so gentle, considerate, and charming.

Seeing she wasn't lying, Jesse felt a bit relieved but still wanted to make sure Benjamin truly loved Daphne. He went to find Benjamin.

Daphne had been hurt before; it couldn't happen again.

When Benjamin saw Jesse, he wasn't surprised. He knew how much Jesse cared for Daphne.

"Can we talk?" Jesse's face was cool.

Benjamin nodded.

Jesse closed the door and got straight to the point. "What do you like about Ms. Murphy?"

"Everything," Benjamin replied.

"Is it because of money?" Jesse asked.

"No," Benjamin shook his head.

"If your ex shows up, will you choose Ms. Murphy or your ex?" Jesse asked the most concerning question.

"I don't have an ex," Benjamin said, his lips curving slightly. "But no matter what, I'll always stand by her."

Jesse's questioning didn't bother Benjamin. In fact, he was grateful Daphne had someone so attentive and caring.

"One last question," Jesse said, feeling more at ease.

"Go ahead," Benjamin said.

"If someone else pursues Ms. Murphy, what will you do?" Jesse asked directly, his cool gaze fixed on Benjamin.
