Chapter 549 Moving
Harry: [Let me talk to him.]
Elara: [He's driving.]
Harry knew chatting while driving was a bad idea, so he switched gears. [You had someone lug all those suitcases for you. Moving out?]
Elara: [Yep.]
Harry: [Where to? Give me the address, and I'll have someone check if the neighborhood's safe.]
Elara looked a bit uneasy.
After thinking it over, she replied seriously, [No need, it's safe. Just focus on enjoying time with my mom. I'm 28, I can handle myself.]
After sending that, Elara shot a message to Zara, asking her to keep Harry in check and not mess up her plans.
With that done, she finally relaxed. "Jesse."
"What's up?" Jesse asked.
"Is this car yours?" Elara asked.
If it was, Harry could easily track it down, and she'd have to come up with a new plan.
"No, it's the company's," Jesse said calmly, giving off a reassuring vibe. "Why do you ask?"
"Just curious," Elara felt a wave of relief.
Jesse glanced at her, a flicker of something in his eyes, but he stayed quiet.
After midnight, they got home. Jesse hauled all of Elara's stuff upstairs. Since Elara was a girl, he gave up the master bedroom and even changed the sheets for her.
A girl should have a room with a private bathroom.
Elara noticed.
Her usually bright eyes sparkled as she asked, "Jesse, this was your room, right?"
"It's yours now," Jesse said, moving to the second bedroom.
It was a three-bedroom, two-bath apartment.
He lived there because it was close and convenient to HorizonTech Group.
"How much is the rent? I'll transfer it to you," Elara pulled out her phone, trying to blend into his life.
"No need, it's my place," Jesse thought about her earlier reaction and the suspicious car tailing them, his calm eyes turning serious. "Let's talk about the people following us."
Jesse asked, "What's your deal with them?"
Elara bit her lip, unsure how to explain.
If she told the truth, her previous lies about her job would unravel, leading to more questions.
But if she didn't, how could she explain?
"Did you piss someone off?" Jesse guessed, thinking about her earlier nervousness.
"No," Elara couldn't think of a good excuse. "It's a long and complicated story."
Jesse didn't push. "Take your time."
"Well, I'm not sure if I should tell you." Elara hesitated.
One lie needed a bunch more to cover it, and she couldn't keep track of them all.
If Jesse asked something later, she'd definitely slip up.
"It's your business. Up to you if you want to share," Jesse was understanding, his tone still calm and caring. "But if those people are trouble, you need to tell me so I can help."
"Okay," Elara agreed.
Jesse didn't press further. He stood up and put her suitcase in the master bedroom. "There's a walk-in closet inside. I'll go make dinner."
"Okay," Elara smiled.
Jesse headed to the kitchen.
Watching him busy in the kitchen, Elara's face lit up with a sweet smile.
Elara didn't hang around in the living room. She darted to the master bedroom to get her stuff sorted, hanging up her clothes in the walk-in closet and setting up her skincare and makeup.
Just as she was about to go help Jesse, to show she wasn't just freeloading, Harry called.
Elara pinched her brow, closed the door, and answered, "What now?"
"Are you moving in with the guy you're chasing?" Harry's voice was dead serious.
Elara replied, "No."
Harry wasn't buying it. "You're lying."
Elara explained, "I'm just sharing an apartment with him!"
"Same to me," Harry snapped, his tone sharp. "It's dangerous for a girl to share an apartment with a guy. Do you know how many creeps are out there?"
"I've only met good people," Elara tried to stay calm.
"You can't judge people by their looks. How do you know he's a good person?" Harry had always doted on Elara. Though he sometimes scolded her, his concern was genuine.
"I lied to him, saying I didn't want to work at my old company, and he offered me a job at his," Elara listed off. "I said I had no place to stay, and he gave up his master bedroom for me."
Harry paused.
Elara continued, "Do you think someone who'd give up his master bedroom and even change the sheets for me could be a bad person?"
"Well," Harry was stumped.
Honestly, if it were him, he wouldn't have thought of being so considerate.
"He's really nice. If you don't believe me, you can ask Daphne," Elara decided to bring up Daphne. "Daphne knows him too."
Harry asked, "Daphne from the Murphy Group?"
Elara answered, "Yes."
Harry was uncertain. "She really knows him?"
Elara stated, "Not only does she know him, but they're also good friends."
"Then send me your current address. I'll come to see you next weekend," Harry knew Daphne usually hung out with reliable people, but still, he worried.
After all, Elara was his daughter, and he didn't want anything to happen to her.
"If you come, my previous lies will be exposed," Elara thought Harry was too stubborn. "Give me a month. After a month, I'll introduce him to you."
"Live your life well. I'll keep an eye on your dad," Zara's voice came through the phone, giving Elara complete freedom. "Good luck, sweetheart."
"Thanks, Mom!" Elara immediately felt relieved.
Zara added, "Block your dad's phone and Facebook."
"Isn't that a bit much?" Elara hesitated.
"Unblock him in a month. If anything comes up, contact me," Zara continued.
"Okay!" Elara agreed.
Harry was puzzled. Just a moment ago, she said it was a bit much, and now suddenly she agreed!
"Dad, I'm sorry. If you need anything, have Mom relay it to me," Elara felt a bit more at ease. "When you were dating Mom, you probably didn't want to be disturbed either. Bye."
With that, Elara hung up the phone.
Following Zara's instructions, she unhesitatingly put Harry on the blacklist.
For happiness, she had to temporarily inconvenience Harry!
"Elara, dinner's ready," Jesse's voice came from outside.
Elara put her phone on the table to charge and went out.
Seeing the delicious food on the table, she felt her taste buds come alive.
