Chapter 579 Am I That Kind of Person?
"Do you really think I'm that kind of guy?" Brian shot back, a bit of pride sneaking into his voice. "You think just anyone gets to see me naked?"
Still not satisfied, Brian added, "I did that just for you."
Richard couldn't be bothered and just walked away, all lazy-like.
Brian chased after him.
"I really did it just for you," Brian muttered, trailing Richard down the stairs. "If you don't believe me, ask my roommates. They've never seen me without clothes."
Richard stopped in his tracks.
Brian halted too. "What's up?"
"Roommates?" Richard caught onto his words.
"Yeah," Brian said like it was no big deal, "You don't want me living with you, so every time you kick me out, I crash at hostels for like, a few dozen bucks a night, sharing a room with a bunch of people."
Richard was skeptical. No way Brian was staying in places like that.
Even if he wasn't part of the Harris Family anymore, he had enough cash to avoid those dumps.
"Next time you lie, make it believable," Richard said, not buying it.
"I'm not lying," Brian pulled a receipt from his pocket. "Look, here's the receipt from the hostel last month. I was gonna ask you to pay me back once you let me stay."
Richard looked confused.
"I got kicked out by you. Can you reimburse me?" Brian handed over the receipt.
Richard checked it out. It was legit, not some fake.
"Where's this hostel you stayed at?" Richard asked.
Brian answered honestly, no hesitation.
He'd already tipped off the hostel owner, so if Richard checked, the guy would back him up and make it sound even worse.
"I'll have Daphne check the surveillance footage," Richard said slowly, rubbing the receipt. "See if you really stayed there."
Brian started to panic. "Isn't that a bit much for something so small?"
"It's necessary," Richard insisted, seeing right through him.
"Why not just ask the hotel owner yourself?" Brian tried to dodge Daphne getting involved.
If she did, the whole thing would blow up.
"Why should I when Daphne can handle it in five minutes?" Richard asked, his casual look showing no emotion. "It's a waste of my time."
"But I always handle your stuff personally," Brian said earnestly, his tone softening.
Right now, Brian felt really wronged.
Richard frowned, stuffing the receipt back into Brian's hands. "Next time, come up with a better lie. Someone like you, who changes into three new outfits every week, needs to stay in hostels? Do you think I'm a fool?"
Brian explained seriously, "I'm love-struck."
Elara, who had just stepped out of her room, quietly retreated and closed the door. She hadn't realized Brian could be such a smooth talker.
"Then change yourself," Richard said after a brief pause, slipping back into his usual laid-back vibe as he headed downstairs.
"I'm love-struck for you," Brian followed, still full of energy. "If I change, I won't like you anymore, and I won't be all about you."
Richard shot back, "I couldn't ask for more."
"You're so heartless," Brian sighed.
"Glad you know," Richard replied, pouring himself a glass of water.
"But I'm soft-hearted," Brian kept on, "I can't stand the thought of not having you in my life or my future."
Richard was immune to this kind of talk by now.
For over five years, Brian had been saying stuff like this every day, and Richard's heart had long since turned to stone.
After taking a sip of water, Richard headed to the living room. Not seeing Elara, he called out, "Elara."
"I'm here," Elara responded.
"I'm going downstairs for a bit. If you need anything, ask Brian," Richard said lazily from her door. "He knows his way around."
"Okay," Elara replied.
Richard left shortly after.
Elara waited until she heard the door close before sneaking out of her room.
Brian smiled at Elara, relief in his eyes. "Thanks. If it weren't for you, I might not have been able to stay here even after a few more years."
"You never lived here before?" Elara asked, curious.
Brian seemed pretty smooth; he should've been able to persuade Richard.
"I did," Brian said, recalling some bad memories, "But every time, I'd get kicked out within two days, and during my stay, Richard would ignore and disdain me."
Elara grabbed a piece of fruit. "That's pretty rough."
"If you hadn't lied about a breakup, he probably wouldn't have let me stay," Brian sighed, aware of his standing with Richard.
"It wasn't a lie," Elara corrected him hesitantly after eating a piece of fruit.
Brian paused, a bit stunned. "What do you mean?"
"I was indeed being rejected," Elara admitted. It wasn't something she needed to hide.
"Could the person who rejected you be the person you once had a crush on?" Brian asked, piecing together their previous conversations.
Elara pressed her lips together and nodded.
Brian asked, "How long did you like him?"
Elara responded, "Over a decade."
Brian was shocked. "How long?"
"Over a decade," Elara repeated honestly.
Brian initially wanted to help Elara curse her crush, but remembering what she had said to Richard and that the man seemed to like her, he held back.
After some thought, Brian asked, "Do you mind telling me about it? Maybe I can help you win him over or teach him a lesson."
"No need, thank you for your kindness. I have a plan," Elara declined, thinking Willie’s idea might work. "If it doesn't work in a month, I'll come to you."
Brian coughed lightly.
Elara looked puzzled. "What's wrong?"
"You don't have to be so formal with me," Brian said after some hesitation.
Elara paused, then agreed. "Okay."
