Chapter 81 Kayla Had Been Lying to You

Mark did not linger long at the company. After delegating some important tasks to the secretarial department, he left. After all, it was Sunday, and it was impossible to work as if it were a regular weekday.

Shortly after he left, Charles sat down to handle some matters. Most white-collar workers enjoyed weekends off and national holidays, but for someone in his and Mark's position, there was hardly any distinction between workdays and holidays.

After dealing with a few documents, Charles' phone vibrated a few times. He ignored it until he finished his current task, then casually picked it up to check.

However, when he saw the content on his phone, his eyes turned sullen. It was a text message with pictures attached—several intimate photos of Kayla with another man, along with a text message.

Unknown Sender: [Charles, Kayla has been lying to you.]

The tone of the message was indiscernible, and the sender's gender was unclear. Without much hesitation, Charles dialed the number, intending to ask where the photos came from and what the message meant.

He examined the photos closely. They were not photoshopped.

As soon as he dialed, a mechanical female voice informed him that the number was invalid.

He furrowed his brows, suddenly recalling a recent trending topic.

After a moment of contemplation, he grabbed his phone and the coat draped over his chair and left the office, driving to Kayla's place.

At that moment, Kayla was still reporting to someone. Her face was filled with fear, and her voice trembled with evident terror. She tried to reason with the person, saying, "I didn't expect Charles to be so close to Rex. He'd rather believe him than me. You can't blame me for this."

"You should be aware of the consequences of ruining my plan," the voice on the phone replied.

Kayla's hand shook, and she was scared to tears. Just as she was about to explain, there was a sudden knock on the door.

The doorbell rang several times.

Her heart pounded violently as if it were about to leap out of her throat. "I have to go. Someone is at the door," Kayla said.

"You better not mess up the terminal illness issue again," the voice on the phone warned.

"Okay," Kayla replied.

She hung up the phone, deleted the call record, and wiped her tears with a tissue. After calming her breath, she stood up to open the door.

Only three people knew she lived here: one of her friends, Charles and Mark. She couldn't tell them about her situation, no matter who they were.

As the door opened, Charles' tall and imposing figure appeared outside.

As Kayla saw him, she instinctively tensed up, but to avoid suspicion, she pretended to be delighted. "Charles! What brings you here?" she greeted him.

"I need to talk to you about something," Charles said, his thin lips barely moving, holding some documents he still needed to handle.

"Come in," Kayla said, offering him a pair of house slippers she had prepared long ago but never used. "What would you like to drink? I'll get it for you."

"No need," Charles replied, his face indifferent, his narrow eyes colder than ever. "Let's talk business first."

Kayla paused. Her guilty conscience made her panic, and her eyes darted around.

Charles noticed her unease. Normally, he would have assumed she was worried about her health after a medical check-up. But ever since she lied about Daphne and Rex having an affair, he had less faith in her.

"What do you need to talk to me about?" Kayla asked, her voice lacked confidence due to her overwhelming guilt.

Charles decided to give her a chance, so he asked, "Is there anything you're hiding from me?"

Kayla instinctively gripped the water cup in front of her, her expression as innocent and bewildered as ever. "Why are you asking this all of a sudden? Did something happen?" she asked casually.

"Nothing much," Charles replied, his deep voice was calm, "I was just thinking about how Daphne has repeatedly lied to me lately. I'm worried that I'm living in a world of lies and not receiving any sincerity."

As Kayla heard this, she let out a sigh of relief. She was no longer as tense, and a gentle smile appeared on her face as she reassured him, "Don't worry. Even if the whole world deceives you, I will always be sincere with you."

"Really?" Charles asked.

"Don't you trust me?" Kayla asked nervously.

"It's not that I don't trust you," Charles said, his aloof demeanor making it hard for anyone to read his thoughts, "I just wanted to confirm."

"I would never lie to you," Kayla said, lying effortlessly, "Not in a lifetime."

Charles responded with a nod.

The living room fell silent, devoid of conversation.

Kayla was completely relaxed. She inquired with her clear eyes, "Is there anything else?"

"Once I get the divorce papers from Daphne, I'll marry you," Charles said, his tone businesslike despite the deep implications. "Before that, I want to ask, did you date anyone else during the two years we were apart?"

"What?" Kayla suddenly asked and began to panic again. She didn't understand why Charles was suddenly asking these questions. He had never asked before.

Charles rubbed his phone, and his tone was ambiguous as he said, "If you did, I'd like to thank him for taking care of you."

"No." Kayla's heart felt like it was on a roller coaster, her voice lowering, her emotions visibly sinking. She lied without batting an eyelash, "Since we broke up, I've been single. I was diagnosed with a terminal illness and didn't dare to accept anyone else's kindness."

She knew very well that Charles would feel guilty upon hearing this. As long as he felt guilty, her previous mistakes might gradually be forgiven.

Charles unlocked his phone, opened the message with the photos, and pushed the phone towards her. "Then take a look at this. Who is this?" he questioned her.

Kayla was initially puzzled, but when she took the phone and saw the photos, her face turned deathly pale. The phone in her hands fell onto the table. Her face was filled with panic and unease, her mouth opening but finding all words stuck in her throat.

Why were these photos on Charles' phone?

"What is your relationship with him?" Charles simply asked and gave her a chance to explain. As long as it was reasonable, he wouldn't blame her.

"I..." Kayla bit her lip, her mind in chaos with only one thought. She replied, "I don't know him."

Charles' eyes grew more sullen, his indifferent words suffocating. "Really?" he asked doubtfully.

"Charles, you have to believe me," Kayla's mind raced for an excuse. She couldn't afford to be doubted or fail again. She fervently insisted, "I really don't know him. These photos must have been fabricated by Daphne. She doesn't want us to be together, so she is framing me."

Kayla thought that Charles currently despised Daphne, and how she had lied to him many times in the past. As long as she pinned the blame on Daphne, he would surely believe her.

"Kayla," Charles placed the documents on the table, speaking to her formally, "You should know that I despise lying and deceit the most."
